On April 26th, 2009, David was in Newcastle, UK, as the “warm-up” performer for the band McFly. Just before his trip, many of us were wondering if he would perform Angels, a song that is practically a British Anthem…and if the UK audience would accept this young American singing “their” song. Well, let’s look back and see how that turned out.
One Year Ago Today

Totally spooky. I posted this last night and this morning I pop over to FOD for the morning news and they had posted it yesterday. I absolutely did not see it over there before I posted here. Wonder what that means? LOL
Haha Marlie, I don’t know what that means. Perhaps they were marking the anniversary as well?
This was one of the bolder moves that David made, given the whole national divide, the Revolutionary War, and so on 🙂 But yeah not only that, David did this entirely with just himself and the piano.
I really would love to know what were the “on the ground” reactions of the Brits to David’s take on “their” song. Aside from the screams lol. Like what were people saying? Or tweeting? David’s version is much more rooted in American church musical traditions.
As people know I’ve been on an Eva Cassidy kick lately, and it’s exciting to see David popularizing one of his own reinterpretations. I’m hoping that we’ll get to see David reworking a classic on perhaps one of the tracks of his new album.
Thanks for this Marlie. I loved hearing the enthusiastic (understatement) response of the audience. They of course knew a different, UK version of the song, and were unaccustomed to the bridge and some of the runs that David added. Sometimes their screams covered these parts, but there was no doubt that they love that song and that they were loving David.
What i never gonna understand is why Jive sent him to UK, the results for David were good, people had a great reception to him, clearly he has a potential market there and Jive let him down , why? 😐
