After the Grand Fans’ Day, David went straight to the taping rehearsal of Talentadong Pinoy. In one take each, he completed performing the 1st ever official public performance of “Nandito Ako” and Where Ever You Are – two songs that will form part of the Nandito Ako’s OST. Am sure we are giddy with anticipation to get our hands of OST tracks, right?

In the meantime, let’s relish his debut performance on TV of Nandito Ako. TDC has two of each song, the official airing on Feb 5, 2012 and the rehearsal taping performance which I was lucky to witness

David Archuleta says doing ‘Nandito Ako’ was life-changing experience

He might as well be called a Pinoy idol. After 15 days of continuous shooting for TV5′s much-awaited mini-serye, “Nandito Ako,” international singing star David Archuleta faced media members one last time on Saturday evening before he finally left the country early Sunday morning to go to Singapore for another engagement, and back to the US to prepare for his two-year missionary work.

Despite fatigue and sore throat setting in as a result of his hectic schedule that included finishing his scenes for the mini-serye, TV guestings, and a grand fans day on Friday night, the 21-year-old singer showed that he was a pro and a really nice guy by saying yes to a request to sing the mini-serye’s theme song, “Nandito Ako”.

In his striking crooning that was once described by New York times as a “lovely, foggy R&B voice,” David impressed the audience with his heartfelt rendition of “Nandito Ako,” prompting a group of writers to comment that David seems to have imbibed the romantic song’s lyrics.

In an interview, Joanne Banaga, one of the mini-serye’s supervising producers, said David had a grueling itinerary that involved taping on weekdays and doing promotions on weekends. Yet through it all, “He wasn’t difficult to work it. You call him at this hour or you tell him not to wrap up yet, and even if he’s sleepy, he just sings or jogs to wake himself up. The only challenge that came up while working with him is that you invest in an emotion and you get to like him. He’s like a son to you. You get attached to him. Sobra. He’s so humble that he’s not comfortable when you try to praise him.

“And ‘good’ is not okay with him. He wants to give his best all the time.”

At the press conference held at the Meralco Fitness Center in Ortigas where David was presented along with the other cast members of the TV drama series, he admitted that he’s going to miss working with his fellow actors especially since they’ve become closer to each other. Asked whether he’s developed something more than just friendship with either Jasmine Curtis-Smith or Eula Caballero, his co-actors in the series, David replied: “I’m always being asked about that! It was really fun working with Jasmine and Eula. They’re both just really great actresses and great girls. It’s just been so great and everyone’s been supportive. I don’t want it to stop.”

In the beginning, however, when the TV5 project was first presented to him, David confessed his reluctance to come to the Philippines and accept the acting project. “When the offer first came, I was a bit reluctant because I didn’t know what the experience would be like – to be away from home to do a series, which is something that I’ve never done before. I really had my concerns and my doubts.

“But what really made it great was that I started to get out of my comfort zone, including trying more food and being more adventurous. Everyone was supportive and the TV5 management was just so easy to work with. (The experience) has made me more mature. This isn’t something that I would normally do but I was willing to take on the challenge. I just had time enough before I go on with missionary work for a couple of years. It’s been exciting and it just taught me a lot about myself as a person. It’s so weird because I didn’t expect that at all.”

On his fifth visit and his longest stay in the country, David fulfilled his wish to ride a jeepney again and to visit a local market. David was also spotted backstage at the recent Annebisyosa concert of Jasmine’s sister, Anne Curtis. David dropped by, accompanied by some TV5 crew, halfway through the concert mainly to show support for Jasmine who was a guest in the concert.

Jasmine said she invited David to Anne’s show but had advised him beforehand: “She’s not really a singer.”

But the American Idol Season 7 Finalist said that, all the same, he enjoyed the concert. “It was really fun but what I really respected about Anne was the message she was showing to people, to follow your dreams. She was open about not being a great singer out there but she still sang, ‘You know, I can do this, as long as I’m willing to work hard and do my best, and so can you.’ I really appreciate the message that she’s trying to bring and she’s encouraging more people to do the same thing.”

Now that he’s completed his work for “Nandito Ako,” David expressed his openness to exploring an acting career. “This has been one of the best experiences in my life. I’m not a great actor and this is something new to me. But I hope to continue because this is something that I would love to work on and enjoy. It’s such a great thing to share with people.”

After a week of working the cameras for his initial foray into serious acting, David now starts working the malls and selected TV shows to promote Nandito Ako, TV5′s most anticipated mini-series!

A side note: It had been discussed in these boards that something happens to David’s aura when he is in Manila. The light inside him seem to be magnified ten-fold whenever he is in the tropics. The guy literally sparkles!

David was very touched and everyone in VIP sounded AMAZING singing it. We have it on video. It was hard to not cry your eyes out for that. It was so emotional and David lives every word of that song every day. It was beautiful! He … answered questions… he already knows where he is going on his Mission but wants to keep in a bit private for now but he said he knows it … will impact him when he is there and when he gets home as well. David explained some of his favorite parts of tour. He was very chatty! And just presh!

Over the past week, fans have excitedly and sometimes struggled to put their impressions of this tour’s Christmas concerts into words. It has been a delight to read each fan’s different perspectives that focus on various aspects of David’s performances and the entire concert experience.

I will not repeat what others have already said, only to mention that I, too, was left speechless by the power of the performances. Now, a week after my concert, I am still shaking my head in wonder at the sheer passion and joy in these performances. How can I possibly communicate this experience and yet not replicate what others have already stated?

Turning Stone Entrance: We're Here!

Although I welcomed the joy of the tour’s performances, I knew that the recap might be a challenge to write because the past few months have not been easy for me as a David fan. Quite frankly, I am very burned out on the topic of David’s future direction and any other choices, even though I am confident that he has much untapped potential that will be unleashed with continued growth and the right people around him. The burn-out, though, has given me a sense of freedom and even peace. Over the past month, I decided to just let go, stop worrying over things I can do absolutely nothing about, and allow things to happen as they will. The result has freed me to simply come back to where it all began: that incredible pliable, foggy-singed, and soulful voice.

A Fan Convention in Verona

As I arrived at the casino last Saturday, the excitement over meeting other fans and attending the meet and greet quickly overshadowed any lingering thoughts that I had. I am very grateful for the two fans (you know who you are) who graciously invited me to travel with them by car from Ohio to New York. It was delightful to get to know them and share many laughs that we will remember for years to come.

As we approached Verona, my friend’s car had a digital display that counted down the miles to the casino. We called out the decreasing miles as we drew closer to our destination. “Fifty more miles! 10 more miles!” It was at once agonizing and exciting to see the miles finally dwindle down to zero. We’re here!

We arrived at the venue about three hours before the meet and greet. This was my first visit to a casino, and I felt as though I had stepped back into a 1970s’ evening television drama with the brown décore, cigarette smoke, and flashy evening gowns around me. However, knowing that it may well be my last visit to a casino, it was fascinating to observe the casino’s various restaurants and activity.

As with any David concert, a large part of the fun is catching up with old and new friends. I was absolutely dying to meet some of the fans that I knew would be at this venue. I’ve traveled to a good number of concerts in the past few years and have had the good fortune to meet many fans already. However, this East Coast concert introduced me to a whole new group of fans. Despite the fact that we have worked together at TDC for almost three years, I had never even met Marlie in person! We were long overdue for a visit. I admire HG’s thoughtful and prolific writing as another blogger, and I could not wait to meet her for the first time. Additionally, there were so many other online fan friends from across the sites and fandom I had yet to meet: Burkey, Sandy Beaches, Silverfox, Muldur, Emily4Archie, and many more. It was delightful to share recollections and humor with these fans over dinner and drinks during the weekend.

Passion, Snow, and Sound

Of course, the meet and greet and concert were the weekend’s highlights. No doubt many readers have already watched the Verona videos and read other recaps, so I will not repeat what others have recounted in detail. I thoroughly enjoyed my brief chat with David about a shared topic of interest, and the VIP performance’s intimacy reminded me of a small house concert. After weeks of having no David fans around my immediate locale, it was a joy to be in a small room with more than 100 other passionate fans who believed in David’s talent and future potential.

The performance. To borrow a British term, I was simply gobsmacked by his confident control of the stage, dance moves, vocal versatility, and the band’s cohesion. The band had tweaked the show a bit since Westbury. The inclusion of “Little Drummer Boy” as the finale was a fantastic choice. I will never forget witnessing the breathless moment of David holding up those two drumsticks before pounding out the song’s last part on Steven’s bass drum. As David sang “Silent Night,” the falling snow was a magical touch. I lifted my hands at one point to just catch the snow as it fell in the soft blue light.

The venue’s acoustics were an essential part of the Verona show. When the show began, I internally scolded myself for forgetting my earplugs because I am usually very careful about ear protection at loud concerts. However, it turned out that I did not need them. The rich acoustics actually reminded me of the House of Blues show in Chicago in March 2009. The sound was deep and vibrant, yet not overwhelmingly loud because it seemed to travel upward and around the room without much echo.

As I reflect on the show more than a week later, it is difficult to encapsulate the dynamic show in just a few paragraphs. However, my feeling of optimism remains. I may not understand all of the choices made so far or in the future with David’s career, and the ride may be a little bumpy at times, but to echo Marlie’s sentiment, I am confident that we are seeing the early days of the legendary voice of David’s generation. Let’s all just hang on and enjoy the ride.
