HG #450 I think I read somewhere (probably here!) that David agreed to do this last year, so it might have been one of his last “promises to fulfill” that weren’t covered under his contract.
You know, SF, I think it was too. And I don’t think they deserved it!
If I were David’s manager, I’d break it down so he understood what his worth was so that he could start learning to be more discriminatory with his public engagements.
I love that, as a public figure, he’s so accessible to his fans. However, he needs a different attitude when negotiating when and where he is to perform.
LittleMushroom on January 2, 2009 at 11:50 pm
silverfox -- I completely agree with your opinion about Jeff being out of camera range, for all the reasons you mentioned. Its happened several times since the end of idol, even at some major televised appearances, and it shouldn’t. Again, for the valid reasons you stated, nothing more or less.

HG444/446- I don’t know if I agree with you entirely about the big time little venue stuff. I know it was a little bit of a different time then, but it was not the Bronze Age….but back in the 80’s I saw Springsteen at the Meadowlands Arena and The Stone Pony several times each during the same month! The Stone Pony is a a local bar (not unlike Northern Lights in set up) and Springsteen’s favorite place in Asbury Park. It was crazy, when he was home he’d play at the bar, why?… he loved it….he loved us…..we loved him…..it was all about the music and his love of the whole scene…. and no cazy security was needed, (although you want to be moshed?) and singing and dancing yes- screaming no!… “you want to play, you got to pay” he used to say, you had to sweat to participate…can you imagine- I’d scalp a ticket for tons of $ and then go see him for a cover charge… not his of course, you’d have to get the inside info that he was going to show up when his local friends were playing… sometimes the info was wrong, but mostly we were rewarded beyond measure….. he did that for years…. didn’t hurt him any š
(do I sound nostalgic?)
silverfox on January 2, 2009 at 11:50 pm
HG..this feels good..having a discussion with you again without you sayin’ “til next time” hahaha!
Do you think maybe David still doesn’t GET that he is a STAR and is on the cusp of SUPERSTARDOM?
Marlie 7, that’s an interesting tidbit. It’s so David to fulfill such a promise (still don’t think they deserved it).
Anyway, I’m getting ready to sign off.
G’nite all! (Hi, refnaf! Happy new year!)

Joner on January 2, 2009 at 11:54 pm
I think the cancelled “thank you” concert in Utah after Idol was over may also have impacted their decision for David to perform on NYE. I think they feel they really let Utah down when the concert didn’t pan out. This may be their way of giving a little something back.

hG, happy, djb, ninaf, kizzi etc. i want to meet up again… waaahhhaawwwaaaa
SF, I just read your post (and so glad I didn’t sign off “till next time”).
Happy, my criticism may seem harsh, I know (considering how much I enjoyed David’s Northern Lights concert). And even then, you will remember that I still questioned, as much as I (and David) loved that little venue, whether or not David overextended himself. As much as I was fortunate to have gone to that show, I did believe it was one performance he could have done without on his very busy Jingle Ball schedule.
For me, I think it was the fact that it was a New Year’s Eve gig. If it were any other night during the holiday season, I would not complain. But such a major holiday, I think, called for a much bigger event with more exposure.
Great that David was having fun and that the local Archies in Utah enjoyed him. But, he’s still making a name for himself beyond AI. My issue is that if David were going to do a public performance on that night, it should have been in a national setting built for maximum exposure.
He’s got a second single to promote for heaven’s sake! A new season of AI is getting ready to start. How easy it will be to forget last season’s idol contestants (apart from us die-hard fans). This is what I mean about his management. If he wanted to grace the party with a song, cool, especially in the context of partying with friends. But, this was billed (from what I understand) as an actual performance. If David was going to perform on NYE, the event should have been worth his time and should have been big enough for him. That’s all I’m saying.
silverfox on January 3, 2009 at 12:08 am
Yeah, it’s time for me too, to say good night all! and for David..
Dear Lord, Though we are unworthy to ask, Please take Care Of David. Watch over him, Protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his ARCHANGELS do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his wellbeing. Give him rest when heās weary. Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms. Keep David healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. This, though we may be unworthy, humbly pray, Amen.
Sweet dreams! Be safe & secure in our love always! Take care. You will always be numero uno in our eyes! Thank you for all you do and for just being you! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!
Sorry guys! I’m just insanely busy with family stuff. Wish I had more time to hang out more. In another week, I definitely will!

HG465- please note “don’t know if I agree with you entirely”.. because I knew I’d agree with you once we started chatting š …. it would have been better if he were unannounced… that way the two songs and the venue would have been appropriate, as a billed event 2 songs is somewhat of a betrayal of the trust… (oh no, tomatoes flying)
Freofan on January 3, 2009 at 12:12 am
I have a feeling that the NYE gig was on the books for awhile. I don’t like saying this, but I think that Cook was nationally televised on a show (the FOX NYW show, no less) on NYE simply because he won AI.
I think that if David would have won, he would have gotten a nationally televised NYE gig. I think it is contractual with AI and Fox.
I think that we may see David do a high-profile NYE show next year, once he’s had a chance to tour, other singles do well, and hopefully win a Grammar for Best New Artist (I hope--wouldn’t that be amazing!)
I agree with Joner that there may have been other factors, too, like the previous concert being cancelled and he wanted to make up for it somehow.
That songwriter interview is **excellent**. Has Rascal seen it yet? I bet he is going to love it! I think it is amazing how all the people we’ve heard from who have worked with David just rave about it.
Freofan on January 3, 2009 at 12:14 am
Speaker of interviews, I think I may have made contact again with a member of a famous early ’80s band. I definitely want to do a freelance article for a music mag about him. He has an amazing life story to tell that will surprise many people. Will share more details if/when I can.

“For me, I think it was the fact that it was a New Yearās Eve gig. If it were any other night during the holiday season, I would not complain. But such a major holiday, I think, called for a much bigger event with more exposure”.
That I DO agree with.. but I understood his wanting to be with family & friends..even if it wasn’t a sound business decision. And why I don’t think there will be any more compromises such as this, if that’s what is was.
Freofan on January 3, 2009 at 12:16 am
Whoops--I hope he wins a Grammy, not a Grammar! I’m sure you know what I meant, though. š
Freofan on January 3, 2009 at 12:19 am
Actually, I totally take back what I said: I just remembered that someone asked David a few weeks ago about NYE and he actually said that he did not know what he was doing, that he thought he had the night off. I clearly remember reading that. So it leads me to think that he performed at it because he was in the area, his family/friends could be there, and Cook contractually had the national spot with the FOX show.

HG- actually, the more I think about it… to cultivate and develop a reputation as one of the greatest of the greats you must be sure to never betray whatever level of trust has been built between you and the audience… those bar days didn’t detract from the magic, they cemented it….. the problem with the NYE event was that it just wasn’t worthy of the artistic trust on many levels (sorry David- everyone stumbles) and in the age of youtube everyone sees everything…. which brings me back to my post of 419

I just read parts I and II of the interview. Cannot wait until Rascal reads it. My reaction to the interview?
This is one of the best and most informative interviews I have read regarding David’s artistry, ideas, and songwriting process.
When I think of all those interviews with “Have you kissed yet? Do you have a girlfriend?” I feel like I know so many random facts about him but also very little about him.
Now, THIS is an interview that left me with a better understanding of David.

Re the NYE gig — but wasn’t it very much like David? What works for him?
Yes New Year is such a big high profile event. Yet he chose a local, familial setting to celebrate it. Among his own community, the hearth where he grew up. With his family. A big thank you from the soul man from Utah, perhaps?
Had he been elsewhere, the whole family may not be able to join. And I think that is a big factor in the decision process, considering the occasion.
I agree, it was gratis. Probably to compensate for the cancelled charity concert just before the AI Tour.
I think David knows that this may well be the last NY that he will be spending with his community, cos the following years may very well set him for big things he may never have imagined before. But he sees things happening now. From here on, his Management may not even entertain similar events for David cos we all know where he is headed.
That’s what I think it was. Am just happy he was happy at that time. Plenty of opportunities to go big quite soon š
Have to step out and spend some time with friends. Enjoy the rest of your night/day!
davidfanLIZ on January 3, 2009 at 12:58 am
I am delighted that we have NO pictures of David at Christmas or on his birthday. At last a bit of peace, and time alone with family and friends. I see the NYE gig as a simple extension of that. A hometown gig where he could celebrate with those closest to him. Was it the best career move? Of course not. Did he work for him. Yup!
davidfanLIZ on January 3, 2009 at 12:59 am
correction: Did it work for him?
tawna21 on January 3, 2009 at 1:18 am
Happy #419 & 476--I totally agree w/you. David shouldn’t be expected to fill MSG sized venues all by himself (not right now). There are plenty of just-right-sized venues everywhere that would be perfect. Let him eat the elephant one small bite at a time.
rsf--I would love to hear him sing “Unchained Melody” or “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” or “Ebb Tide” (Righteous Bros.--1960-ish). They also did a quick little number, “Little Latin LupeLu”. Yeah, I lived thru that era.
BTW--am I the only Picses out there? I’d love to know the sight where you’re getting the astrological sign descriptions from. I want to read all about me.
mamasaun on January 3, 2009 at 1:25 am
Hi All -- checking in late. From my understanding and all the local stuff I read and heard, the concert with rockapella and the osmonds was scheduled a year ago. David made a “cameo” appearance by request of the Osmonds. I don’t think David was scheduled that far back. (IDKFS) When they announced him they said he wanted to thank Utah and “give back’ a little. It almost seemed last minute . . just something for him to do for his Utah fans while he is at home with his family and friends. I asked papasaun what he thought of Jeff being on stage while David was singing . . we both noticed it during the songs, but we felt like the atmosphere was so casual that he didn’t seem out of place at all. There were a lot of people on and off the stage during the whole set. It was definitely not very professional, I doubt he did it for money, and I think -- completely my opinion -- that he made the decision to do it all by himself -- just because he’s a nice guy. He gave it his all, seemed to be having a blast with his family and friends -- and we lucky Utah people felt like we had just celebrated NYE with our David. š What a wonderful gift (bad sound system and all)

Life Pursuit: To avoid feeling alone and instead feel connected to others and the world at large

Pisces Secret Desire: To live their dreams and turn fantasies into realities.

Checking in to second what Mamasaun said. Also, from where I was standing I could see David backstage before he came on and he was HAPPPPYYYY. Everything about him that night was just HAPPY. He was bouyant and relaxed and eager to sing. Personally, it felt like a little miracle to me. Nothing that small and sweet will likely happen again, and I was standing smushed against the barricade, fifteen feet away from David. Pretty dang sure he was singing just to me most the time he was on my side of that stage. Didn’t you think that Mama? From where you were sitting? It was just for me, wasn’t it? (haha!!)
Here’s a weird thing. I was supposed to be LOOKING for Jeff -- because he was expecting to see me with my little gift. And there he was, onstage, pretty much right in front of me AND I DID NOT SEE HIM. Not at all! I had eyes only for David. I figured I had just a few minutes to see him singing live, so close to me. A situation that is not likely to repeated in just that way for me ever again. I was not going to waste it by letting my attention wander. And I completely missed Jeff altogether! Alas.
vermeer on January 3, 2009 at 2:03 am
“I must go to retire…” I can’t talk anymore. LIZ, “if we’re talking about David, then I have no will at all.” That’s sooo funny. Ok, g’nite for real this time.

Now that he is an old man of 18, I think David is going to have to shed some of his (don’thate me) “boyish charm” in order to have the media focus on his extraordinary talent. So much has been written and talked about in terms of David’s adorable personality and heart throb good looks. John Lennon said “A pretty face will last a year or two, but pretty soon they’ll see what you can do.” With the exception of Elvis, most top selling singers did not look like movie stars. The public could focus entirely on their singing talent, and so could the artist.
David is David. He happens to be extremely handsome and have the most engaging personality anyone has ever witnessed. But, he wants to be taken seriously as an artist, and for that to happen, his singing must be what people think of when they think of him. When you think of Elton John or Billy Joel, don’t you immediately think of their talent? Their appearance or personality is never spoken of when describing them. It’s all about their music. Ultimately, that is what I think will have to happen with David if he is to reach the dizzying heights that he is certainly capable of achieving.
Now, how do we get David to look like Kate Smith?
genesis on January 3, 2009 at 2:38 am
De-lurking for a minute. Spent the last few hours catching up with all of the fascinating dialogue going on here. I often feel like I am eavesdropping or visiting an on-line soap opera. Anyway, I often find myself nodding my head in agreement with much of what is said here about David.
I have to laugh at myself. I actually forced myself to walk into Wal-Mart and buy another one of David’s CDs so I could have my very own copy of WFM. I have just got to hear that song at least once a day. Don’t ask me why. I just do. David’s magnetism is so mysterious.
Back into lurk-dom.
BTW, another Aquarian in the fold. (Feb 5)

Popping back in because when I went to check my email, this image popped up. Is this the in vogue pose for 2009? (:hope the link works:)
Bliss#509 Yeah, still up, I’m pathetic. I know what you mean, in a way. He will shed some of the randomness and boyish charm as time goes on. If he had less talent, then his looks might keep him from being taken seriously. But The Voice can not be denied. It will transcend everything else, even if what else he is, happens to be drop dead gorgeous.
Bluebarsa on January 3, 2009 at 6:27 am
Bliss #509. You mentioned Kate Smith! Her rendition of God Bless American is one of the best. It was a NYC fixture for years. I remember watching her afternoon TV show after school. My Mom loved her. Remember the Liberace show, too, around the same time? Ahhhhhhhhhh, early TV. LIZ #487, mama #490. I agree with you both that New Year’s Eve was David’s time with his family, and his appearance was, in a way, a “thank you” to his hometown. He did look tremendously happy!!

#509bliss: I have often thought about the impact of physical appearance and personality facets for Davidās career since his talent is a given. There are many who have formed opinions and donāt look or hear with an open mind or heart because of his age alone is fraught with a ton of preconceived notions; personality and looks is certainly a part of it but I donāt think his physical attributes are detraction. He isnāt classically handsome if you look with an artistās eye feature by feature; rather, has a ruggedness and a uniqueness, coupled with his personality that has a true synergistic effect.
I think it is a two edge sword. Certainly appearance and the public persona have to be unique and also in the realm of what are attractive to music listeners & purchasers. Looks are an absolute must to attract the tween/teen audience. I think one of the reasons that has been discussed here as to why he didnāt win AI was because he was different, like no one before him. One of the reasons why he has a diverse fan base is because he is different. There has been posted on the net the release of ALTNOY with comments program directors from various radio stations where David has interviewed and the comments glow with genuine praise for him as a person and his music.
Good looks and boyish charm aside, I do think of him, first and foremost, as a musician, a singer the likes of which I have never witnessed before.
I am thinking the public needs to adapt to him, his personality, his humility, his brand of charm as he evolves as a musician and matures in the human experience.
jackryan4DA on January 3, 2009 at 9:33 am
Good AM everyone! Are you ready for PART 2 of AMY’s interview with Mike Komprass? Here you go!
PART TWO
I wish we could hear them now!
Yeah, I wish I could let people hear them ācause theyāre really, really cool. They are really cool. But I think that would have to be, that would be — we did shop them and we sent them to the record company. We sent them to other artists that have records coming out. I think you can turn it into that Bleeding Love thing where if it doesnāt work for one artist it will work for someone else and David would still have writing credits on it.
Did David sing the demo?
Yeah, he did sing the demo and we also did alternate versions, too. We did female versions of them and then for Zero Gravity, we had a R&B singing company do an alternate version that is kind of like — it is really like a Chris Brownish kind of song. And itās kind of dancey. We do have other singers do alternate versions of it for certain pitches, you know, if we want to go for Chris Brown we need someone to [can’t decipher] that. Or if we want to go for Leona Lewis we need someone who sounds, you know, female.
Can you tell me more about Zero Gravity and Fighting For You?
[Zero Gravity] kind of a dancey track. Itās cool. I donāt know, maybe you could bug David and his dad for a copy of it. Falling For You is very much likeā¦. I actually just finished a new version of it. A new version with new programming and stuff. I really love it. I think that song is awesome. You have the co-writers on it, Steve Diamond and Guy Roche. We all love it. We all think itās a hit.
I wish we could hear them! Yeah. One day Iāll play it for you. We just canāt put it posted or anything. I know, record companies would not be happy, I don’t think.
I wanted to tell you, too, the production credits for — nobody knows for Somebody Out There. I produced that but it was also co-produced by Steve Diamond and a guy named Greg Pagani.
Would you work with David again?
Oh, for sure. I hope, I hope he calls for me to work with him. Yeah, I try to keep in touch with him through text. We send each other texts back and forth sometimes.
Does David come up with the falsetto bits on his own or are those suggested in production?
Oh, definitely on Somebody Out There. Heās the one who came up with the little break in the chorus. Definitely, yeah, I mean, thatās his voice and how he sings. Yeah, I would say thatās David. For sure.
Jeff mentioned to us in Atlanta that the writers of Somebody Out There were really good about bringing it back to David. I guess that would be you?
That would be us, yeah. It was definitely a collaborative effort. The guitar part was the first part to be played and David started singing and it was like, you know, what you hear is pretty much what kind of came out of what he sang. It kind of, you know, I have the rough tapes of it and itās pretty much the same song with just no words really — just the melody and him humming the melody. And both those songs kind of did the same thing. But, yeah, it was obviously collaborative.
When you co-write, like when a song — when you go into a room with the intention of writing with people, then it is collaborative. If he sits at home and writes it by himself and takes it to somebody, heās writing it. Itās like we want to write a song together, we want a great song for David that works for him and that he can be proud of and that he loves, but that he is very much a part of. Weāre not just writing a song and giving it to him and saying āHey, sing our song.” Heās equally involved in it.
Did David use an instrument or just his voice? No, he just kind of had a pen and paper and his singing.
He says he’s not very good on guitar. Have you seen him play?
And he actually called me from his video shoot and he was like, “Can you tell me the chords for A Little Too Not Over You?” and he was playing it over the phone for me. Yeah, he can play. He plays piano great and he plays guitar. He is very talented.
I think it would be really cool to see him get up and bust out a guitar to play Somebody Out There. I think that would be way cool if he did that actually.
I bet if it was ever made an album track or a single, I bet you he would do that. Iām sure he would at some point. Just like he does with the piano for Crush.
How involved was Jeff in the process?
Those sessions, he was there. He goes everywhere, like with those sessions he would always come by and would always listen — he is very much involved. I think he likes to make sure that David is getting what he wants ācause David doesnāt always, you know — heās very quiet. So he doesnāt always say it and I think Jeff is really great at knowing how to communicate what David wants and I think thatās really important. So, yeah, he was definitely, definitely at the sessions. He came for the vocals of A Little Too Not Over You when we did the adlibs and the bridge. He was there for that. When we actually wrote it, he left the room for āA Little Too Not Over You.ā When we actually wrote it, he had to go meet with Davidās A&R person. So he wasnāt around for most of that. But he came in and out, like he was there for the start of it and then he left and went and had a meeting with the A&R person and came back. Somebody Out There, he was in the studio but he wasnāt in the room exactly when we were writing it, but heād come in. Heād come in and see the progress and he definitely. So, yeah, to answer your question, yes, heās there.
Did David ever say if he didn’t like something?
Sometimes heāll say that and sometimes heāll feel it out of it. Fortunately for the case of those two songs he happened to like them and they happened to be recorded and one happened to be a single and Iām very happy about that.
What do you do if you think something sucks?
Well, sometimes you just say it sucks. I mean, hopefully everyone is cool enough — nine times out of ten, everybody is cool enough where you can just go, āAre you kidding me? That sucks.” Just joking around. Or you can just be like, “Well, how about this instead?” But those sessions went, they kind of went really quickly and there wasnāt a lot of disagreements. It was just like, āWow. Okay, I like that. I like that. Okay, letās do this.ā It flowed, the chemistry was really good.
Would you say David was good to work with?
Oh, very. Heās one of the best. He is really, really cool. Heās the real deal. A lot of people donāt know this, but heās for real. Heās very talented. Heās very musical. He knows his crap, you know.
Can you give me an example of something he did that show off his realness?
Um, I mean. I donāt even know how to answer that. Heās just for real. Heās just, you know, he can sit down and he can write a song on his own. I think that he has to be more confident overall when he is writing with people, but that is only going to come with doing it more. But I mean, heās a pro for real.
Do you think David will write more of his second album?
Well, unfortunately with the music business, I think itās always going to have to be — like if you look at the best artist, thereās always hit writers that cowrite with them. All of them. I think that heāll write a lot. Iām sure that heāll write songs on his own. But part of itās fun, too. Part of it is really fun to write with other people. So I think the record company will always push for hit writers to be a part of it, but there will probably be a happy medium.
I mean, the way the writers look at things is if you cowrote it then youāre a writer. Nobody really picks apart, “Oh, did this person write that or did this person?” Itās like you write it, then you wrote it. Iām a cowriter, but I wrote it. And if David is a cowriter, then he wrote it.
Do you like all the songs you write, or are there some that you just hate?
I think everybody has their song that they write and they go, āUgh, what was I thinking?ā Or because it comes from inside sometimes things donāt always work out. You have bad songs and you have good songs. You have to have a bad song to have a good song. But yeah, you kind of have an emotional attachment. Even if youāre doing it for a living itās still comes from some place. Even if youāre writing for an artist, it still comes from somewhere. So, yeah, it is always some kind of attachment. You know, Iām totally guilty for it. I go on and look at all of the fansites to see how all of the songs are doing.
So you visit fansites?
Oh, for sure. You want to know how itās doing. And Davidās dad called to tell me that they were switching Touch My Hand for A Little Too Not Over You and I was completely excited.
I was so excited! Oh, yeah. When it happened he called me from the Carrie Underwood show and I guess David was backstage there and was like, āSo, they are gonna make your song a single.ā And Iām like, āOh, thatās great. So after Touch My Hand?ā And heās likem āNo, theyāre canceling the video for Touch My Hand. They are canceling the video for Touch My Hand and your single is going to be the next single.ā And I was like, āNo way.ā I thought he was kidding at first. I e-mailed the record company a couple of times and I wanted to confirm it and we had to wait a week to confirm it. Then it started to become real when they shot the video and it was like, āOK, cool.ā
Did you think the video fit with the song well?
I think so. I think they did a great job.
Yeah, oh yeah, the mix. The video mix is like the radio mix. Itās the same thing.
Someone wanted me to ask if he snacks a lot in the studio. Does he snack a lot? No, I donāt think so. I think I snacked way more than him. Well, it depends, sometimes weāre in the studio and there is always sodas or Cokes somewhere and some places you order food in if youāre recording. Writing sessions are pretty quick. I think we went out to dinner. We went out to an Italian place when we were writing A Little Too Not Over You.
Did you get any inspiration from the Italian restaurant?
The song was written by then. I think we went out after the fact.
What’s your favorite song you’ve worked on?
Thatās a good question. I donāt have one, though. I have different ones for different reasons. Obviously A Little Too Not Over You is one of my favorite songs that Iāve written right now. Iām really proud of it and I hope itās going to do really well.
So that and Somebody Out there, Iām really proud of those. Every time you write a new song ā well, if you donāt hate it — then it can be your favorite.
Yeah, itās like the new bike. Or the new toy. When you get a new one, itās like, āOh, yeah. I really love that one.ā Or when the new single comes out, you always like the new single. Well, not always, but you know what I mean.
Do you think it’ll fare well?
I think it will. You never know how people are going to respond to it but so far, so good.
Would you say David’s a natural songwriter, or does he have to work at it?
He definitely is a natural songwriter, but even being natural songwriter, you always have to work at it. You know what I mean? Like youāve just always got to be better and there [are] so many things that make a great songwriter. Having great melodies, great lyrics, being able to write it in a perspective that people can relate to and not be to cryptic. I think that what makes a great song is that it can be played simply, you can play it on a piano or on an acoustic guitar and it will come across the same as if it was fully produced. [If] you can just sit in a room and play it and people like it, then thatās a good song to me.
Can you say “David is greater than all boy bands”? It’s a Snarky tradition!
Oh, gosh, I donāt know. I have to work on some boy band stuff. I have to be careful.
Well, you know, everyone is trying to write for the Backstreet Boys now ’cause thatās like the new Jive pitch and I think they have a new record coming out.
So would you say that David is greater than or equal to all boy bands?
Oh, yeah. Heās by far a superior singer than most boy bands.
Yeah, he is. Heās a real singer. Heās a really great singer. Some boy band singers are really great. I mean, Justin Timberlake is really great. And then there are some boy band singers who arenāt so great.
But Davidās on a whole different level than a lot of singers.
No one denies that David’s a great singer, but he doesn’t really get credit for being an artist.
I think in time it will come across. Like to me David is an artist. If you get to meet him and you know him and you know how much he loves music, then you know — heās a walking jukebox. He knows every song by everyone and he loves music. Heās a music lover.
Do you have any final words? Yeah, here, make Somebody Out There a huge hit. Just promote it. I think people will like it if itās pushed.
Many thanks to AMY of Snarkies for this wonderful and substantial interview, Woo-hoo!!!!

Thanks jackryan4DA, that interview is EPIC. Would love to get my claws into all the stuff about SOT, but alas I must head out and work on my next paper.
Btw, this is a record for # of comments, right? Yay us!!

OMG HAPPY & JULIEBUG! Your avis are slaying me as I type this. LMAO.
Just remember to open your eyes, you hear? Andrew Lloyd Webber would be so proud -- ahahahahahaha!

bliss509- speak for yourself! š and perish the thought! please don’t try to convince our Adonis that he should morph himself into Paul Simon in order to be taken seriously (btw- I love Paul Simon.) I loathe that thought of the day the David may have lost his hair, grown a paunchy belly, and yellowed his teeth. Oh no! bring on the smexy, the Brando, the Dean, the Elvis, the black leather, the scarves, the tight jeans, the rolled up sleeves, the crisp, white, shirt against the ebony hair and the green eyes…. (sorry Joner- leave the stripes sweaters home) oh no Bliss, I predict you will garner much dissension on this topic!
happy on January 3, 2009 at 9:48 am
btw bliss- my old mother has a not-so-secret fantasy that he will develop himself into a Latin lover ala Julio Inglesias (not Enrique). She makes me and her grandchildren ROFL when she says, with a whimsical smile, “he belongs on a chair with a linen shirt opened, and a little sweaty, singing Latin love songs with a Spanish guitar…”
(I guess I didn’t fall far from the tree.)

happy #521 -- my older brother is a big Julio fan too, and on NYE, I was talking about David (every chance I had) and now he wants to know more about him! Guess what he will be getting for his birthday in Feb.??? I guess that means I have to shop at WalMart again, but for David, I’ll do it. We’ll have another fan!
BTW, I’m a Leopard and my brother is 11 years older than I am, but he is not very computer savy -- but I’m going to change that too -- he needs to get on You Tube!!!!

I was up late last night doing research in Archieology and fell into bed exhausted and dreamed of David. Go figure, but it doesn’t happen very often. David was at his house and for some reason another woman and I were to make sure he got to the airport in time. The other woman was a family friend who knew us both. So he’s getting ready to go and I’m being very maternal, asking him if he has this or that and I call him “sweetie.” I say ” You don’t mind if I call you sweetie or honey or baby, do you? It’s a southern thing.” He looks right at me as I say this and says, “No, I don’t mind.” and smiles. Then I say, “I guess they don’t do that in Utah.” He laughs and says, “No they don’t.” Then we walk out to the cars. For some reason we are taking 3 cars, the other woman in the lead, then David, and then me in the rear of the convoy to the airport. So David says he wonders if his cat is OK, he hasn’t seen her for awhile. I tell him to call her and maybe she’ll come. I start to go “Here kitty, kitty”, but before I do I see David purse his lips and then he starts to whistle this staccato beat. It’s like his special call for cats. I’m behind him and when I hear it my knees give way and luckily I manage to grab the rear of the car to hold on to till I get steady again. I guess he didn’t know I was one of his cats too! (jaguar) So anyway he gets into this really old beat up Ford and tries to start it but it won’t start and I start to pray, please God, don’t let it start so he’ll have to ride with me. I just wanted to spend more time with him, honest. Although, I am not responsible for my motivations in dreams. haha. Anyway, the Ford POS started. Dang.
Freofan on January 3, 2009 at 11:35 am
In your dream, “So anyway he gets into this really old beat up Ford and tries to start it but it wonāt start and I start to pray, please God, donāt let it start so heāll have to ride with me.”
I laughed so hard! I could definitely see myself doing something like that in real life!

vermeer on January 3, 2009 at 11:49 am
juliebug, your avatar cracks me up. I can’t take you seriously if you talked seriously about something. LOL.
Bliss #509, I saw your comment last night but was too tired to respond. No hating you for saying David should lose his boyish charm, but I am in disagreement about that being a road block to his potentially reaching dizzying heights in acceptance as a true musician. I know you are talking about his future fans, not his diehard fans, but I imagine what I feel couldn’t be that different from any ordinary person out there. It is not possible for me to separate David’s music/artistry from his personality/character because I feel his personality, his heart, his good nature, his humanity and yes, his boyish charm as far as that adorable persona, all of that seeps into and through his art and that’s what I hear and react to. His physical good looks? How much of that objectively affects the degree to which I love his music is a bit harder for me to know, truthfully. Again, I can’t separate that from his talent either. I can listen to him with my eyes closed and perhaps the intensity of my reaction can be greater? I don’t know. I’ll just say, he is SO DOGGONE CUTE AND HANDSOME, I don’t WANT to close my eyes!!! Hahaha! So to your point about Elton John or Billy Joel, their appearance or personality is never spoken of when describing them because precisely, there is nothing there to speak about! Sorry EJ and BJ fans. David’s good looks and amazing personality are the extras that many don’t have on top of their talent and that’s what is going to make him into a mega star in my opinion. He is truly unique.
silverfox on January 3, 2009 at 11:55 am
Angelica..I FEEL FOR YOU!! Some dreams are so easy to interpret..how about..you just wanted to be ALONE with David! hahaha! Don’t we ALL ( for more than 30-45 seconds, that is)?
Betsy..I know! But I don’t think David is going to morph into a “pretty MAN” ( Elvis was pretty), I think David will get RUGGEDLY handome and beautiful. Un-buh-lee-vuh-blee gorgeous. Especially on the big screen as in MOVIE STAR..if Elvis did it, so will David.

silverfox on January 3, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Morning, Kizzi!
Angelica..can I ask..what did David’s “cat-call” sound like? Besides the staccato beat, I mean. Was it like the whistling on YOUR EYES DON”T LIE?? A-ha!
joymus on January 3, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Juliebug -- your avi is CRACKING ME UP! Vermeer -- love your avi as well. I agree TOTALLY with your assessment of David’s good looks. I can listen to his music with eyes closed and his voice is as beautiful as his physical looks and his beautiful personality. Its extra added value as an artist and boy oh boy -- what extras they are. I was looking at some vids of the 2004 Australian Idol finalist -- Anthony Callea. He also has a beautiful voice and is very handsome but that’s where it stops. I know nothing of his personality yet in a short span of time David’s detractors, more than anything are bowled over by this aspect of his total package.
Angelica, #526, “I was up late last night doing research in Archieology” ROTFLMAO!
Juliebug & Happy, LOVE your avis! Kizzi, top o’ the afternoon!
Happy, re Bruce Springsteen, I thought I read once that even when he became a huge superstar, The Boss insisted on playing only certain size venues so that he could maintain that connection with his audience (staying away from huge arenas). Is that true, do you know?
Gotta go back and reread Amy’s interview … again (and not just because Mike’s from T.O.). The very beginning of SOT did remind me of another song when I first heard it, but I couldn’t place it. But, heck, how old was David when More Than Words came out, two? Yikes.
happy on January 3, 2009 at 12:39 pm
TOfan537- definitely not, he’s played everywhere… even to 70,000 on a hilltop beside Slane Castle north of Dublin and London’s Wembley Stadium (also about 70,000) in ’85.
silverfox on January 3, 2009 at 12:44 pm
This was posted at FOD. It’s the song Zero Gravity that was one of the songs co written by David, but not approved for the album. WHAT WAS JIVE THINKING OF?
Vermeer 529 -- I totally agree with your post. David just has it all and I don’t want him to change anything. I love men who have a “boyish charm” about them . . even if they’re 40.
vermeer on January 3, 2009 at 1:17 pm
mamasaun, “boyish charm” in his 40’s with rugged looks. Gah…
vermeer on January 3, 2009 at 1:20 pm
SF or anyone, can you tell me how a song co-written by David ends up sung by someone else? How does that work? Jive just gives it to another person?? I’m completely ignorant about this music business stuff.
Iamblisskasden on January 3, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Regarding my last post, nobody wants David to achieve his maximum potential more thanI do, and he should not have to compromise an iota of his great looks and personality to do so. I’ve said many times that he is a force of naure and a complete original, just as he is. I was kind of thinking out loud about what it will take, in the real and painfully superficial world of Show Biz for David to avoid the dismissing stereotype of a teen idol. It just seems that, historically, the artists who have had the greatest success were the ones whose music was the absolute centerpeice of their public persona.
Having said all that, David will continue to be handsome, continue to be wonderful, and continue to be “himself”, His true fans will always love him and his music, and I am at the top of that list, along with everyone here.
Lovin’ all the discussions here today… you all make the David journey very enjoyable indeed!!!
hi HG… and BTW, I join Betsy and SB… Taurus yeah!!
HG #450 I think I read somewhere (probably here!) that David agreed to do this last year, so it might have been one of his last “promises to fulfill” that weren’t covered under his contract.
I also think the appearance was gratis..
You know, SF, I think it was too. And I don’t think they deserved it!
If I were David’s manager, I’d break it down so he understood what his worth was so that he could start learning to be more discriminatory with his public engagements.
I love that, as a public figure, he’s so accessible to his fans. However, he needs a different attitude when negotiating when and where he is to perform.
silverfox -- I completely agree with your opinion about Jeff being out of camera range, for all the reasons you mentioned.
HG450- just read this post and I must agree ….. the crowd MUST be reverential….that’s part of the trust…. if it’s going to be real- it’s got to be real….. we were authentic in our love for each other (the Boss and his fans)
I think the cancelled “thank you” concert in Utah after Idol was over may also have impacted their decision for David to perform on NYE. I think they feel they really let Utah down when the concert didn’t pan out. This may be their way of giving a little something back.
HG-Goodnight. I miss you. sniff, sniff
i agree joner… it’s part of giving back
hG, happy, djb, ninaf, kizzi etc. i want to meet up again… waaahhhaawwwaaaa
refnaf- can you come to manhattan for Jan 20?
Yeah, it’s time for me too, to say good night all! and for David..
Dear Lord, Though we are unworthy to ask,
Please take Care Of David.
This, though we may be unworthy, humbly pray,
Amen.
Sweet dreams! Be safe & secure in our love always! Take care. You will always be numero uno in our eyes! Thank you for all you do and for just being you!
CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR!
G’nite again! š
Speaker of interviews, I think I may have made contact again with a member of a famous early ’80s band. I definitely want to do a freelance article for a music mag about him. He has an amazing life story to tell that will surprise many people. Will share more details if/when I can.
eeeeeeeeeee happy I’ll be in Spain with hubby… whats’ happenin’ on the 20th?
night HG, night SF amen
HG…you said…
“For me, I think it was the fact that it was a New Yearās Eve gig.
Whoops--I hope he wins a Grammy, not a Grammar! I’m sure you know what I meant, though. š
Actually, I totally take back what I said: I just remembered that someone asked David a few weeks ago about NYE and he actually said that he did not know what he was doing, that he thought he had the night off. I clearly remember reading that. So it leads me to think that he performed at it because he was in the area, his family/friends could be there, and Cook contractually had the national spot with the FOX show.
refnaf…the 20th is the Presidential Inauguration!
Good nite! for sure now!
HG- actually, the more I think about it… to cultivate and develop a reputation as one of the greatest of the greats you must be sure to never betray whatever level of trust has been built between you and the audience… those bar days didn’t detract from the magic, they cemented it….. the problem with the NYE event was that it just wasn’t worthy of the artistic trust on many levels (sorry David- everyone stumbles) and in the age of youtube everyone sees everything…. which brings me back to my post of 419
aaahhhh night SF
true happy
If he will be in NYC on Jan. 12, in DC on Jan. 20 and ALTNOY is released on Jan. 9 (I think?), perhaps we will see some national promo on the TV shows and such again soon?
Off to bed — good night everyone!
refnaf- check your email
Freofan, I think ALTNOY is scheduled for Jan 6 release on iTunes.
Now, THIS is an interview that left me with a better understanding of David.
got it happy… thanks
Freo … soooo agree, David the artist is what I want to know more about.
SF466- Amen.
good night all. Thanks for the fun.
Yup!
correction: Did it work for him?
He gave it his all, seemed to be having a blast with his family and friends -- and we lucky Utah people felt like we had just celebrated NYE with our David. š What a wonderful gift (bad sound system and all)
I can’t even spell Pisces right. There, I did it!!
tawna21 -- seems like us Pisces are pretty outnumbered here!
Traditional Pisces Traits
Imaginative and sensitive
Compassionate and kind
Selfless and unworldly
Intuitive and sympathetic
On the dark side….
Escapist and idealistic
Secretive and vague
Weak-willed and easily led
I’m okay with almost everything except the weak-willed thing. That doesn’t work for me.
hahaha davidfanLIZ, you beat me to it! tawna21, I’m a Pisces too. LIZ, I agree, weak-willed sounds weak.
Thanks Liz-- Dang! That’s a pretty accurate description of me. I can be weak-willed, but most of the time I fight thru it.
Tawna
Easily-led? I don’t think so!!!
tawna21, I’m weak-willed when it comes to David. I should be going to bed but I can’t stop sometimes checking up on all things David. So ok, it’s accurate. I’m weak-willed too, sometimes, lol.
Oh well…. if we’re talking about David, then I have no will at all LOL! I am completely caught in his gravitational field!
LIZ, admit it, easily-led by David! Just teasin’
I must go to retire early tonight. G’nite all and fellow Pisceans (is that a word?).
I found this on Pisces--
Your ruling planets: Neptune
Life Pursuit: To avoid feeling alone and instead feel connected to others and the world at large
Vibration: Erratic Energy levels
Pisces Secret Desire: To live their dreams and turn fantasies into realities.
**I think it’s really weird how it really does describe me. My dream? To meet David. And I live to turn it into a reality.
Alas.
“I must go to retire…” I can’t talk anymore. LIZ, “if we’re talking about David, then I have no will at all.” That’s sooo funny. Ok, g’nite for real this time.
tawna21 #500 (you hit the magic 500!)
I like that description, especially the part about connection. I hope that you get your dream of meeting David!!
Also wanted to add -- #487 LIz -- I agree completely. He has precious little time to himself. I am so glad that he got a bit of it, at long last, after his busy year.
smanda #501 -- Nice to see you on. And yes -- he was absolutely singing to you . . in fact . . at one point, he ran clear across the stage to get back to you . . did you see that? lol What funnnnnnnn to have been there -- professional or not -- David was at his finest! And HAPPY the whole time. What a JOY!
Good night all. Sweet dreams.
Mama -- I did see that! I am so relieved that you did, too. Now I don’t feel quite as delusional.
night!
Now that he is an old man of 18, I think David is going to have to shed some of his (don’thate me) “boyish charm”
in order to have the media focus on his extraordinary talent. So much has been written and talked about in terms of David’s adorable personality and heart throb good looks. John Lennon said “A pretty face will last a year or two, but pretty soon they’ll see what you can do.”
With the exception of Elvis, most top selling singers did not look like movie stars.
(:hope the link works:)
http://www.gowindowslive.com/mobilepoptrivia/?ocid=EML_HMUI_300_2
Bliss#509 Yeah, still up, I’m pathetic. I know what you mean, in a way. He will shed some of the randomness and boyish charm as time goes on. If he had less talent, then his looks might keep him from being taken seriously. But The Voice can not be denied. It will transcend everything else, even if what else he is, happens to be drop dead gorgeous.
Good morning, all!
I’m just popping in to read before getting started on the RL chores of the day. I started from the bottom & just had to say hi to genesis because we share a birthday … Feb 5.
Listening to my personal favorite -- SOT -- while I read!
Good morning!
Mamasaun, I think you are right about why David did the NYE event.
I am buried in work this weekend. Our term starts up again next week and it’s coming very quickly, and I am re-writing two classes. I’ll check back in for breaks!
#509bliss:
I have often thought about the impact of physical appearance and personality facets for Davidās career since his talent is a given.
(sorry Joner- leave the stripes sweaters home) oh no Bliss, I predict you will garner much dissension on this topic!
btw bliss- my old mother has a not-so-secret fantasy that he will develop himself into a Latin lover ala Julio Inglesias (not Enrique).
Happy -- Which nut tree did you not fall very far from? haha!
juliebug523- haha, good one. ….. either a hazelnut or a coocoonut š
Good morning!
Great interview!
Bliss..Are you kidding me? David is only going to get even BETTER looking as he gets older.
hahaha! Bliss maky a jokey!
happy- I think I told you before..I luv your mama!
Dang.
In your dream, “So anyway he gets into this really old beat up Ford and tries to start it but it wonāt start and I start to pray, please God, donāt let it start so heāll have to ride with me.”
I laughed so hard! I could definitely see myself doing something like that in real life!
SF -- I know he will only get better looking but….are you trying to kill me this morning?!
Who am I kidding? I am dead already!
juliebug, your avatar cracks me up.
SF -- Amen to RUGGED! and top of the mornin” to ya!
angelica- ROFL at that dream. š
“itās like his special call for cats. Iām behind him and when I hear it my knees give way and luckily I manage to grab the rear of the car to hold on to till I get steady again. I guess he didnāt know I was one of his cats too!”… just too funny!!
Angelica, another lucky one to dream about David! Can’t blame ya for wanting him to come closer!
Kizzi -- Amen to your amen. And vermeer, your avatar is just breathtakingly gorgeous! Bliss -- I think we’re just stuck with his incredible beauty and charm, dang it!
Morning, Kizzi!
Angelica..can I ask..what did David’s “cat-call” sound like? Besides the staccato beat, I mean. Was it like the whistling on YOUR EYES DON”T LIE?? A-ha!
Yikes.
TOfan537- definitely not, he’s played everywhere… even to 70,000 on a hilltop beside Slane Castle north of Dublin and London’s Wembley Stadium (also about 70,000) in ’85.
This was posted at FOD. It’s the song Zero Gravity that was one of the songs co written by David, but not approved for the album. WHAT WAS JIVE THINKING OF?

Zero gravity should totally be David’s song!
Vermeer 529 -- I totally agree with your post. David just has it all and I don’t want him to change anything. I love men who have a “boyish charm” about them . . even if they’re 40.
mamasaun, “boyish charm” in his 40’s with rugged looks. Gah…
SF or anyone, can you tell me how a song co-written by David ends up sung by someone else? How does that work? Jive just gives it to another person?? I’m completely ignorant about this music business stuff.
Having said all that, David will continue to be handsome, continue to be wonderful, and continue to be “himself”, His true fans will always love him and his music, and I am
at the top of that list, along with everyone here.
