David Archuleta Blogs from Afghanistan Sat, 19 Jul 2014 06:48:21 +0000 PHOTO-1-768x1024

18 July 2014

daafghblog_banner1-140x140Hey everyone,

I have written a letter to my family and friends, but I decided that I should share it with all of you as well:

First off, I am sorry that I can never write less than an essay and that my emails are always so long! But please bear with me and my imperfections with this one.

I wanted to write to all of you seeing as this last week has been quite incredible for me. Right now I am writing this to you as blasting winds full of dust attack my face and my eyes (I’m outside to have some time to myself). I am currently in Afghanistan, and as I don’t know when I will ever be here again I would like to take the time to write to you under interesting circumstances.

What am I doing here? I was invited by a man named Dan Clark. He is a world renown speaker who is the main contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. He has spoken many, many times to the troops all over the world. We are joined by a professional impersonator/comedian named Jason Hewlett (he’s hilarious), and my voice trainer Dean Kaelin (accompanying me on the piano and guitar, and performing himself a number) to do a military tour. It is a tour with the focus to inspire and give an uplifting message to the troops as we entertain.

July 8th we left for the Middle East. We began in the country of Bahrain– a country I had never even heard of before. Afterwards we went to Kuwait. It was amazing to see how empty it is here terrain-wise: sand, sun, dust, and desert. However, due to oil and gas these are very wealthy countries. We visited an Islamic mosque and I was amazed to see that they believe in prophets, and even believe in Jesus Christ… As a prophet of God; not as the Only Begotten, yet they believe that He will come again. It is Ramadan here which is the month of fasting, where they cannot eat or drink from sunrise until sunset. We cannot eat or drink in front of them, and have to keep long-sleeve shirts and pants when in public Muslim-eye to not offend their traditions.

Anyway, this is a military tour, not a desert tourist trip. I wanted to express my love for these military men and women. Here in Afghanistan– along with in Iraq–they are in combat and there are attacks going on. I was surprised at the friendships and the respect the local people have with and for the troops, as the reason why we have been in these countries is to protect these people from opposing groups who seek for power and are extremists and terrorists trying to overtake the countries. We are now making transitions to let the Afghan military take charge of defending their own country so that they may strengthen their own sense of duty and value those rights and liberties more by taking the lead themselves.

We have met so many fathers who have yet to meet their newborn babies in person; they are out in this blazing heat of 100-140 degrees day to day (and wow it feels like a hair-dryer blowing in your face!). We have seen and felt their appreciation for us being here as we “come out of our way” to meet with them, perform for them, and let them know we love them — it is the LEAST we can do!! It is amazing to have them come up and say, “you don’t know how much this means to us. Thank you for coming to see us and break the routine. You bring a piece of home.”

These are people who learn what the word “duty” means. They literally put their lives on the line with rockets being shot at the bases, mines exploding their and civilians’ paths, and suicide bombers coming at them. It is real, but they do it because of their duty to our families and to our country, and to their duty to protecting countries and people who cannot do it alone. How grateful I am for their dedication and for them being awakened to their duty.

I hope the next time you see one of these service men and women, you think of their commitment that they have to this duty: to protecting our amazing and beautiful country where we have freedom, and working to help others have freedom as well. We take what we have for granted– whether- we go to the air-conditioned malls, or sit at our peaceful homes bored. Let us think twice about our liberty that we have in this promised land, and how God has truly blessed us. During this trip we are also getting to do some special faith-based events that we call firesides. It has been a wonderful bonus to the trip.

We have one more week of shows, and I will try and give you another (shorter) update as we come to a close.

I hope you are all well!

P.S. I’ve attached some photos

David Archuleta : The Ambassador Wed, 25 Sep 2013 17:13:29 +0000 DA @ EKS interview 22 oct 2010

Look what I found in my vid vault – a three-year old interview that I have not seen before! And the source of the gorgeous image above :)

Families, friends and his associates have said that David is one to be always on the look out for ways to help. A trait that has endeared him to many.

By helping people, he recognizes and demonstrates the amazing potential each person has to effect real and positive change in the world through simple yet powerful acts of kindness.

Indeed, David is an ambassador of kindness.

Whether in his home state Utah or the asphalt jungle that is Hollywood or the lovely scapes across South America, David delivers his own brand of ambassadorship with uncommon grace, inspiring humility and indefatigable spirit.

Thank you David for making a difference.

Ashton Redefines Sexy and I Think of Archie Sun, 18 Aug 2013 02:44:54 +0000

Whenever the Teen Choice Awards season turns our corner, Archies rejoice because it gives us hope to see David on TV or walk the red carpet. Except of course for this last couple of years.

But the 2013 TCA show offered a nice surprise. Ashton Kutcher, recipient of TCA’s Ultimate Choice Award, delivered a heartfelt and strong message to the youth. He advised the largely-teen & tween audience about three things he’d learned growing up and getting into the industry — 1st, that “opportunity looks a lot like work”. 2nd, that the “sexiest thing in the entire world is being really smart”. And third, to “build a life,” not just to live one. This, from a guy who has risen to stardom mostly as an airhead hunk. But despite the shallow objectification of Kutcher’s movie roles, he actually strikes me as someone deep.

The sexiest thing in the entire world… is being really smart. And being thoughtful. And being generous. Everything else is crap! I promise you! It’s just crap that people try to sell to you to make you feel like less. So don’t buy it! Be smart. Be thoughtful. And be generous.

Given the slew of media coverage on young famous people acting like anything but role models, this message deserves to be highlighted.

What’s more, I celebrate it! David Archuleta comes to mind with Kutcher’s message.

The Smart & Thoughtful David

To this day, am still amazed and thankful of the thoughtful planning and preparation that David and his team committed to prior to his mission. David not only made sure that his fans would have something of him during his 2-year absence. TheArchuletor reached for relevancy by addressing his audience with his timed-release gifts.

And that’s being smart.

Sometime in 2008, Rascal commented on Dean Kaelin’s ebook which I think encapsulates the foregoing:

The David Archuleta we meet in these pages is to a certain extent familiar–the gentle nature, the humility and integrity–but there is also a David we could only ever surmise by the results we would see on the stage each week: the determined and careful craftsman, the analyst and planner, and yes, even the strategist. Even with a gift of talent as abundant as David’s, accomplishment and success in the real world does not come without enormous sacrifice and dedication. David may be a sweet and tender soul, but he is also a beast of a hard worker.

The Generous David

For celebrities, time is a luxury. Yet in David’s case, it is readily available gift that he shares with those in need. Generous with his time, heart and talent, there are hundreds of stories and accounts shared through the Archu-years but the story below, as shared by @gemzone, is one of my favorites.

So I was working in Cottonwood Heights in Salt Lake County and a new client told me that her daughters took voice from Dean Kaelin. Their lessons were always right after Davids. She said that they would get there early just to listen to him. All this before Idol. Anyway one day they had to wait a little longer because David had been late to his lesson. Dean told them that David had been a half hour late. Said he came running in apologizing for being late. But he (David) had been out for a run and as he was running saw an older women out weeding all by herself and felt like he should stop and help her. Said he didn’t want her to have to do it all by herself. So he helped weed until it was all weeded. So that was why he was late. She (my new client) said that Dean told David it was OK because he just proved to be the better man because of his character.

Taking Opportunities; Building a Life

Showbiz is not normally the place to look for role models. But once in a while, it keeps a gem like David whose sparkle inspires and moves people in ways exceeding even his own imagination.

He does this by being JustDavid. Yet, he also goes beyond his comfort zone to take opportunities available. By doing so, our David is building his life, not just living it.

Ashton, unknowingly could have been talking of our David with his acceptance speech. Thanks Ashton/Chris for a wonderful speech.

Thanks David for allowing us to witness the opportunities you work hard for, for building a life and for being “always sexy”. May your tribe increase!

~ JR

ps: This is not the 1st Kutcher-Archuleta connection. The 1st time was during AIS7, caught in his interview with 97.1 ZHT during his UT homecoming. The DJ plays an audio of Ashton talking about David. It starts at 1:00 mark

Memorial Day Sat, 25 May 2013 15:20:20 +0000 american-flags-at-cemetery-48082ba24a96f236

On this Memorial Day weekend, we at TDC wish to salute the brave men and women of the armed forces who have lost their lives in service to us – to allow us the freedoms we enjoy here in the USA. No one sings patriotic songs with more heart and genuine feeling than David. And I could think of no better way than to share a few of the best renditions of the songs that we share as a people, that ring out our hard-won sense of one country, no matter our faith, our politics or our often loud disagreements. In the end we are one nation…..

The Star Spangled Banner

My Country Tis of Thee/ America The Beautiful

Please share with us your own favorite renditions!

No Matter How Far Snippets & Fan Reactions Fri, 01 Mar 2013 04:38:30 +0000 Tweet-David-NMHF-on-iTunes

NMHF on itunes

From the time the track listing of David’s 6th studio album had been released, fan reaction has been like a pendulum on a swing – from the expected spazz-like kind to downright disappointment – the latter being a surprise.

The spazzfest that ensued is par for the course, I suppose. I mean we are a spazz-infested fandom, aren’t we? LOL. But it is taking me a while to comprehend the disappointment I have been getting from some fans.

Is the disenchantment coming from the album having just one bonafide new song? After Forevermore and BEGIN., do we realistically expect to have a spanking new album with all fresh tracks?

Considering that our guy was recording till the eve of his departure for BEGIN., when do we realistically expect him to work on some more fresh tracks?

Let’s slice & dice the track listing, shall we?
1 New – HFA
1 New but previously leaked – DRA
4 Bonus track from TOSOD Asian Ed – EAM, LDH, NM & Wait
1 Bonus track from TOSOD JPN & UK Ed – NEBTD
3 OPM album – Tell Me, ING & Forevermore

Given that 80% of the album are tracks not released in the US, am taking this 6th studio album of David as (1) a way to reach out, specifically to US listeners – fans & non-fans alike, and (2) to keep his presence even in a small way in the music world.

Am I begrudging my disappointed co-Archies? No. Am just sad that they feel that way. My hope is that they are just a minority.

Now that the snippets of the new song has been released, can we expect the disenchanted to turn around or be turned off?

Will the album or any of its tracks have any bit of chance to make waves in the US? That is a very nice notion. Realistic? Probably not, given the state of the music industry that David left behind. But you never know…

For me, anything released by Team Archuleta during his supposed sabbatical is icing on the cake. And grateful for them.

But then again, to release NMHF through Entertainment One Music – “the #1 Independent Music Brand in North America” is a good sign that David intends to follow through with his promise to return to music.

It would be interesting to see in two years time, what David will find when he makes his comeback. More important is what David will bring in. Will the twain ever meet?

What do you think?

In Memoriam – Prayer of the Children Fri, 14 Dec 2012 21:33:43 +0000 Prayer of the Children

Today, tragedy struck in Connecticut, taking 20 children and 6 adults away from their families and loved ones. It is so hard to understand how something like this can happen. Why innocent children were struck down so heartlessly.

And whenever I need some comfort, a soothing voice to still my internal raging and sorrow, I can count on looking for music from David. David has a special place in his heart for children; he has given of himself to countless charities that impact children specifically.

This special song, written by Kurt Bestor, seems to be the most closely aligned to what we all might be feeling today.  God bless the children.
