A blessing to others

Although his schedule had been packed since his arrival on Jan. 13—taping for the series, interacting with his fans during mall shows, as well as at his grand fans’ day last Feb. 4—the singer-songwriter made time for some philanthropic activities.

Last Jan. 29, he made a surprise visit to the children sponsored by ChildFund Philippines, the local arm of ChildFund International, with which Archuleta had teamed up during his “My Kind Of Christmas” US tour. The said group encourages individuals to sponsor children who have very little to zero access to food, education, and medicine. Archuleta himself sponsors a child from his mother Lupe’s home country, Honduras.

“We had some free time in the morning and went over to meet some of the kids who’ve been sponsored in the Philippines and see how it’s affected their lives, what they’ve been able to learn, how it’s affected their family as well, and just got to talk to them. It was touching, it was really powerful to get to meet them,” he recalled.

Sponsored Children in Philippines Meet David Archuleta

Children in ChildFund Philippines’ programs and a few of their school peers received a special treat last Sunday when David Archuleta made a surprise appearance at a ChildFund gathering held at a local school.

Children from the Teatro Bu-bot [arm-in-arm] Children’s Advocacy Theater had prepared all week to mount their much-touted “Many Faces of Poverty” performance for ChildFund Philippines National Director Katherine Manik, and her unspecified guest.

Little did they know that the special guest would turn out to be none other than recording artist David Archuleta, who is in the Philippines filming a television miniseries.

Archuleta, now 21, who finished runner up in the seventh season of American Idol in 2008, teamed with ChildFund for his 2011 My Kind of Christmas tour. He is also sponsoring a child from Honduras, his mother’s native country.

Archuleta has developed a large fan base in the Philippines since his American Idol debut and through his three previous visits to Manila. Filipinos are highly anticipating the upcoming miniseries Nandito Ako, starring Archuleta and local talents.

His unannounced appearance on Sunday caught the children by surprise. Thrilled and starstruck, the children quickly recovered to deliver the program they’d prepared.

Archuleta fell silent during the troupe’s simple performance, which the children themselves conceptualized, articulating the different faces that poverty and disadvantage assumes in their community. The 10-minute skit is wordless, preferring to describe exploitation, vice and neglect through music, movement and expressive dance.

Masks partially obscure each of their faces as they depict society’s fevers, which are shed finally through the expression of children’s growing cognizance and assertion of their rights and responsibilities. The skit illustrates how children, their community and ChildFund help foster an environment conducive to the totality of each child’s life and identity.

Moved by the performance that he described as “amazing” and “powerful,” Archuleta took the floor in turn, regaling the children with an a capella rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water,” followed by an encore of Robbie Williams’ “Angels.”

Archuleta then spent time meeting the children in small groups. Though he currently sponsors a child in Honduras, Sunday’s gathering was the first time Archuleta had the opportunity to interact with children in ChildFund’s programs.

The theater troupe, sponsored children and even the school’s marching band had time to ask Archuleta questions and share stories of what sponsorship means to them.

With translation assistance by ChildFund Philippines Program Director Mark Dasco, sponsored children told Archuleta: “Please help us share the privilege of sponsorship with others, by inviting more people to sponsor [children].”

As the event came to an end, many children said they would long remember this exciting day. As he departed, Archuleta expressed his happiness at meeting the children: “Gosh, I feel so good today! Thank you so much for this experience!”

The news is bittersweet, but truly should not be surprising to any of us. Rumors have circulated for months – perhaps longer – that David was planning to go on a mission.Now we have that confirmation.

It is a hard pill to swallow for the many fans who have followed David since he first sang Heaven on American Idol. And yet, who can begrudge him what his heart tells him to do? There will be much weeping, and as I sit here writing this, the tears will not stop. But certainly it is a selfishness that brings these tears. I will miss him. As will all of his fans.

But we have grown to love him for the very qualities that send him away from us for two years – his open heart, his deep faith, his need to give, his awareness and caring for those less fortunate. What else can he do but heed the call that sings so true in his heart? For someone so young, he has a courage and maturity that surprises me so often.

TDC will be here for the duration, we will add to the archives, listen for even a snippet of news of how David is doing, and hope that two years from now we can publish a post that says, “David Archuleta on Tour” and see the young man we have all come to love so much return renewed in mind, body and spirit.

I can’t tell you how special it’s been being able to come back here and do this Christmas tour and sing these songs that just mean a lot to me and to have all of you here tonight with us.  There’s no place like home.  I always say that.  Looking back through these last few years and all the support we’ve had and all the amazing experiences we’ve had and I’ve had, I feel very blessed in my life.  While I’m home in front of you guys here tonight, I would like to make a special announcement that I’ve chosen to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  It’s not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because that I no longer want to do music anymore, but it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life.  It’s just the same feeling that I’ve always followed, tried to follow, in my life.  It’s the feeling that’s allowed me to have the opportunities I’ve had, the challenges I’ve had to overcome, and the blessings, too.  I’ve learned to trust that feeling and I’ve learned that I need to answer when it calls.  That is the reason why I know that I need to do this in my life.  I just wanted to thank you guys.  I’ll be going the first half of next year.  I just wanted announce that while I was home here in front of you guys because you have done so much for me.  Thank you so much.

I love music. Am an Archie or an Arch Angel. And am dang proud to be one!

But no more prouder than on 25 April 2011, when my artist of choice publicly showed his support for the Invisible Children’s 25 Campaign.

Held in Nashville, Tennessee, David, along with another fine young artist, Landon Pigg, took to the stage to “Break the Silence” in order to give back to all those who made the “The 25 Campaign” a rousing success.

The ’25′ campaign, which launched mid-February, asks participants to commit to raising $25 for the Invisible Children’s Protection Plan before their 25 hours of silence.

Invisible Children’s target was to get 25,000 people to donate $25 each to raise at least $625,000 for a “Protection Plan to build the (1) region’s first rehabilitation center, (2) implement an early warning security network, and 3) support our international campaign to arrest Joseph Kony, rescue his child soldiers, and bring peace after 25 years of war.”

Communicating in Unique & Relevant Ways

Music has always been an integral part of Invisible Children’s awareness efforts. According to Bridgette Bugay, public relations for Invisible Children, “the organization has participated in over 25 national music tours, been the beneficiary of music festivals such as CMJ, has official partnerships with La Blogotheque, Spin, Filter, and Windish, and continues to feature new music in their documentaries. The media-based company understands the cultural impact of music and has worked with countless artists to communicate their mission in unique and relevant ways.”

Unique and relevant, indeed. The night concluded with music in our hearts, fervor in our guts and funding for Invisible Children’s innovative campaign amounting to at least $1.8m!

The Soul Man from Utah is Back!

It was heartwarming to hear David explain how amazing he felt that he could be on the forefront of a fund raiser, not just one of the silent donors [before he became famous].

It was mind boggling to see him perform with sass, soul and “surrender”.

Once again, the enigma that is David Archuleta could not have been more pronounced last night – ramblin’ away between songs, then like a light switch, flips into this prodigious, soul-searing, other-worldly performer!

How’d he do that?

If last night’s performance – especially with his new band – is any indication, there is SOOO MUCH to look forward to, as David enters another fresh era in his career

Above all, find an Archie buddy to, at the very least, resuscitate you for the “daidly” days ahead.

David Archuleta “Breaks the Silence” with Invisible Children in Nashville, TN

Join the 100,000 global citizens April 25th and “speak out without speaking” by remaining silent for 25 hours in recognition of the 25th year of Africa’s longest running war, and the victims who have gone unheard.

According to the International Entertainment News (IEN), “Invisible Children launched an ambitious national campaign earlier this year, ’25′, which ends this Monday, April 25th. With an appearance on an episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” ’25′ is on track to raise close to $1.5 million for projects aimed at protecting people affected by a 25-year-long war in central Africa.

This nationwide movement gained the attention of Oprah Winfrey when she invited Invisible Children’s founders onto her iconic television program on April 20th. The appearance is the final segment in an episode highlighting film director Tom Shadyac. Oprah discussed the organization’s ability to activate the youth of America to “do more than just watch,” highlighting the innovative campaigning of ’25.’ “

How This All Started

Headlining groups include Rogue Wave, Peter Pisano of Peter Wolf Crier, Faces on Film, Plain White T’s, and American Idol’s David Archuleta.

A live video feed of select performances will allow participants who are not able to attend in person to connect with the thousands of others who will be simultaneously breaking the silence across the country.”

“To Speak Out without Speaking” Fits David to a T

David is a master of restraint. I find that in his music, David’s message is most resounding when his voice eases into that poignant note [think of "And I-iii-yah wanna be" of In this Moment] or slides into a most vulnerable line [remember the last line of Love Me Tender?]

And even if he is our most favorite ramblin’ man, I find it instructive to listen more to what David is NOT actually saying – e.g. VLOG about parting ways with Jive & Melinda.

Nuggets of wisdom abound from how he conducts himself. That’s why I find the strategy of this campaign so “David-like”

He joins celebrities such as actor Wesley Jonathan (Roll Bounce), Eva Pigford (America’s Next Top Model), Justin Tryon (CB Indianapolis Colts), Jimmy Allen (American Idol Season 10, Cape Henlopen Alumnus), Tevor Booker (Washington Wizards), Josh Howard (Washington Wizards) and Alesha Renee (Actress/TV Personality) to raise funds for Duffy’s HOPE, a mentoring program a mentoring program founded in 1998 by CEO Allen “Duffy” Samuels. It is an upstate non-profit organization whose foundation is to “bridge the gap” and positively impact kids’ lives by tackling sensitive issues such as bullying, obesity, etc.. In May 2010, with the support of David’s fans, we were honored to be able to give 2 students a $2500 scholarship each to further their music education dream (you can read about the recipients on our website!).  This year, with David’s blessing we will be honored and excited once again to offer Murray High School student/s the opportunity to continue to study music in higher education through The David Archuleta Music Scholarship.

We all know how much David loves and appreciates his High School.  He has done so much to give back to his community as well as worldwide.  Here is an opportunity to show David how much we appreciate HIM and do what we can to GIVE BACK as well!  What a wonderful way to honor David and to help others!!
