Finally! The most anticipated day in Archuland for the year 2013 is upon us

Some hours ago, for a number of countries, iTunes began its delivery of No Matter How Far, generating an online squee-fest from David Archuleta’s dedicated fans. Some US fans went around the metropolis buying the physical CDs – although for sure these same peeps pre-ordered the album, LOL. Such are the ways of true-blue Archies.

Will Charting Matter?

As of 3pm (Manila time), NMHF album sits at #16 in the Pop iTunes Charts. Marketing budget may not be a-plenty but this is not bad for an album whose artist is in absentia – at least for the next 12 more months…

It may also be good to note that NMHF arrives exactly a year after the Forevermore album was launched. Sure makes it easy for the fanbase to remember the numerous milestones in David’s young career.

Yes, I choked and bawled after reading it. Who wouldn’t? Here you are amazed at the extent of planning he made for his 2-year sabbatical from showbiz. Then, you feel blessed knowing that you are not alone, literally counting the days of his return. Plus you terribly miss him. Then KAPOW! You read that last line. WhatTHE???!!!

I have no words enough to express my… I don’t even have a word for it. All I know is I am filled with raw emotions for this guy who has blanketed my virtual alternate life with so much warmth and joy, much more than I feel I deserve. (Note: I’ll Never Go is playing in the background as I write these paragraphs, REALLY!!!!)

David Archuleta album preview – Finally, a quick announcement for all David fans out there: if you want to preview his entire new album “No Matter How Far,” you can do so over on Billboard. We’ll have some more in-depth coverage of the disc soon, but for now we just have to applaud everyone close to the season 7 alum for finding more and more ways to keep him in the spotlight, even though he is currently going still on a Mormon mission in Latin America.

Interesting bit in Bilboard’s feature is the fancase’s contribution to the realization of this album -

Before leaving, Archuleta recorded a number of songs that were never placed on an official album — some unfinished demos, others hard-to-find cuts that had only been shared on international releases. Thanks to his dedicated fanbase, many of these tracks were shared online, catching the eye of the label Entertainment One, who decided to compile them into a proper album: “No Matter How Far.”

LISTEN TO THE SNIPPETS HERE

From the time the track listing of David’s 6th studio album had been released, fan reaction has been like a pendulum on a swing – from the expected spazz-like kind to downright disappointment – the latter being a surprise.

The spazzfest that ensued is par for the course, I suppose. I mean we are a spazz-infested fandom, aren’t we? LOL. But it is taking me a while to comprehend the disappointment I have been getting from some fans.

Is the disenchantment coming from the album having just one bonafide new song? After Forevermore and BEGIN., do we realistically expect to have a spanking new album with all fresh tracks?

Considering that our guy was recording till the eve of his departure for BEGIN., when do we realistically expect him to work on some more fresh tracks?

Let’s slice & dice the track listing, shall we?
1 New – HFA
1 New but previously leaked – DRA
4 Bonus track from TOSOD Asian Ed – EAM, LDH, NM & Wait
1 Bonus track from TOSOD JPN & UK Ed – NEBTD
3 OPM album – Tell Me, ING & Forevermore

Given that 80% of the album are tracks not released in the US, am taking this 6th studio album of David as (1) a way to reach out, specifically to US listeners – fans & non-fans alike, and (2) to keep his presence even in a small way in the music world.

Am I begrudging my disappointed co-Archies? No. Am just sad that they feel that way. My hope is that they are just a minority.

Now that the snippets of the new song has been released, can we expect the disenchanted to turn around or be turned off?

Will the album or any of its tracks have any bit of chance to make waves in the US? That is a very nice notion. Realistic? Probably not, given the state of the music industry that David left behind. But you never know…

For me, anything released by Team Archuleta during his supposed sabbatical is icing on the cake. And grateful for them.

But then again, to release NMHF through Entertainment One Music – “the #1 Independent Music Brand in North America” is a good sign that David intends to follow through with his promise to return to music.

It would be interesting to see in two years time, what David will find when he makes his comeback. More important is what David will bring in. Will the twain ever meet?

BREAKING NEWS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP!

American Idol runner up and pop sensation David Archuleta is set to release his new studio album “No Matter How Far” on March 26, 2013.

David is currently serving a two-year mission in South America for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “No Matter How Far” features a mix of new recorded material and previously unreleased U.S. tracks. The first single, “Don’t Run Away”, produced by British music producers The Nexus (David Sneddon and James Bauer-Mein), will be serviced to the AC Radio format in February.

David reached second place on the seventh season (2008) hit show American Idol as one of the youngest to perform on the show at age 16. He released his self-titled debut album the following year. Both the album and its lead single “Crush” peaked at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and the Billboard Hot 100 charts, respectively. “Crush” went on to sell over 2 million downloads. David has since released the albums “Christmas From The Heart”, “The Other Side of Down”, and the covers album “BEGIN.”. He was the featured vocalist on the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs’ “Glad Christmas Tidings” album and PBS Special in 2011, and released “Forevermore” an album of Filipino standards in the Philippines in 2012.

“No Matter How Far” will be released on Entertainment One.

Recently, Carly Rose Sonenclar, one of the front runners of X-Factor USA took a jab at Lennon’s “Imagine”.

She had been performing splendidly over the course of the show. At 13, the youngest front runner in recent reality TV talent shows, she had been called “alien”, a prodigy, gifted, etc… Terms once heaped on David once upon an Idol time.

So comparisons if not trepidation are invitable. OMG Yahoo didn’t mince words –

“X Factor’s” Carly Rose Sonenclar will have a great career, but she might want to pick up some pointers from David Archuleta. Last night, she took a risk by performing John Lennon’s hit, “Imagine.” Unfortunately, her cover paled in comparison to David’s performance from “American Idol” season 7.

Here’s a look at why his cover of “Imagine” was superior to hers:
1. David knew when to hit the glory notes and when to hold back….
2. David’s performance was simple, while Carly’s performance was “fussy.”…
3. The song was more true to David’s artistic style….

What can I say? It’s when you opt to “showboat” rather than tell a story, that’s when you lose the essence and significance of a masterpiece.

Even without comparing the two performances, even if I had not experienced David’s “Imagine”, I would not have liked Carly’s rendition – and am a Carly fan at that!

Fussy, contrived, BAAAAAAD arrangement and concept. Belting out on the wrong points. No judicious use of stylizing. Where was the restraint? Where was the respect for lyrics? For the melody? For the story? It was a sorry mess.

Sad.

And I blame it all on the coaches. There were certain actuations – which to my eyes were scripted – that were totally misplaced and cringe-worthy artificial.

Carly is such a natural talent and I am sad that at this stage, the Hollywood sheen is already doing a patina on her. Just look at her audition piece –

Wasn’t THAT priceless? And just after few months on X-factor and THAT priceless talent is being eaten up already? That’s why am sad. Sad, sad, sad.

The downside of popular stars acting as coaches to newbies? They are not actually qualified to coach. Sure some of them may have made it big in the industry. Sure they know the business. But to actually handle vocal talent?

The other bad thing with these singing contests? They make belting out the be-all and end-all of a performance – even when unnecessary & totally inept. Just because you can do it, that doesn’t mean you have to do it.

Haven’t we heard it all before: Less is more? Especially with a musical masterpiece such as Imagine. AGAIN: judicious use of stylizing, please!

What David does, so much better than most current young singers out there, is draw his audience into the song, forcing them to react instead of just listen. When a singer can put a smile on your lips, a tear in your eye, tug at your heart and stir your soul all at the same time…that is pure talent! Just like Carly Rose during her audition.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Carly Rose. I believe she has a bright future ahead of her. But if Carly’s Imagine is the example of X-factor’s coaching style, am sorry. That’s not the way to cultivate natural talent.

If they really care about these aspiring talents, stop messing with natural talents like Carly Rose! It would be a shame if Carly loses her natural sparkle out to the Hollywood klieglights, even before her time to shine is given its full chance.

Take a page from David, peeps. Just keep it real. For once.

So this REALLY completes our chronicling of David’s CASBAA adventure. What’s good about Cam #2 footage?

Well, it was the camera across the stage, providing the front shots of the mini-concert package. It also captured the audience’s audio reaction and the standing ovation at the end of his performance which we didn’t see from the broadcasted version.

This was a different kind of audience – made up of media moguls, businessmen, high government officials – not your regular cra-zeh Archie concert lot. Yet, the reaction was the same (well, with less screaming that is, LOL).

David just floors you with his talent. Just look at @craigleeson

No need for gimmicks. No lavish production numbers. Just The Archuletor and his voice, gloriously soaring and gripping you in his velvety smooth, once-in-a-lifetime timbre. Unadulterated Archuleta.

August to December 2008 may probably be considered the CRUSHING PERIOD as David did tons of interviews and guestings to promote his smash hit single CRUSH and his highly successful debut album, David Archuleta.

Coming at the heels of his spectacular showing at Idol and a 50-country-wide tour with the AIS7 To Ten Finalists, David’s media blitzkrieg and the response to the same is quite impressive. The public’s emotional vesting was clearly there an David delivered with gusto.

With such mileage, is it any wonder that his debut single and self-titled album achieved so much success? The momentum was there and David’s management smartly built on it. And we are just talking of 2008 here!

What would a budding artist be without the support of radio? So for his debut album, David made the rounds of major radio stations across the country.

Whether by personal appearance or phone-in interviews, the DJs got the shock of their lives (and a mighty fine education) of what TheArchuletor is. Finally they saw for themselves what millions of people saw on TV — that David was really as good as he gets on and off-screen.
