TV5 Mini Series Confirmed

American Idol star David Archuleta is scheduled to arrive in Manila on Jan. 13 to do a primetime series for TV5 with homegrown Kapatid stars Jasmin Curtis Smith and Eula Caballero. According to InterAksyon: American Idol star David Archuleta is scheduled to arrive in Manila on January 13 to do a primetime series for TV5. In an official announcement posted on its website, the broadcasting network said Archuleta will “do a primetime series with homegrown Kapatid stars Jasmin Curtis Smith and Eula Caballero.” Archuleta, who turned 21 just last December 28, has been one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters in America since placing second in the 2008 running of ‘American Idol’, the hugely […]

Gilbert’s Constitution Week USA Concert

Nearly two weeks ago, I left the chilly early autumn and traveled to Phoenix to see David perform at the suburb’s annual Constitution Week USA (formerly known as Gilbert Constitution Week). Phoenix is always otherworldly to me. I have visited the neighboring suburb of Tempe multiple times, but because I did not grow up in Phoenix, its architecture all looks the same and the seemingly endless suburban landscape makes me feel miniscule. Although I am well-traveled in other countries, I remain rather poorly traveled in the Southwestern American states. I looked forward to again visiting Phoenix, even if only for a very short time. My previous concert travel to Myrtle Beach in […]

An Evening of Joy

When my local concert buddies first invited me to fly to Myrtle Beach to attend David’s concert this past Saturday, my initial reaction was that flying to a concert seemed like a very extravagant thing to do. I reasoned that I could stay home, write, read, putter in the garden, and just watch the videos online. Luckily, my friends’ sense of fun and even reason prevailed, and I booked a flight to Myrtle Beach.  As soon as I boarded the flight, I knew I had made the right decision. It is always great fun to unabashedly discuss David’s music with fellow fans. By now, many readers have watched videos from the concert […]

The Best of 2010!

The 3rd Annual Archie Awards The Voting is done, the winners are selected. But really, there are no losers in this list of performances, photos (no, not one loser there!), tweets, quotes, songs and fan tributes. For many of us, the whole point of the Archie Awards is the fun of going through the prior year’s videos and having an excuse to look over those 5 or 7 photos of David just one more time to be sure we are really picking the hawtest. Yeah, right. But vote you did, and so here are your favorites of 2010. Best Live Performance – Rockin the House With 42% of the votes: David Archuleta performs Elevator at […]

Parachutes and Airplanes

The roller coaster ride that is TOSOD continues when you listen to the 7th cut of this album, “Parachutes & Airplanes”. I’d say it is well placed in the CD setlist, coming after “Falling Stars”. Nicknamed “PANDA” by the arch angels, it is probably the 2nd track that the fan base is most familiar with (aside from the used-to-be-carrier single “Something ‘Bout Love”), given that David debuted this song during the BYU-ID Rexburg Concert sometime in June 2010 along with “If I Could Only Be” and “You’re Not a Very Good Liar”. PANDA received mixed reviews back then but it was my favourite among the three songs. PANDA […]

Complain

OK, I am the first one to admit it. Asking me to review one of David Archuletaʼs songs from the new CD is like asking the chocoholic “which piece of the Godiva assortment would you like?” Duh… Sure LIFE is like a box of chocolates and you donʼt always know what you are going to get but we are not talking about life here. We are talking about the music that comes out of the person we have all known and loved for the last few years. We know he does no wrong…musically.  Well, at least in my book. So read this with that in mind. I am a crazy fan […]

Falling Stars

Upon first listen, I was impressed by Falling Stars. The pop, rock, and alternative songs that precede it surround his voice with instrumentation and don’t allow him to evoke that intimacy we know David is unmatched in conveying. For the first time on The Other Side of Down, we hear that unique, pure timbre in his voice, simultaneously sharp and round, as he sings the first verse. Although David’s strength is with the ballad and evoking pathos, this was not a standout for me on the album. On an album that has as one of its strengths that it reflects David thoughts through its lyrics, this song does not succeed in […]

Something ‘Bout David – Redux

The only adviser David will ever need is his own ear. I don’t know whether this song will hit or not, no one does; it doesn’t matter. It very well could, and it should, but it doesn’t matter. With this frothy, jumpy, deceptively edgy single, David proves his seriousness as a pop craftsman, in range of best-of-breed targets from Abba to Michael Jackson. And I’m not even talking about the performance. David has gone meta. Despite the overly glossy producer polish, inevitably aggravating those of us who hunger for The Voice (autotune? really?), this feels like more of a David Archuleta production than we’ve had so far in this category. It is […]

Nothin’s Gonna Break David’s Stride

David Archuleta’s new album, The Other Side of Down, has been released on iTunes, following a slightly early shipment of the Fan Edition from the official DavidArchuleta.com site. Fans have waited for months, watching David’s tweets about where he was, who he was writing with, and how excited he was that the album would show his “quirky, dorky” side. We’ve waited with a combination of anxiety and excitement that is unique to a group of dedicated fans. Questions that we asked ourselves were, “Will the reviewers like it?” “Will some of the songs get some good radio play?”  “Will he have a hit single?” and of course, “Will Jive promote […]

Things Are Gonna Get Better

When I read the name of the song David would be singing for the MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon, it triggered a little hitch in my heart. The name, “Things Are Gonna Get Better,” reflects what I consider David’s foundation attitude and belief about life, his optimistic outlook and glass-half-full view of the world. And I was hoping for a song that would truly highlight all that David is as a singer…a vocal master, a pop soloist, a soulful artist and a balladeer. Was I hoping for too much? Apparently not! “Things Are Gonna Get Better” seems to be able to support all the myriad vocal persona’s that combine so beautifully to give […]
