DAVID ARCHULETA’S NANDITO AKO EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS By EDGAR O. CRUZ

The best expectations for Nandito Ako’s pilot last night happened without too much effort!

On its first airing, lead actor David Archuleta appeared when the mini-serye opted to start with David singing the team song in a grand concert in the present time. This effective technique avoided fans from waiting in case of a straight retelling of the story.

Nandito opted for straight narrative allowing logical storytelling and avoiding the use of flashbacks that could be confusing to young viewers.

A fast-paced series, the first edition managed to summarize a plausible start-up story in all of 45 minutes, from the back story of Josh Bradley, David’s character, how he got separated from his mother (as played by G Tongi) to live abroad and his decision to return to the country as a singing idol. Director Mac Alejandre effectively mixed big and small scenes to recreate the story, mixing tenderness and tension to kick off a story worth following.

Early at this point, it shows that Nandito Ako is enjoying heavy placements from advertisers. Even before it could start, commercials started airing. This distribution scheme was effective enough to prevent viewers from thinking/feeling they were watching TVCs instead of the drama series.

Willie Revillame’s Wil Time Big Time ended right on time at exactly 9:15 p.m., preventing viewers from waiting which could have led them to channel surf or dose off if it aired overtime.

Nandito Ako should set up a model for TV5 how to do its shows. Instead of keeping up with competition, it must create its own rules. By featuring an actor with real instead of expected demand, TV5 effectively focused on the show’s promotion instead of creating demand for it.

If I were you, I will not rely on the ratings charts as Kantar Media / TNS and People’s Rating will naturally report ABS-CBN and GMA-7 ratings respectively as superior to TV5’s for the timeslot. If you enjoyed Nandito Ako, that’s enough proof it’s a blockbuster hit!

FROM SINGING TO ACTING TO SERVICE By RONALD S. LIM

MANILA, Philippines — The past month has been replete with new milestones for American Idol grad David Archuleta.

For one, there is his first turn as an actor for the new TV5 serye “Nandito Ako” alongside local talents Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero.

The 21 year-old also recorded his own version of the song “Nandito Ako”, a bestselling tune that was composed by Aaron Paul del Rosario and first popularized by OPM legends Ogie Alcasid and Lea Salonga. The only other foreign artist to record it was Mexican songstress, Thalia, and it resulted in a bestselling album for her here in the country.

By next month, Archuleta will be experiencing yet another milestone as he takes a two-year break from showbiz to become a Mormon missionary. Just like his decision to pursue acting in the Philippines, it’s not the most conventional way to go about with a Hollywood career – but that’s exactly how Archuleta wants to do it.

“It’s always a scary thing when you make a decision that everybody tells you doesn’t make sense. You never know what’s going to happen. But it was kind of the same thing with American Idol. I didn’t know what was going to happen. It ended up being so fulfilling for my life. This is just another one of those things,” he explains.

A NEW EXPERIENCE

Archuleta says it was with the very same trepidation that he took on his hand at acting here in the Philip-pines. While he has already appeared on shows like “iCarly” and “Hannah Montana” playing himself, his role in the TV5 serye as international artist Josh Bradley is his first time actually acting as a character.

“I was very reluctant because I didn’t know what this experience would be like. I would have to go out and be such a long way from home for such a long time. It was something that I’ve never done before,” he says. “But TV5 was always very open and easy to work with and they made things very easy and comfortable for me. It just showed even more when I arrived here.”

That arrival back in January was the beginning of what would be almost two months of acting workshops, recording sessions, and shooting scenes in Metro Manila.

Being a newbie actor working with far more seasoned thespians presented a lot of challenges, not the least of which is the fact that he had to interact with them in Filipino – a language he only knows bits and pieces of.

“Coming into it I was very nervous since I’m not an actor. It’s a job that I don’t really know how to do. They tried to keep the Tagalog words as simple as they could so it could sound natural. It was a challenge be-cause the rest of the cast most of the time would be speaking in Tagalog and I would respond in English for the most part. It was a challenging experience,” he shares.

Doing the serye, says Archuleta, opened his eyes to an entirely new way of expressing himself, and is something that he intends to pursue even further after he has served his time as a missionary for the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

“I do lay myself bare to an audience when I sing, but it’s in a different way. Acting and singing are very similar in that way where you become very vulnerable and you open yourself up and express an emotion,” he explains. “I’m not the best actor out there. But I can’t wait to keep growing. It’s so much fun and a lot of work. I think that if I keep on working on it I can get better, because it’s just a great thing to share with people.”

PREPARING FOR MISSIONARY LIFE

More than just opening up new avenues for artistic expression, Archuleta says that his months-long stay in the country has prepared him for the rigors of missionary life. A rigid set of rules are in place for Mormon missionaries, who are encouraged to limit their phone communication with their family, dress conservatively at all times, and stay away from television, movies, the Internet, and most secular music.

“The fact that I’ll be going on a mission, it’s nice that I’m here, in a way. It’s taught me a lot about myself as a person as well. I started to get more out of my comfort zone. This is the most difficult thing that I’ve done and it was great to take on the challenge,” he shares.

Fans also shouldn’t worry about him disappearing from the scene while he fulfils his obligations to his church. While here, Archuleta says he has written and recorded songs that he hopes will fill the space that he is going to leave behind.

“I’ll be gone for two years, and I don’t want to leave my fans with nothing. I just feel like it would be so disrespectful after all they’ve done to support me,” he says. “I want to make sure that the songs will be there. Even though I’m not here physically for my career, I still want to have the music there.”

His two year absence may cast a long shadow of uncertainty on his artistic career, but Archuleta says it something that he is ready to face.

“This is a decision that took a couple of years to make and finally make happen. Even though it’s scary, I know that it’ll be worth it. I’ve learned to trust that feeling in my life. I just have to keep following that feeling,” he declares.

“Nung nagkukuwentuhan kami, wala lang… parang nung una, sobrang light lang ng kuwentuhan. [We would talk, at 1st, just light exchanges] ‘How are you, have you slept well?’ Ganun [Things like that] …

“‘Tapos biglang napunta sa family… ‘tapos alam mo yung ganun siyang klase ng tao.[Then the talk would shift to his family.. he is that kind of a person]

“Natanong ko siya about his mission, kasi kung narinig ninyo yung tungkol sa mission niya, so natanong ko siya.” [I asked him about his mission]

“Sabi niya pa… Lalo na yung mga sisters niya, na may isa daw na sister niya na magsi-sixteen, ‘tapos yung isa, parang magdyu-junior high, sabi niya, ‘I wish I could be there with them when that happens.’ [Esp my sisters. One of them will just turn 16 and another is about to ente junior high]

“Sabi ko, ‘Oh, my God!’

“Naiiyak na talaga ako habang sinasabi niya yun kasi siya mismo, teary-eyed din.” [I got choked up with what he was sharing and even he was teary-eyed]

Dagdag pa ni Eula, “Alam mo yung ang lalim ng pagkatao niya, ang dami niyang iniisip… yung pamilya niya. [You know,when you consider the depth of his character... he has a lot on his mind, but most of all his family]

“‘Tapos sabi niya, may last month pa daw siya bago siya mag-mission, gusto daw sana niya i-spend sa Philippines kasi sobrang napamahal na siya. [He still has a month to go on his mission. If given a choice, he wanted to spend it here in the Philippines because he has grown to love this place]

“Sabi ko, ‘Yeah, of course! We would be happy.’

“Sabi ko nga sa kanya, ‘TV5 would love that you can do guestings in other shows.’

“‘Tapos sabi niya, ‘I’d love to but I just want to spend it with my family in Utah.’”

“Sobra, sobra!” bulalas niya. [I will terribly miss David]

“‘Tapos nung nag-Batangas kami, nung first night in Batangas, sabi niya… ayun na naman, iyon na naman yung nakakaiyak, kasi namumula na yung mata niya. [Then during our trip in Batangas, on our 1st night there... he started to get sentimental again cos he started getting teary-eyed again]

“Sabi niya, ‘I’m gonna miss this, guys.’

“‘We’ve been like taping every day, we’re filming every day and we’re together every day, we’ve been together lunch break and dinner break and all that.’

“‘Tapos sabi niya, ‘I’m gonna miss this because I know you guys have other projects to do after this…’ and eventually daw mada-divert namin yung attention namin.

“Sabi niya, ‘But me, I’m just gonna miss this and I hope I can see you guys again.’

David Archuleta’s Nandito Ako: The Big Deal on this Mini Serye

TV5′s newest mini serye Nandito Ako premiered this week with a bang. The show which stars American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta and the network’s primetime princesses Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Eula Caballero was a worldwide trending topic last Monday. The show’s title and related keywords also trended every single day during its pilot week! Looks like TV5 has created a new record. With this buzz the show has created, things seem to be turning out well for the Kapatid network as a primetime player. Will it be able to sustain the momentum? That we have to find out in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, in case you missed the first week of airing, read on for some random stuff on the characters and try to catch up on the story through our synopsis.

David Archuleta as Josh Bradley
Josh Bradley is an international singer with Filipino-American roots. Due to a hotel fire when he was six, Josh got separated from his mother Cara and was brought to the US by his American uncle. Through a Philippine concert tour years later, Josh is bound to meet the girl who once tried to save his life and find out about the truth that his mother is still alive.

Jasmine Curtis-Smith as Anya Dionisio
Anya Dionisio is the daughter of Teresa, a GRO. Her father was an American who died in a hotel fire. It was during this tragic fire incident that the young Anya first encountered same-aged Josh whom she tried to save from falling off a building. Both were saved by the rescuers and are about to meet again years after.

Eula Caballero as Holly Posadas
Aside from being pretty and popular in school, Holly Posadas also comes from a rich family. She always aims to please her mother but often fails to reach her high expectations. She and Anya eventually became friends after a rough start. Based on the preview, a love triangle is looming as they will both fall for the same guy.

Gelli De Belen as Teresa Dionisio
Teresa Dionisio was a GRO at Clark Air Base when she bore a child to an American. She and her daughter Anya were supposed to go to the United States until a tragic hotel fire killed Anya’s father.

G Toengi as Cara Aguilar Bradley
Cara Bradley is Josh’s mother who fought for her child’s custody but got separated from him because of a hotel fire. Josh was made to believe his mother Cara died from the tragedy.

Aiko Melendez as Margareth Posadas
Margareth Posadas is the snobbish and inconsiderate mother of Holly. Holly always falls short in her attempts to win Margareth’s love and affection.

SYNOPSIS

Led to believe that his mother Cara died in a hotel fire, Filipino-American Josh Bradley had no choice but to move to the United States when he was just six years old. He later on became an international singer and this career allowed him to return to the Philippines for a concert tour. He will soon discover the truth about his mother’s survival and cross paths again with Anya, the girl who once tried to save his life during that fateful fire incident.

If there is one thing that David earned during his not-so-brief stay in Manila, it is his new level of maturity. This is evident in his interviews, in the changes he has been making over his career choices and very much recently, his take of Nandito Ako, performed with his idols, Regine Velasquez & Ogie Alcasid, popularly referred to as Mr. & Mrs. A.

Look at his confidence! The tentativeness has ebbed giving way to him claiming the spotlight that is rightfully his, yet still remained generous to his hosts. Regine & Ogie on the other hand were gracious hosts, letting their guest shine. There was no upstaging anyone. Just three uber-talented artists with a healthy dose of self respect and sensitivity creating harmonies for us to savor.

I didn’t expect to get an upclose footage cos we were only holding patron seats. Then the batteries of the cameras I usually borrow from Naree or Lorma both gave in.

When Regine was halfway through her Whitney Houston tribute, it suddenly hit me that this would be the highlight of the concert. And since all of the advertised guests had performed, David would be next – that is if David would be appearing!

So I went down the stairs, 1st planning to seat on the stairs to get a closer view. But I noticed that people were just freely walking along the sidelines of the VIP section. So I thought, “Why not?!” So I gingerly made my way along the sidelines. Lo and behold, Ogie started talking about a certain song. I knew then that David was in the house!

Audience Reaction

As soon as David appeared on the horizon, my chest literally felt the crowds’ rumbling rising to a level that was not there earlier in the concert. Cameras started flashing everywhere with his surprise appearance. The heightened energy was so palpable I could almost taste it. And it was flavored with excitement and adulation.

Suddenly everyone around me was scrambling – which should explain why my footage was jittery in a major way in most parts. (But at least I got an upclose view, right?) Add to that my new-found fear: I was literally & actually trembling while video-taping!

You see, this wasn’t a DA affair. The crowd was not your usual cra-zeh, spazzing Archie-lot. So I was wary of the crowd’s reaction, especially since David’s appearance was never announced nor confirmed.

But I should not have doubted. The audience loved him! The look on Regine’s & Ogie’s faces when they were singing with David was priceless. There was fondness. There was respect. Mutually star-strucked parties.

And let me add this: it is such a thrill and honor to hear David Archuleta sing a Tagalog song. I have always dreamed of it but never thought it would actually happen. During DALIM 1, it was one of my questions during the M&G – whether he would entertain singing a Tagalog-penned composition. But it was such a short M&G (5 minutes – actually just a See & Bye kind of thing) so it was never asked publicly.

To hear him, see him, sing in my language… Watch him caress every word, modulate on the right syllable, be emphatic on certain phrases – delivering the lines like it was from his gut, from his very soul…

am gobsmacked & OMGGGGAKLSDJ>LKJDASKLDJALSDKJALSDJKASJDALSDJLASDALKSDJALSKD. Know what I mean?

Thank you David, Regine & Ogie for a fantastic rendition of Nandito Ako. I could not be more proud as an Archie.

It was short and sweet. But he was still, OH. SO. FINE. And he finished signing all CDs, even those that came beyond the one-hour schedule. And take note, it was a school night. It was raining cats & dogs. And there was barely enough time to promote this event. I was personally surprised that that much people was able to come.

PYROPALOOZA PERFORMANCE

Wondering how we got so close to the stage? Try doing a stake out at least 7 hours before the start of the event! Yup, I was there at 2pm for a show that would start at 8pm, where David was scheduled to appear at 9! LOL

You think that’s crazy? Naree was there at 11am sitting through several fastfood eateries! By lunchtime, she was joined by @ascphil & family. Meanwhile, I had domestic chores to complete (yah know, cook, clean, etc..) before I could join Naree at 2pm. A group of fans from Archuleta Philippines was also there already, making posters.

As soon as I arrived, Naree & I started mapping out the venue and choosing where we would “pitch our tent” We had VIP tix, courtesy of @ascphil who is an SM executive but Naree & I chose to stay at the Gold area (no seats), directly facing the stage where David would perform. Earlier, one of the organizers was telling Naree that the tix we had offered the best view of the (pyro) show and so we should stay in the inner area of the venue and choose our seats. But Naree said

But this is the show for us – pointing to the stage, away from the VIP section (me-chuckling)

Let me tell you, I really felt bad for the other performers and even for the PyroPalooza show cos it was obvious that the people were there to see David. I mean the other acts were good, too believe me. But the fans were just stoked for only one performer that night! Well, he didn’t disappoint as you can see in the vids below.

He entertained the crowd by singing Ogie Alcasid’s “Nandito Ako,” the title song for the miniseries he’ll be starring in; Southborder’s “Wherever You Are”; and an original song called “Something ‘Bout Love.” Before the show, Female Network had a one-on-one interview with David, in which he shared the memorable moments of his stay in the Philippines, what he looked for in a girl, and what acting made him realize about himself.

5 MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES FROM THE PHILIPPINES

1. Getting to know his Filipino fans.

“The people here are very emotional,” David told us.

“The culture here is similar to the Latin culture,” he added. “So I felt like I could really connect with that.” David has had Latin culture handed down from both sides of his family—his mother is from the Honduras, while his father is of Spanish-Basque descent. David grew up watching telenovelas, which are a huge part of Latin culture.

2. His acting experience.

“At first I thought, ‘Well, this is crazy,’” David said of his reaction to TV 5’s offer to star in the miniseries Nandito Ako. Before this, he only had small parts in American shows like iCarly and Hannah Montana.

David decided to challenge himself by accepting the offer. He said, “It was just one of those things [where you] follow your heart. Your heart says you need to do something, and it’s like you don’t understand why.” And he doesn’t regret his decision. “We had so much fun,” David said. “We didn’t want the series to end. We wanted to keep filming.”

3. Bonding with his teleserye family.

David shared that he really bonded with the Nandito Ako cast. “It felt like a family, and that’s why it was sad for it to end.” When asked about his leading ladies, he said, “Eula and Jasmine were both great to work with. They’re both young, and they’re both fairly new to acting as well—they both started last year, I think—so it was nice to have someone who could understand where I was coming from.”

4. The food.

Though David said he generally enjoyed the food he got to try in the Philippines, one thing in particular stood out: “The mangoes—they’re just so good!”

5. Connecting with fans through music.

When asked what it was like to sing “Nandito Ako,” David said that even though the song was in a language that was foreign to him, he still managed to connect with it. He studied the meaning of the lyrics, but more than that, he really tried to understand the spirit of the song. David explained that music in itself evoked meaning that could break and transcend language barriers. “Classical songs don’t have words, but they’re still so emotional,” he said. “It’s the same with any other song. Even though the language may not have been the one I’m familiar with and know, you can still feel what it’s about. You can feel the energy in the song and the emotion that’s in it.”

During his short stay in the Philippines, he was able to record five songs for an OPM album. David said, “What I love about it is that it’s a way to connect with the fans here and thank them for everything that they’ve done [to support me].”

5 THINGS DAVID ARCHULETA LOOKS
FOR IN A GIRL

1. No fakes allowed!

When it comes to matters of the heart, David isn’t looking for fakers or pretenders. “I look for someone who’s real,” David said, “someone who’s genuine.”

2. Confidence.

David said that he does not expect perfection, but instead prefers someone comfortable with who she is. “Someone who makes an effort to be the best that they can be,” he told us. “Not someone has to be perfect or anything, but someone who doesn’t put themselves down too much.”

3. A generous spirit.

David also talked about the importance of understanding and compassion for other people, and this is definitely a quality he’d look for in his ideal girl. “They know they’re not perfect, but they still give their best to other people. For some reason, when people do that, they become more understanding, and they become more loving, and I think that’s important to have.”

4. Care for your appearance.

We asked David what physical characteristics he was attracted to, and he replied that he prioritizes the effort a woman takes to make herself look good rather than her looks in themselves. David said, “It’s important for [people to] take care of themselves ’cause I think how they take care of the way they look symbolizes how they treat themselves as a person.”

5. A clean rather than flashy look.

A wardrobe full of designer labels and glitzy outfits won’t help you work your way into David’s heart. “They don’t have to be wearing the nicest clothes,” David said. “They just have to be modest and take care of how they look. I like a clean look, nothing too flashy or promiscuous.”

3 LESSONS DAVID LEARNED FROM
HIS ACTING EXPERIENCE

1. Opening up.

David learned how to wear his heart on his sleeve. “I just learned how to be more open,” he explained. “I learned how to not hold myself back.”

2. Battling fears.

“I was always and I still am very self conscious, and I’ll be just like, ‘Oh, I don’t wanna. If I do this, what [will] people think of me?” Through acting, David learned how to placate those fears.

3. It’s just emotions.

David told us that the heavy drama scenes of Nandito Ako really presented a challenge. He said, “I had to learn how to not be afraid to go that to that extreme of emotions. Normally, I would hold myself back.” But, David said, he learned “to go for it, and jump into those emotions and into that scene.”

After the Grand Fans’ Day, David went straight to the taping rehearsal of Talentadong Pinoy. In one take each, he completed performing the 1st ever official public performance of “Nandito Ako” and Where Ever You Are – two songs that will form part of the Nandito Ako’s OST. Am sure we are giddy with anticipation to get our hands of OST tracks, right?

David Archuleta says doing ‘Nandito Ako’ was life-changing experience

He might as well be called a Pinoy idol. After 15 days of continuous shooting for TV5′s much-awaited mini-serye, “Nandito Ako,” international singing star David Archuleta faced media members one last time on Saturday evening before he finally left the country early Sunday morning to go to Singapore for another engagement, and back to the US to prepare for his two-year missionary work.

Despite fatigue and sore throat setting in as a result of his hectic schedule that included finishing his scenes for the mini-serye, TV guestings, and a grand fans day on Friday night, the 21-year-old singer showed that he was a pro and a really nice guy by saying yes to a request to sing the mini-serye’s theme song, “Nandito Ako”.

In his striking crooning that was once described by New York times as a “lovely, foggy R&B voice,” David impressed the audience with his heartfelt rendition of “Nandito Ako,” prompting a group of writers to comment that David seems to have imbibed the romantic song’s lyrics.

In an interview, Joanne Banaga, one of the mini-serye’s supervising producers, said David had a grueling itinerary that involved taping on weekdays and doing promotions on weekends. Yet through it all, “He wasn’t difficult to work it. You call him at this hour or you tell him not to wrap up yet, and even if he’s sleepy, he just sings or jogs to wake himself up. The only challenge that came up while working with him is that you invest in an emotion and you get to like him. He’s like a son to you. You get attached to him. Sobra. He’s so humble that he’s not comfortable when you try to praise him.

“And ‘good’ is not okay with him. He wants to give his best all the time.”

At the press conference held at the Meralco Fitness Center in Ortigas where David was presented along with the other cast members of the TV drama series, he admitted that he’s going to miss working with his fellow actors especially since they’ve become closer to each other. Asked whether he’s developed something more than just friendship with either Jasmine Curtis-Smith or Eula Caballero, his co-actors in the series, David replied: “I’m always being asked about that! It was really fun working with Jasmine and Eula. They’re both just really great actresses and great girls. It’s just been so great and everyone’s been supportive. I don’t want it to stop.”

In the beginning, however, when the TV5 project was first presented to him, David confessed his reluctance to come to the Philippines and accept the acting project. “When the offer first came, I was a bit reluctant because I didn’t know what the experience would be like – to be away from home to do a series, which is something that I’ve never done before. I really had my concerns and my doubts.

“But what really made it great was that I started to get out of my comfort zone, including trying more food and being more adventurous. Everyone was supportive and the TV5 management was just so easy to work with. (The experience) has made me more mature. This isn’t something that I would normally do but I was willing to take on the challenge. I just had time enough before I go on with missionary work for a couple of years. It’s been exciting and it just taught me a lot about myself as a person. It’s so weird because I didn’t expect that at all.”

On his fifth visit and his longest stay in the country, David fulfilled his wish to ride a jeepney again and to visit a local market. David was also spotted backstage at the recent Annebisyosa concert of Jasmine’s sister, Anne Curtis. David dropped by, accompanied by some TV5 crew, halfway through the concert mainly to show support for Jasmine who was a guest in the concert.

Jasmine said she invited David to Anne’s show but had advised him beforehand: “She’s not really a singer.”

But the American Idol Season 7 Finalist said that, all the same, he enjoyed the concert. “It was really fun but what I really respected about Anne was the message she was showing to people, to follow your dreams. She was open about not being a great singer out there but she still sang, ‘You know, I can do this, as long as I’m willing to work hard and do my best, and so can you.’ I really appreciate the message that she’s trying to bring and she’s encouraging more people to do the same thing.”

Now that he’s completed his work for “Nandito Ako,” David expressed his openness to exploring an acting career. “This has been one of the best experiences in my life. I’m not a great actor and this is something new to me. But I hope to continue because this is something that I would love to work on and enjoy. It’s such a great thing to share with people.”

It was hard to not cry your eyes out for that. It was so emotional and David lives every word of that song every day. It was beautiful! He … answered questions… he already knows where he is going on his Mission but wants to keep in a bit private for now but he said he knows it … will impact him when he is there and when he gets home as well.
