… one large aspect about following David’s career includes the relationships developed through fan interactions. The fan community has truly become an extended family and I am grateful for the friendships I’ve cultivated. In my off-line activities, I lead a very busy life with a professional job that is frequently stressful and totally cerebral. I truly treasure the fan community that has given my life another necessary outlet of joy and fun.

To be a part of the David Archuleta fan community is indeed some kind of experience. It has served as a veritable refuge for a lot of Archies.

Some Kind of Wonderful

Found yourself temporarily isolated from families and friends who are unable to appreciate or even begin to understand your fascination with David? Go to a David fansite and immediately you feel better. In fact you heave a sigh of relief discovering you’re sane and not alone with the cra-zeh-ness. Suddenly you find that all is well with the world, right?

Who would have thought that by merely following an artist, you would reap friends beyond your own borders and establish virtual spazz-mates, like you have known each other for a lifetime?

Or that you find yourself sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings about a young man who has enthralled millions with his music – with people you have never even met!

And then you rely on and are thankful for people who would share stories, recorded footage of his performances or glorious photographs — people who sacrifice their personal experience just so a whole lot more can enjoy David as if they were there with him.

What about the heartwarming stories on the generosity of Archies being spread across cities and continents to help out other Archies with their ODD? The help can run the gamut of so many forms — from CD/DVD/book gifting, to memorabilia sharing or concert ticket sponsoring or even air mileage sharing!

However, for every upside, there is a downside. Consider these:

• What if there are Archies who have the penchant for spreading rumors for their own enjoyment, cyber-bullying and ridiculing other Archies on subjects they have no business of?
• What if a couple of fans use the name and resources of an established fan group to advance a fan activity and when finally securing the much sought after activity, make it secret, create its own club and exclude the very same established group from participating from it?
• What if there is a fan club who sells materials from other people’s work? And that the owners of the materials have no knowledge of such merchandising?
• What if there are Archies who are skilled in twisting information with unsuspecting Archies to make others look bad?
• And what if all of these “what ifs” are associated with a single group who claim to represent the Archies even to David’s Team, who they are wooing for a project?

Am sure you will ask – WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?

Kindness, Honesty as the Ultimate Currency

For me, the prime currency running within this community is kindness and honesty. Having David as the crux of our fandom seems to require that, right?

You go to another country just so you can see David perform live – not knowing anyone personally – and BAM! You are given a warm welcome, treated like a family member and have the time of your life because you are among “your people” LOL.

You share a little of what you know about some technical stuff online and SWOOSH! People you do not even “talk to” on a regular basis suddenly send you tokens and gifts!

It is not all paradise of course. Like any organization or family, we have our “misadventures”.

If there are misunderstandings, they are threshed out as sane and responsible adults. In private. If you make a mistake, you take corrective measures carefully keeping everyone’s dignity still intact. Hopefully.

So fan sites and fan bases co-exist cordially. This is what I have witnessed for the past three years.

But since we come from different backgrounds and persuasions, entwined by our love for David and his artistry, then there is indeed that chance of falling into a false sense of security with the fandom.

For if the above “what ifs” actually transpired, then having David as an artist and a person to emulate does not necessarily translate to Archies being like-minded and kindred spirits.

And IF we indeed have this situation, should the community care? Should other Archies be alarmed? Is there anything that should be done in the 1st place? Do we just let time heal the hurts? Risk the misunderstandings and misinformation fester and damage people’s reputation based on ill-talks? Or do we just pray and hope for the best?

If we regard this fan community as an extended family, how do we deal with such scenarios if they come to pass?

My take is that if there are personal animosities among the Archies (and am sure there are in every fanbase!), that cannot be helped. But the friction should not spill into David’s business. Moreover, I will take exception when actions – especially those that involve pulling a fast one over another fan club – are done deliberately and that further actions are made with malice and with an abject sense of propriety or decency.

I am sure that a whole lot more of kindness and just deeds go untold and are not made public. They are the unseen generosity that do not expect any ROI, except for the simple joy it delivers for both the giver and the recipient. I hope we get to learn more of these exemplary acts.

So for these unsung heroes or shall we say ODD enablers (chuckles), my esteemed regard and appreciation!

Sunshine seems to follow David Archuleta. Or is it the other way around – that David brings sunshine wherever he goes? Cos that was surely the case when he was here in Manila.

July being known as a typhoon month in these parts, Manila Archies were a bit concerned. But upon David’s arrival on the 17th, the lovely Manila skies opened up to greet him with the warmest of all reception. And as you can see in the July weather calendar below, it stayed that way throughout his visit

Then as he left Manila’s area of responsibility shortly before noon on the 21st, the sunny skies suddenly retreated, turned downcast and grey. It was as if the weather was on a melancholy pause…

I twitted this observation to a number of Archies and they replied back that their spouses/parents said the same dang thing!

That afternoon, the skies gave way to torrential rains. The downpour continues to this day.

Epic Month
July 2011 will always be remembered as the epic Asian Tour month. With an estimated concert ticket sales of over 35,000 from his 5-leg Asian tour spread over 12 days and priceless media mileage across the South East Asian region, David can sure beam that irresistible mega-watt smile for a job well done!

As early as now, Manila Archies are already talking of DALIM4. The rest of the Asian countries he visited are campaigning for a Christmas Tour. Well, if that ever pushes through, David will have to brace himself for how Manila celebrates Christmas.

At the very least, it will surely be an unforgettable experience for him and his team. Being the only Christian nation in the whole of Asia, we’re pretty cra-zeh about Christmas festivities. Consider this: you can hear Christmas songs here as early as October and the length of the Yuletide celebration runs till the 1st week of January. Told you, we’re a crazy lot, LOL

Missing David
We miss you buddy. We miss your warmth, your kindness, your generosity. We miss your appreciation and respect for different cultures. We miss your engaging and inspiring spirit.

We miss your “I-am-not-better-than-anyone-of-you” philosophy which you put to action wherever you go. This is something that a lot of us can take a page from. That is one reason why Asia will always be here for someone like you, David

So we are all waiting for the least bit of information about what David is up to. We read his tweets and speculate about his songwriting, hope for a tour and watch for any sign of an upcoming appearance. We are making ourselves a little crazy. So while we wait and wait and wait, maybe we could rejoice in the gifts and skills of David’s fans.

Recently, while wandering through Youtube, I noticed a large number of David Archuleta Tribute videos created by fans, and very good ones at that. The time and love put into these videos is obvious, and the range of styles is indicative of the fanbase itself – diverse!

Ranging from those that use David’s own songs to those that play something that speaks to the producer’s heart, many musical genre’s are represented. Some fans use still photos and produce a wonderful montage of David. Others play with splicing together pieces of performance videos in such a way as to capture all the glorious or cute or intense moments David gives us on stage.

Sometimes it takes a miracle to reignite a person’s passion. Sometimes when you least expect it, the tables turn and that scary feeling that has taken a hold of you for so long somehow turns into hope. Music can be so much more than entertainment. With music we can all speak the same language and we can relate to one another’s joys and pains.

Here are some tips if you want to send mail or letters asking for an autograph. If you are sending fan mail (is there any other kind of mail to send to a fan mail address?) you should do the following:

1. Be polite and courteous (Okay, I suppose some hater could get up enough gumption to send something impolite, but you don’t need to say this to an “Archie”)

2. Keep your letter short and to the point (Oh, you can forget about this. Do you think any of David’s fans can send him a letter that doesn’t include a thank you for everything he’s ever said, a complete retelling of how they discovered him on Idol and how he changed their lives, quotes from his vlogs, a list of all of David’s concerts they’ve been to along with moment by moment glowing reviews and their hopes and dreams for his future?)

3. Mention something, or many things, that you admire about him (And you think this is hard, or we might forget to do this?  Sheesh! See #2 above.)

4. Ask for exactly what you want (Noooooo, no,no,no,no…..you never say this to David Archuleta’s fans. No, no, no. Especially if there are cougars lurking.)

5. Check your spelling and grammar (Yes, we all know David is actually an excellent speller – and even corrects himself when he makes a tiny mistake on a tweet, but truly, this ever forgiving soul would never mention it!)

6. Include a stamped-self-addressed-envelope (SSAE) (Really!  REALLY!  Do you think he’ll answer?    And, by the way, when did it change from SASE to SSAE?)

**Do not send bulky items, perishables like flowers or anything that would spoil, keep it simple to a postcard or letter. Due to security guidelines set at CBS your package or box may or may not make it. KEEP IT SIMPLE! The origin of the disorder is similarly problematic.   Archuleta, the causative factor, is not a virus, though he has been known to mutate at the rate of one with successive tours.  He is, despite speculation and ponderous studies by paranormal psychologists and theologists,  a member of the species Homo sapiens.  Extensive research to the contrary  is neither empirical, conclusive, or even compelling in its claims that he is extraterrestrial or other than human in nature.   Archuleta himself denies such allegations, but since he is the causative factor of the malady, his words are not scientifically credible.

This leads to a stalemate of sorts.  We can not eliminate or even slow the progress of an evolved and evolving entity that by rational analysis  is one of us.  To do so is tantamount to impeding our own progress as a  race.  Moreover, it has become increasingly clear that we must despair of ever convincing those who have contracted ODD to accept any amelioration of their coveted symptoms.   No fatalities have been reported, excepting one incidence during a performance of Don’t Let Go, which has since been disproved.  There have been however, numerous documented cases of a brief loss of consciousness, or “Archustupor,”  precipitated by a too close proximity to the person of Mr. Archuleta.  Therein follows several days where speech skills are severely compromised and tears are common, but tests prove there are no long-term debilitating effects.

In the light of these seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the only solution may be radical – to do nothing at all.  The growing consensus among the medical community is to simply let the disease or his-ease, as the case may be, run its course.  Ironically, resistance is not only futile, it may even be counterproductive.  Over time, ODD  may prove to be the greatest enhancement to the overall health of mankind since the discovery of penicillin.
