The release of Somos El Mundo has spawned increased interest with TheArchulator. YouTube, Twitter & other online uploads have been peppered with comments and questions about him. I have read some unflattering remarks about the video or about certain artists or some complaints about not seeing other more internationally known Hispanic celebrities. But, I have yet to encounter a negative feedback specific to David.

Comments about him are heartwarming, some hilarious and a number, surprising — like not knowing he has Hispanic roots. Depending on which version of the video you are checking out, you invariably see inquiries about the guy at 2:30 or 2:11 or 2:36 or 2:44 or 4:20 or 6:19, etc… and they all point to him!

It is the same thing with his upcoming autobiography, Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance.

Look at that picture! Ageing becomes David (although I would have loved some warmer colors in the typography). He was this chubby-cheeked doe-eyed cutie pie in AI but towards the finale, he lost so much weight but still retained the cherubic aura.

Now, his face has lost it roundness. The last two years has given way to angles and a jaw line. But even with a more purposeful pair of lips, a deeper voice and more pronounced muscularity, his eyes – yes, his hazel-brown Spanish eyes – remain clear, yielding.

But don’t get fooled with the apprehensive, compliant-like demeanor. If people think they can put a stick in between his wheels but cannot stop his motivation, then nothing will.

Case in point: his DLTSGDOM performance. We all know what he had to put up with, on the way to the finale.

Just when you think he has given his all, he comes back stronger, more admirable and more loveable than ever.

Henceforth, it was Trust The Archulator.

For David’s strength lies not in brute or force. His strength shines through his quiet dignity, soft statement of directness, respectful perseverance and quirky sense of humor.

David seems to take a page from Yajur Veda’s philosophy.

One should always aspire for increments of strength, food and long life because each of them is dependent on the other.

David has shown us how he builds on from his early wins, slowly creating ripples of triumphs that have enormous potential of sustainability. Food? Hmmm, isn’t that a dominant item already in his twits and blogs? LOL

Kidding aside, what I find most touching is his earnest desire to share his gift for any bit of possibility that his sharing could help someone, someway. This may be the spirit behind the book. Some may question the decision to come out with a book at this stage of his career or of his young life. But for me, that doesn’t necessarily reveal a weakness in the process. On the contrary, it stresses how strong the choice is. And how consistent with David’s expressed priorities.

If nothing else, David is a true-blue millennial artist – a contemporary bilingual musician who uses a wide range of media to communicate his art and his values across genre, age and cultures.

What’s more, David takes steps to engage his audience and fans in his journey. He twits, he b/vlogs, he networks, he delivers speeches (who would have thought?!), he even consults us for his haircut And now he writes.

David leverages his art to spread a little bit of good with others. It would appear that this is almost always his bottom line. Is it any wonder that his fans’ affection and respect for him develops from strength to strength?

And rightfully so. Because David, at his young age, has displayed a keen sense of the fine art of growing in grace and truth. This is quite challenging especially in the very fickle and unforgiving world of entertainment. I am confident that he will continue to do so with the passing years, as he carries on in pursuit of his infectious love for music and humanity.

Fans of former American Idol contestant David Archuleta will be scrambling to get a copy of his new calendar. The calendar is the brainchild of one of his biggest fans photographer Jennifer Barry,  who lives in  Portland Oregon, with her husband Christian, and 4 year old son Sean.

Says Barry “ My husband is amazing and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him by my side. He is my best friend.”

Crooner David Archuleta first caught Leigh’s attention when he sang John Lennon’s ballad “Imagine”. SaidBarry “After his performance, I was stunned and the first word I said was “beautiful”. I was mesmerized by his performance.” Since then she began investigating the man behind the music, and found that he is “A remarkable and inspirational person.  He is genuine and truly wants to help people.” She cites one example of this as his recent travels to Guatemala and Honduras through “Mentors International”, and recent song for Haiti relief.

The singer has many fan clubs and sites which Barry says she visits often. She has been lucky enough to meet Archuleta on eight occasions and see him in concert 9 times. The first time she saw him live was on July 11, 2008 when he performed in Portland for the American Idol Concert . He appeared along with other Idol contestants from that season.

Barry: “He, along with the other idols, came out to the buses in the afternoon before the concert to meet with fans. I was truly blown away by his willingness to chat with the fans and sign autographs. He was the last idol to leave the area.  You could tell that while all this was new, he really enjoyed talking to everyone and it was genuine and very sincere.”

She recounts that she felt “blessed” that she was able to go to the American Idol Concert in Tulsa Oklahoma, and the VIP after party when it was over. Said Barry “ I finally had an opportunity to talk to him in Tulsa. I was amazed that he recognized me from a photo. Another amazing quality of David is that he remembers his fans, and he truly listens to what you say to him. He takes a genuine interest in what his fans  say to him or want to show him.  David makes you feel important.”

Her next behind the scenes experience with Archuleta will make any fan drool with envy. Barry purchased a “VIP Meet and Greet” pass which allowed her to get her photo and chat with David. Then they were escorted to the arena where they were able to watch him perform his sound check before the concert. “The VIP experience was truly amazing, memorable and so worth it. David makes each VIP special, unique and unforgettable”, said Leigh.
Said Barry “I have never traveled to see an artist perform before. But she has traveled many times to see Archuleta saying she thinks it is because “every concert he performs is so unique”. Meeting all the other fans has also become a important part of her Archuleta experience says Barry “Seeing all the fans is just as exciting because they make this experience so much more special, fun and one of a kind.”

In 2009 she had a chance to see his “Christmas From The Heart” tour in Salt Lake City. “It is very hard to describe the feelings seeing him perform in his hometown to songs that mean a lot to him,” said Barry
“The concert was phenomenal and awe inspiring. David’s voice soared, lifted and filled the venue and he took you on a special journey into something he holds very dear to him. I felt honored he shared something so special with his fans, “ said Barry .

Watching David perform “rekindled” her love of photography says Barry “I never realized that taking photos of David could make such an impact in my life.” The self taught photographer started shooting photos at age 10. She bought her first SLR Canon 40D, 6 years ago, and says that “After meeting David my photography took on a whole new perspective. If it wasn’t for the amazing support of David’s fans, I am not sure where my photography would be today. David has the best fans, period!”

Her “photo philosophy” : “I believe photography allows you to capture a moment in time that you can cherish forever. A photo can capture a moment that 10 years from now, a person can look at it and remember the feelings they had or memories they had simply by looking at a photo.” Her favorite shots are candid shots because as she says they “allow you to really capture someone. I love to capture who someone truly is in a photo.” She also enjoys shooting landscapes, flowers, horses, aviation, and sports.

She is inspired by the work of photographer Barbara Livingston who takes photos of horses. Said Barry “She takes amazing photographs of horses. She truly captures the beauty of a horse. Her photograph can tell a story by simply looking at it, which is what I hope to achieve in my photography.” Another photographer she admires is photographer Matthew McDermott, who captured the shot of a young boy being rescued 8 days after being buried in rubble in Haiti. “I checked out his photos and he captures the moment, whether harsh to look at or not, he captures the feelings”, said Barry

She says she has been able to get her amazing shots of David by being “lucky to get great seats”. Other times she says “ I had to wait patiently to see if better seats open up…the closer the better to take pictures. But it isn’t easy because camera polices vary from every venue you go to see a concert.”

She had been planning the calendar since her last one in 2009. The 2010 charity calendar “Be The Change, Be The Difference” David Archuleta Calendar so that all proceeds can go to support CRUSH MS. Said Barry “I created it in hopes of raising money and awareness to support Crush MS which is an important charity to David because so many people close to him like Brett Hales have been diagnosed with it. After being diagnosed with MS he (Brett Hales) has such an amazing spirit and outlook that impresses me and I am very inspired by him, which is why I wanted to try and “do a little” for MS” said Barry .

Quick backstory: Jim Cantiello tweeted tonight from backstage at MTV after the Hope for Haiti Now telethon.  MTV producers met up with David Archuleta, who gave an impromptu mini-concert for the camera backstage.  This video will be posted on Monday to MTV.com.

Jim is such a good sport and kind fanboy to David fans for keeping us up-to-date and having fun with us, that a mini “Cupcakes for Jim” campaign began via Twitter!  But TOFan from Snowangelz had a great idea.  Why not send Jim a picture of a cupcake and donate the money raised to Haitian relief?  PERFECT!  MomJulee quickly organized how to donate and here we are.

David has the most amazing and GOOFY fans.  This little impromptu project is yet another example of people who care about David trying to emulate his morals and work ethic in whatever way they can.  Good times…

Among David Archuleta’s incredible qualities is his big ol’ heart and how quickly he is ready to use it to inspire and give back.  It was very clear, not only how David chose to inspire with song but also how he literally put his money where his mouth is in encouraging his fans to donate to charities.

Since his time in the limelight, David has done what he could to promote charity work – Invisible Children, Rising Star Outreach, the Lisa Lopes Foundation, etc. – and his Arch Angels have matched him in kind – from donating the most funds for Stand Up 2 Cancer to building the Angels for a Cause network.  David has given us so much, and we are so eager and willing to give because he urges us to.

That’s what is often called Star Power, and it’s a quality that many celebrities have adopted: Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, and the Star Power charity poster boy himself, Bono from U2.  I am impressed most by David’s efforts, of course, not just because I’m a hardcore David fan but because he’s perhaps the one with the least money out of these celebs, and he’s already mobilizing on behalf of the less fortunate to bring attention to their needs.  AI gave him a platform from which to launch himself, and already, charity work is at the core of what he wishes to do with his talents and career.

I think of David’s star power and charity work because we are in the midst of a terrible tragedy that unfolded in Haiti last week with a devastating earthquake.  Tonight, a telethon, spearheaded by Clooney and Wyclef Jean, airs on all the major networks at 8 pm EST to request donations for this disaster. I’m so pleased that David will be apart of the musical spectacle, as he already has faith that we will adhere to his tweet last week imploring us to “not be afraid and give what we can.”

I think of David and his sincerity because this past week fellow music artist Wyclef came under scrutiny when his NGO, Yele Haiti, which managed to raise $2 million in donations, was accused of corruption and financial mismanagement.  Considering that Wyclef immediately requested aid through his foundation the day that the disaster struck and that he immediately flew down to the island to do what he could to help, I find it suspect that certain journalists and gossip mongers took the time to dig up dirt and sling mud at his efforts.  I do not doubt he has made mistakes, but I personally don’t see anything wrong if he was able to raise that many donations in such a short period of time (he accepted $5 text donations).  I pay more to see a movie for crying out loud; you only hope that those who are raising funds for a disaster will put the money to good use.

A high profile celebrity spearheading his own organization hardly seems scandalous to me, and knowing that he was helping to bury his fellow Haitians last week, I’d rather hear about these efforts than to hear him defend Yele Haiti, which was an active NGO long before the Haiti earthquake. Still, if a spotlight has shown suddenly on his organization, at least he now knows he has to be above board with his financial dealings.

I raise the specter of Wyclef’s Yele Haiti because it’s indicative of Star Power and its ability to mobilize so quickly even as it is also subject to public scrutiny.  What David is doing (and what others tend to do) makes the most sense: partnering up with existing charities and using one’s high profile status to bring attention to the work such organizations conduct and how our donations will be used to support such work.

I tend to have an ambivalent attitude towards charity organizations myself.  I do not hesitate to donate in the wake of disasters, but in the long term, my philosophy tends to be:

Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat forever.

The charity I cherish is the one in which what we give lasts a lifetime. I only pray that this terrible disaster is an immense opportunity for nation-building and a stronger Haiti.  To waste this opportunity with scandal, corruption, and failed humanity would be a sin and a crime.

I’m all about education, and someone like David can teach us so much: about faith, hope, and above all these, charity.
