In very short order there has been broad consensus across the fan community that “Somebody Out There” is easily one of the best releases from David’s first major recording effort. It is in my top three. How, then, to account for the fact that one of the most satisfying songs has been subjected to the least amount of distribution? This track is currently unavailable for purchase anywhere. Not on a hard CD, not on a download. Can’t buy it.
In order to have it, you would have had to have pre-ordered the album on iTunes. I have nothing against channel incentives, but when it effectively takes a superior feature of the product out of circulation, it’s not helping anything–except, of course, Jive’s relationship with iTunes. And isn’t that the point? No, my good and loyal Archies, that is most definitely not the point.
There has also been broad consensus that the so-called “bonus” tracks are in general a better representation of David the way his fans appreciate him than the tracks selected for inclusion on the standard CD. Even if I’m not ready to accede to the emerging belief that they are indeed better songs (a couple of them are, including “Somebody Out There”), I do agree that they amount to a superior showcase for David’s voice. And that’s what it’s all about.
David made a point of setting expectations about this album as a hodgepodge of styles, a potpourri of experimentation–a “who am I?” journey. And while I may have observed more range on the standard release than perhaps a number of critics have, it is incontrovertible that had more of the bonus tracks been included, the standard release would have contained significantly more variety. David knew exactly what he was saying. Jive’s decisions only served in the end to undermine his words by releasing as narrow a version of the collection as possible as the standard issue.
In the creative industries and in the media and marketing world, a lot of people think the word “hack” describes someone who can perform work capably, but without any real inspiration or creativity. In other words, servicable but ultimately sub-standard. That’s not quite accurate. A hack is someone who has the ability to do more thoughtful, more creative, or more inspired work but who lacks any real respect for their audience. Consequently they rationalize short-cuts and rote, standard fare as “good enough” because their clueless audience won’t “get” anything more interesting anyway. A hack is a cynic.
I think Jive has been hack in their treatment of David’s album. They apparently think, for example, that because “Somebody Out There” is organic, soulful, authentic and sweet (precisely the nature and character of David’s most heartfelt work) that his current core market of teenage girls won’t “get it;” that they require something between Chris Brown and the Jonas Brothers in order to respond favorably. What Jive is evidently failing to recognize is that David’s core market is both smarter than they are giving them credit for, and entirely responsive to who David already is, not what the Jive marketing machine wants him to be.
lol Rascal -- Somebody Out There…. is clueless! BRAVO! I think the bonus tracks ROCK the House, but we have to support David. This is the CD we have, so I will embrace it in full fangirl style -- there will be a lot of David music yet to come!
I forgot to say that I agree that they do not fully understand his real audience!
Remember “Once,” the little Irish movie that grew? No big money behind it, no big names in it but through word of mouth it caught fire and its key song won an Academy Award.
People respond to authenticity (and art that is overlooked by the power brokers) and I’d love to see something like that happen with “Somebody Out There.”
Tofan, I agree with you, and Rascal also 100%. I could see “Somebody Out There” becoming a fan and critics’ favorite, leading to word of mouth exposure and eventually wider recognition. It is a beautiful, incredible song and I can’t get it out of my head. I even talked about the song and “Falling” today in class just now as I shared examples of songs that have touched us.
Anyone see David perform on Regis and Kelly? David did great and he looked great, too. I like the vibe between Regis and him. Regis has a fatherly, caring interaction with David and you can tell that he genuinely cares for David. I noticed the same type of interaction between them in May when David appeared on the show.
Bravissimo rascal…..Bravissimo. *loud & prolonged applause*
For once, LOL, I have nothing to add.
Jive, Azoff are you listening?
Rascal, you hit the nail on the head. I received my CD from Walmart with the songs and they are great but I have unknown album, unknown artist and only song tracks no titles. What is this? What is Jive doing? I loved your visual on the last post. I adore David and know he would be dismayed by some of the things that are happening. I don’t mind the marketing strategy to sell more CD’s that is business but at least make them all available. I shall see what response I get from Walmart about my functioning but incomplete CD.
I too love the bonus tracks-some more than others. What I like about them is it shows us what is in store for us when David truly has time to write and produce an album the sane way-not this Idol frenzy. This young man is learning a lot very quickly and taking advantage of it all. I love his album (I have more for gifts) but I am even more looking forward to next year-tour and album or albums with more of his influence. Go David!!!
Oh and thanks for the quality mp3. I am directing ppl to this site to download.
This brings my fighter spirit out. I’ve started a thread on IDF to talk about fan strategies to bring attention to the bonus songs, and especially the disappearing (and amazing) track, Somebody Out There, which David co-wrote.

Oh thank you Rascal, thank you. I’m almost tears read that Somebody Out There is so good but i can not get anywhere. BTW i am an international fan and this is my first post.
Hi everyone. What a great site here. Bravo Rascal.

David Archuleta”s:Future Revenge: Grammys Galore?
“Take heart, David Archuleta fans. Just shrug off the ridicule and insults being heaped on your hero by cynical music journalists now that Archuleta’s debut CD is out. You knew it was coming. It doesn’t mean they’re right — or that David Archuleta will not get ultimate revenge.
Music journos tend to be guys with a desperate, inexplicable need to prove their masculinity by trying to assassinate anybody who croons great schmaltz. Remember how they tried to lynch James Blunt just for the audacity of singing “You’re Beautiful” so well — and meaning it? These are the same dudes who have to go into loud gagging fits whenever they hear a Celine Dion song.
Well, Celine has won five Grammys, including best record (“My Heart Will Go On”) and album of the year (“Falling Into You”). Blunt ended up getting five Grammy nominations, including best record and song (“You’re Beautiful”) and new artist of the year. He hasn’t won yet, but he’ll be back. Blunt and Archuleta sing the same kind of fiercely romantic music that earned Grammys in the male pop vocal category for others who’ve taken beatings through the years too: John Mayer, Michael Bolton, Barry Manilow, even Justin Timberlake (at first).
All of those chaps don’t whine in their songs about “me, me, me,” but they enthusiastically sell their adoration for “you, you, you.” As the Vulture blog at New York Magazine points out, 11 of the 12 songs on David Archuleta’s debut CD are addressed to “you.” Smart.
Also, the songs are truly smart, as musical compositions go. “Crush” — the CD’s first single spinoff — is a terrific, well-crafted tune, like other winners on the disc, such as “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Barriers.”
The point is this: David Archuleta’s debut CD proves that he’s got the right song formula plus the perfect vocal chops to sell his broken heart. Even some music journalists think so. Happily, one of them wrote the review of Archuleta’s CD for the music industry trade bible Billboard: “Most teen Disney heroes have got nothing on David Archuleta. The 17-year-old who was one of the most exciting ‘American Idol’ contenders has one of those once-in-a-decade pop voices: A silky tenor with a natural melancholy that makes him a heartbreaker by default. His charming debut exploits that very quality with some strokes of pop genius.”
rascal, gosh it’s sad to think that this one track, Somebody Out There, co-written by David, won’t be heard by so many out there who could stand to benefit a great deal from hearing it as this IS a message song (versus love songs on the standard CD) intended to reach out to anyone who can use a helping hand, a kind heart, in short more love in their life. … sigh… making a difference in someone’s life with his music is David’s desire. “Clueless” may not be a strong enough of a word, really.
vermeer, you are so right about it being a message song.
Kizzi #10, thanks for posting that! LOVE it. And Freo #8, great idea to spread the word — as is your posting of the mp3, Rascal, thank you. Let the buzz begin!
“Somebody Out There” is the epitomy of what David believes and feels in his heart and soul. I love it so much. I think they will definitely regret that they didn’t present it on the CD. Maybe they’ll wise up and bring it out as a single in the near future. “Desperate” is kind of the ‘dark side” of “Somebody Out There”. Leave it to Jive the assume it would do better. I do enjoy seeing the darker deeper side of David in “Desperate”. BUT, I adore who he is in his heart and soul much much more.
Freo I love your proactive spirit. First thing we can ALL do to promote “Somebody Out There,” and other bonus tracks— and lurkers, this is where you can really help, too — is go to the Snarky and FOD Jingle Ball polls to choose what you think David should sing at the Jingle Balls. “Select Somebody Out There” (and any other bonus tracks you love. “Works for Me” is definitely on that list for me. I love “Falling,” too, but not sure it’s a Jingle Ball selection.) It’s been hard for me to choose a Jingle Ball list (up to 5 songs) but I think I’ve got it now (NOT easy for me!):
• Barriers
• My Hands
• Your Eyes Don’t Lie
• Somebody Out There
• Works For Me
I’m half tempted to throw “Let Me Go” in there, but what would I toss?…and … HG… (waggin’ finger) don’t you dare say “My Hands” …lol {{hug}} :p
Rascal Of course I wholeheartedly agree with you. I wish doing so didn’t depress me so deeply, however. I want to enjoy unadulterated JOY for David in this his first outinig. (I’ll get over it.) I thought of something you could do, too, that might help promote those songs: Could you also put up a poll for Jingle Ball list? (I think David and Jeff are paying attention to those — Jeff requested it, after all!) Maybe you could also put up a music player in your right column? You could only put songs you’d like to discuss/promote? Just thinking of ways to help keep those songs UP FRONT.
Kizzi Thank you for that article!!
Can I send Jive the medical bill for the fracture in my skull that comes from banging my head against the wall at their egomanical stupidity?
lovedavid lol… I’m not a fan of over litigiosity (lol… i tink i made that word up) but… perhaps a Class Action Lawsuit is in order.
oh… and can one sue for shaking one’s l’il bootie all the way OFF? (side effect of becoming addicted to “Let Me Go”)
Rascal, I’m behind you and your thoughts 100%!
This situation reminds me of an interview I heard with one of David’s favorites, JASON MRAZ.
He had completed his CD and was asked for some bonus tracks to be used by his label (ahem). He obliged and gave them several to use.
When he was touring overseas (I wanna say Sweden or somewhere like that) he decided to perform a song that had never been on his album. He said it was so strange, because the minute he announced the song, the entire crowd started to draw closer to the stage in excitement and anticipation. And when he started to sing it, he couldn’t believe that they all SANG ALONG! He was stunned.
Turns out, the song had made it’s way onto You Tube and unbeknowns to him, had developed a huge cult following. The fans were absolutely wild about it. He referred to the song as “the little engine that could”.
Oh, BTW, the song was named “I’m Yours” which was finally included on his most recent album and tops the charts.
Moral of the story is, great songs don’t necessarily have to be promoted by a record label to become a huge success. Fans can impact the fate of a song as well.
I’m totally on board this new promotional train. In the name of David, let’s get “Somebody Out There” OUT THERE ourselves!
Yay, Joner! (great little piece’o’research… and a MOTIVATOR! 🙂 )
Some comparisons of debut CDs:
Kelly Clarkson -- “Thankful” Released 4/15/2003
Sales Rank -- 5,125
12 songs total (including double bonus songs “Before Your Love” and “A Moment Like This”). Co-wrote 4 of the songs.
Carrie Underwood -- “Some Hearts” Released 11/15/2005
Sales Rank -- 192
14 songs total (including double bonus songs “I Aint in Checotah Anymore” and “Inside Your Heaven”). Wrote “I Aint…” (ouch).
Taylor Swift -- “Taylor Swift” Released 10/24/2006
Sales Rank -- 1,539
11 songs total, wrote 3 of the songs and co-wrote the rest.
Re-released 3/18/2008 to include 3 bonus songs and a pop version of “Teardrops on My Guitar”.
Sales Rank -- 25,634
Perhaps Jive has a special marketing plan for “Somebody Out There” and other songs. Pirating a MP3 download seems inappropriate, regardless of the rationale or circumstances.
Joner #18, that’s brilliant! Did not know that about I’m Yours. On YouTube, I just checked and there are 6 vids of Somebody Out There and this one has over 1,000 views already:
rel="nofollow ugc">
Joner #18, what a great story and a Jason Mraz one too! Great moral of the story!!
Kizzi #10, I think I want to marry Tom O’Neill too. Thanks for the article!
Beebee, I love My Hands! I guess I just haven’t said so yet. I love everything on your list (though I love sooo many, as you no doubt!). I love Let Me Go too!! All the faster beat songs bring out the Fly Girl in me!
Tofan, to answer your question from another thread, yes, my avatar is a sketch of David I did to give to him. DavidfanLIZ took it to the Evansville concert for me. I knew he might find it funny to receive a portrait of himself considering he doesn’t even like looking at himself in videos or photos, I asked LIZ to tell him he could give it to his mom if he were embarrassed. LIZ said he laughed. Then when he wrote back, he said “I gave it to my mom since she is here w/ me haha.” I got a David “haha”!!
MasterClassLady today is featuring the bonus track “Falling.” If you haven’t already checked her site today, you may want to.
http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news07343m01
With Ellen DeGeneres devoting her entire show to the singer yesterday, and a performance of “Love Story” tonight at the nationally televised CMA Awards on ABC tonight, where she’s nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, Swift’s new album Fearless is headed for first-week sales of between 500-550k, easily #1 next Tuesday.
The album is #1 at iTunes, while critics have been effusive, with Rolling Stone giving the disc four stars and the N.Y. Times raving, “Ms. Swift has quickly established herself as the most remarkable country music breakthrough artist of the decade. One of Nashville’s most exciting songwriters.”
Jive/ZLG American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is headed for an impressive 225-240k for his self-titled debut album, good for second place, thanks to the smash single, “Crush.”
Labelmate T-Pain gives the House of Weiss two in the Top 3 with his latest effort, Thr33 Ringz, his tribute to the art of the Auto-Tune, looking at between 175-190k.
UMe’s Now 29 returns with first-week sales in the 160-170k range, a far cry from its glory days, but probably good enough for #4.
this is fantastic news for David!
Hi Rascal. I’ve been reading your blogs for a while, but this is my first time commenting because this time I just couldn’t resist 😉
Your summation of “Somebody Out There” is dead on and I agree whole heartedly with everything you said. (Also, “lovedavid” -- your comment had me snorting with laughter!)
I dare say this is my favorite track of the entire album (closely followed by “To Be With You”, which is just GORGEOUS, and “Your Eyes Don’t Lie”, which I cannot help chair dancing to. Seriously. As in two solid hours of yesterday in which I sort of forgot to work…)
I hope “Somebody Out There” DOES get all the airplay it deserves, even if that only means(for now, anyway) repeated hits on youtube to bring more attention to this wonderfully soulful and mellow mid tempo ballad. And besides that, it’s got that Jason Mraz meets Jack Johnson vibe to it -- two talented and serious artists who are extremely popular so if they were just going for the “hit” factor, WTF, Jive?!
This song is amazing, and so is David. I wish he had been allowed more creative and production control because then yes, we definitely would have heard so much more of the endearing David we’ve come to love over the past year. Still, we understand how difficult this journey must have been for him and support the great album that he must be so very proud of, even if it may not be entirely representative of who David is as an artist or person.
I guess I can understand, in a way, the motivation behind Jive and what they feel they need to do. But you’re right -- it doesn’t mean I have to like it. The little talent stifling pissants…just for that, I copied the music player I found on imeem with that song, and embeded it into my myspace profile. And I’m STILL listening to it. Because I get it. WE get it, yes we do! Hopefully everyone else will soon, enough. GO DAVEY!!
I 100% agree with your words, rascal. Not only in that assent to what you say -- but you draw out the points sharply and clearly in a way I wish I had done. Best thing written yet on the whole current David/Jive disconnect. Especially the “who he already is” part. You nailed it!!
Somebody Out There is my favorite song on the album.
Anyone close to Team David and Jive… get Rascal’s post quickly to TPTB. This delineates exactly what’s lacking right now, and at its heart. We’re not saying give all the reins to David and Jeff, and we appreciate the extent to which Jive has gotten things right — but this seriously needs to be disseminated among those who can affect these things.
joner #18 What a cool story.
Thinking back on an earlier blog from David, he was encouraging people to pre-order his CD because some of the tracks would “go away”.
Personally, I think he was referring specifically to “Somebody Out There” because, knowing music, he felt it was a good song. I think he was stoked for everybody to hear it but was too humble to self-promote it.
ronaldsf -- I think I’m with you. I think it’s Number One. It would be a closer tie with “To Be With You” if it weren’t for that idiotic duet treatment (I mean really, you get a guy who has one of the most beautiful voices of the decade--if not the age--and on the one bona-fide ballad in the whole collection you toss in some chick songwriter for, what, accessorizing?!? Clueless doesn’t even describe it).
“Somebody Out There” is simple, elegant, beautiful, authentic, stunning. It’s a gorgeous piece of music.
Pure. Perfect. David.
So… the best cut in the whole collection is a David song? Uh-huh. Yeah. And, no, we’re not surprised.
Oh, Rascal, you always know how to translate our thoughts and feelings into words.
It also occurred to me suddenly while listening to Somebody Out There (I can’t seem to stop — it’s the only song in the collection I keep playing over and over) that other artists are likely going to want to cover this one. It may be the only one with that potential.
Dang it, David, your genius prevailed again. I’m in awe.
That is my favorite song on the album rascal. I too have it on repeat and can’t seem to stop listening to it!
Is “Somebody Out There” a co-write? Or 100% David?
I have unknown album, unknown artist and only song tracks no titles. What is this? What is Jive doing?
Hmmm, mine is listed as “unknown” as well. Good question: What is Jive doing? “hack” is so appropriate here.
Rascal, great comments as usual! I love your insights, even though I think they may be a little harsh sometimes! Oh well, maybe this 51-year-old just needs to grow up a little bit! I love “Somebody Out There.” It’s probably my third favorite behind “To Be With You”, and “Desperate.” I really don’t get why Jive is confining David this way. Are they afraid he might just outgrow them if more people realize his genius and greatness? Maybe it’s because they underestimate the intelligence of David’s fans (GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!). Either way, I hate to see David treated so unjustly. He needs to be freed from his “box.”
If I had to pick a favorite at this point, it would be “Somebody Out There.” Or maybe it would be “Works for Me.” [“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)”]
You don’t suppose Jive has got something up their sleeve with “Somebody Out There” do you?
Do you think they also might see the potential in the song as well and have plans to market it separately as a special single with a video or something like that? I mean, how can they not see how GREAT this song is? (Kind of Babyface meets Eric Clapton IMHO)
Someone’s head must be up their butt…maybe it’s me!
…and Rascal, after my previous post, why do I get the distinct feeling you really want to ask me if I “hear an echo up there”…
Patience…Jive would not trust a “first” album to a 17 year old, because clearly they do not know him like we do, nor did they ask. If they had, we would have told them our mantra: “Trust the Archuleta”.
♥
For those with the “Unknown Album” message, you can have your media player go out and search for the info. It then imports all the song names and such into your player.
Oh, Josie , you are so very right, we do Trust the Archulator. Patience is a virtue and I have a scarcity of it.
Joner, I wish Jive had something up their sleeve!
That got me thinking about what that strategy would be…hmmm…here is the definitive, gorgeous, soul piercing, quintessential Archuleta debut song, written by David and we are going to release it to those who will pre-order as a teaser, let people rip it, then roll out down the road after they have gnashed their teeth, wailed and moaned and pulled their hair out at the injustice of it all to raise awareness on the internet and increase sales….hmmm. Ok, I am suffering an episode of drama trauma. I hope, Joner, there is a strategy to this. *fingers crossed* You give me hope.
And, does anyone know of a service that can delete the female vocals from “To Be With You.” I’ll pay good money to hear that song with David’s voice only.
Joner #38, yeah I just shared that thought over at Snarkies as well.
This is what I wrote:
I thought about it too: a “disappearing” song would be a perfect song to include in an eventual re-release. Release it as a single, it does well, and everyone freaks out and is like “I bought the Deluxe Album but that wasn’t on it, so I have to go buy this now!”
SOT is just too good NOT to be released. It simultaneously has a pop appeal (musically -- it’s catchy and appealing), cross-generational appeal (good for AC, and also making tweens melt), and it shows the “real” David.
I stuck to my conviction that the bridge to Angels WAS gonna be included in the final track, and that TPTB was just playing with us. 🙂
I’m hoping this “conspiracy theory” is true, too!
And yeah, I agree with what everyone said that if this is never re-released I’m not gonna jump off a bridge, because the album is doing GREAT and David WILL have more say in the future! 🙂
Rascal,
I agree with you. My favorite songs are actually the bonus tracks -- Somebody Out There (beautiful ballad, Waiting for Yesterday (extremely catchy, cant stop singing it), Falling (haunting and his voice, thud), and Works for me (i cant stop dancing, and its all david, his feeling, triple thud)!!! I love them and I’m constantly playing! His voice! aahh!!! No overproduction, which I love, aahhh!!!! Oh well, I trust David, and I understand that he need sales right now, before he can say hasta la vista Jive!
When itunes advertised the pre-order did they mention that this song would disappear? I don’t remember hearing that and wondered why they would not let people know….just curious.
ronaldsf and joner -- GULP! You mean that is really a strategy labels use? GAH!
rascal, hate to say this but you hit the nail on the head. Thanks for download, MUCH better quality than the one I already had.
Jive would not trust a “first” album to a 17 year old, because clearly they do not know him like we do, nor did they ask.
Josie, that’s part of my problem with their strategy:
1.) Their obvious desire to exploit child labor (that’ right, I said it, and I do hope David is getting some sleep).
2.) They have no excuse to “not know” David because, like everybody else who watched AI and followed David’s career post-show, obviously had a chance to know him “like we do.” Whatever happened to good old fashioned “research”?
3.) They already struck some kind of deal since David basically said, at the end of the finale, he was “assigned” to Jive. If they wanted David, they should have some intelligence behind their decision, other than to “steal him from Disney.” Of course, maybe that’s all they were thinking since Disney now dominates teen pop and perhaps now with David, Jive has a chance to reign once again the way they once did.
Now, I’m not nearly as bitter about these reasons since I think David turned out a solid enough debut CD. I do think they shortchanged David’s talent somewhat, and that’s disappointing, because you want to feel confident that the label he’s working for recognize his massive potential.
I also don’t understand the music industry much. As someone who once wrote a book, even as a first-timer (I didn’t have a clue about how royalties work and the editing process, but I learned quickly I had no control over the packaging -- book cover and book title) I had control over the book’s contents. Even when assigned to an editor, not one word was changed without my approval. And rightfully so since, as an author, the book reflects me. I don’t understand how a music artist doesn’t have the same control over the content on their album, and if they don’t, they should.
Because, whatever faults people find, they always blame the artist. Look how all the music critics have been targeting David with their criticisms even though the bulk of their complaints -- lyrics or production for example -- mostly have nothing to do with David. Yet, because it’s his album, he gets targeted. All the more reason why he, at the end of the day (regardless of his age), should have final say.
I mean, I’m sure he did to some extent, but when I hear people say it’s the label who has final say, that just doesn’t sound right to me.
See copy of my post from two threads ago.
.I don’t understand how a song everyone is loving,”Somebody Out There” can disappear?? Ok, so we can’t BUY it anywhere after today…YET. It doesn’t make sense to me. Why does this happen? Who makes those decisions? Is it a common practice? SOT is one of the better songs on the album..David’s vocals are so… David! I hate that the whole world may not have the opportunity to hear it! Dang! Can’t WE DO SOMETHING?
Got no response to my concerns then, but I’m happy to see we all agree it’s an injustice to David! We have to let David know how much we love this song! So I called David on his 800 # and TOLD him! Then I voted at FOD for SOT to be one of the songs I want to hear him sing at the Jingle concerts..Now I’m gonna make a video using this song..the more exposure the song gets the better. What else can WE do to get SOT re-releashed..TPTB may have wanted it to disappear..WE must show them the power of David’s fanbase and show them WE will not let that happen!!
We will have David’s back!!
Right on, SF! Power to You Tube! Power to the People! 🙂
#47 Kizzi, I really don’t know. Just my hyper-speculating. (And it felt like hyper-speculating when I was saying the bridge to Angels was coming back, because we had heard the preview leak without it. I’m keeping the faith, and will also support any campaign to raise the visibility of SOT!)
Isn’t it somewhat fitting that the song we’re talking about rescuing from obscurity is called “Somebody Out There”? About David saying ‘hold on, there IS somebody out there you are looking for that you haven’t found yet’?
Just saying… LOL
/waves to SF
I kinda responded didn’t I ? I thought you didn’t get the song in time from Itunes. That is why I offered to “hook you up, sistah”. It is my favorite song of the whole bunch. I believe Rascal spoke of David’s “cry” in his voice. SOT is perfection!

I found some pictures taken at Virgin Album signing. Linked from Rickey’s. What a LONG day our sweet pea had yesterday.

Just watched Regis & Kelly (DVR) and the question about David shaving is a FIRST..soo stupid coming from Regis..his odd was showing BIG TIME when he told him he had the best smile and his skin was so smooth & soft….Poor Regis..it looked like he wanted to touch David’s face..I feel his pain! hahaha!
Josie & ronaldsf #52, I’m with you both, patience and keep the faith. I just included a comment about SOT in my iTunes review. (Nothing “out there” just a simple “as one of my favourite tracks, it’s a crime it’s not available after Nov. 11.”)
Does anyone know who cowrote it with David? (Nothing on ASCAP.)
Vermeer #22, such a beautiful sketch, so glad you were able to get it to David (and Lupe) and get a “haha”! (Hi Puri and Anuhea!)
Rascal:
Your comment is right on the mark. This is a beautiful song, truly gut-wrenching. It is an amazingly plaintive voice-in-the-wilderness song. When I first heard it and almost cried, once again, I thought back to Paula Abdul during AI’s auditions when he sang ‘Heaven,’ when she showed her emotions by voting for David to get on the show by wrapping her arms around herself, indicating an intense desire to wrap her arms around the 16 year old standing before her who had just touched her heart with only a portion of the song. Well, now David is almost 18, and he can still produce that same kind of reaction from his thoughtful fans. It is an amazing power he possesses. To evoke such depths of feelings from otherwise sober people, Wow! What can anyone say?
After buying then listening to the standard album, and then finding the bonus tracks on the net I was P.O.’d big time. I felt cheated that this song and Fallin were not on the CD that I paid for. I hope the day comes that I can legally buy his bonus tracks, all of them, on perhaps a second album. David should get paid (i.e., recognized) properly for this work of gorgeous, heartfelt artistry.
Regarding your comments the other day that David looked tired: How true. His schedule is costing him his health. This morning on Regis he was not himself singing “Crush.” I at first thought that the audio system must have been incorrectly tuned, but during his back and forth with Regis after singing it was clear that he was/is suffering from a very bad cold. And despite his illness, he performed! What a trooper!
Kizzi #10: Thanks for the LA Times article. I picked up the Times this morning but haven’t had the time to read it. As for the comment by Tom O’Neill that, “Music journos tend to be guys with a desperate, inexplicable need to prove their masculinity by trying to assassinate anybody who croons great schmaltz”, I had to laugh, having known a couple of that ilk. That ‘inexplicable need’ O’Neill speaks of is totally explicable, but O’Neill probably chose to avoid the bricks that would come flying his way if he spelled it out.
Thanks, Abrra, for sharing that link. However hard David is working, it’s great to see him so happy and joyous! I love how he can laugh out loud so easily.
We bicker a lot here (and rightly so, I’m glad we can express our concerns about David’s albums and what Jive has in store for him), but I do love that, as tedious as this schedule is, David does look like he’s having the time of his life.
There is something different about David this week. I see a new awareness in his eyes.
Happy, indeed! Fatigued--probably some with that schedule. However, when he went home he didn’t tuck in and rest, he went to lunch with his sisters and to a concert in the evening with his Mom, by choice. So, I am thinking he isn’t killing himself and on the verge of collapse.
I was also thinking he hit a mile marker and is re-calibrating, shedding his skin, and growing to the next level.
Re: Crush -- He has “morning voice” and our singing experts here say that many singers won’t sing before noon because they have to warm up all the internal tissues that are used to create the music. He nailed Crush at TRL and I thought the Regis/Kelly Crush was good, band was in sync. Erin4David says Crush is hard to sing anyway.
I just checked the iTunes Pop Chart, and here’s what I found:
Crush #9, #13
A Little Too Not Over You #17
Touch My Hand #19
To Be With You #31
Angels #32, #74
Barriers #37
You Can #38
My Hand #41
Desperate #65
Running #78
Your Eyes Don’t Lie #84
Don’t Let Go #86
I am soooo in love with FALLING!!! David’s voice…THE VOICE.is so “David”..just like on SOMEBODY OUT THERE. How else can we describe the songs but to say they are so “David” and we all understand completely what is meant.
Vote for CRUSH on VH1…
olemr2001, Thanks for the chart list..
I know it’s official that TMH will be the next single..but why? Don’t get me wrong, I love the song, but since it CAN”T be one of the bonus songs, then it should be ALTNOY since David co-wrote it..What are they thinking anyway? Oh I know..TMH will be easier to sing live, maybe?
I’m not going to fault Jive until I see something potentially going wrong with David’s career as a result.
Like MJ said on her blog, the point of this CD is not to please the existing fanbase. It’s to gain new fans. And going for a more mainstream pop CD is obviously what Jive felt had the best chance of doing that. By all indications, the sales are great so far.
We all knew that we would have to wait for future albums to really see the Mayor/Mraz type music from David emerge. I think Jive has done well by him so far. And from Jeff’s comments, I think he does too.
Freofan #8, I am with you. If there is anything I can do, let me know.
SF, did I say I like your avatar?
Rascal, I too agree that some of the bonus songs are better than some of the ones in the CD.
Every day I discover something new in the songs, I like them more as the days go by. What’s not to like!!!
I almost feel a bit sorry for David. He put out a very credible pop cd at17 that has some of his fans elated. On the other hand he has another segment, just as important to him already worried about how the suits are treating him. The thing is he knew there would be compromise. He knew he couldn’t do it all his way. He had his Dad watching his back, but even with that he would have to fight tooth and nail to get just a sliver of what he wanted. He succeeded as far as I am concerned. I am going to be satisfied watching him fight and tilt at windmill because of the success he will earn with this one will afford him to make an even bigger splash on his terms with his next effort.
I love Somebody Out There, and I am over the moon with Works for Me. I have a feeling that Jive has a method to it’s madness with regards to both songs.
a small aside… one way to stay focused while voting VH1 is to put on David’s album (all 17 tracks if y’got ’em) and vote for the duration (at the very least :p)
It Works For ME! 🙂
(don’t foreget about musiqtone voting, too)
Kizzi #10, Tom O’Neill is my new best friend. Love his review:
‘fiercely romantic music…’ and ‘once-in-a-decade pop voices: A silky tenor with a natural melancholy….a heartbreaker by default….pop genius.”
Beebee, Joner, I love your spirits and enthusiasm. It is so contagious.
SF#50 WE must show them the power of David’s fanbase
POWER TO THE FANS!!! yeah!
Anuhea, puri, WELCOME!!!
Rascal #30, ‘So… the best cut in the whole collection is a David song? Uh-huh. Yeah. And, no, we’re not surprised’
Amen to that.
Maybe Joner #38 is right and Jive has some plans for Somebody Out There, they CANNOT be that clueless, or could they?? Oh no!!
olemr2001 #60, great numbers, thank you, great to know.
Josie, I will be patient: TTA (Trust the Archuleta) TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA TTA
Kizzi #59
I’ve heard of the ‘morning voice’ of singers, and I hope, for David’s sake, that was what I was hearing on Regis this a.m., but it sure sounded like a cold to me.
#68 realmusiclover -- hope it is ‘morning voice’ and not a serious cold. I noticed at once part of the song he turned away and cleared his throat.
I was thinking that it’s too bad they don’t have an alternate song for him to sing that’s less taxing vocally than Crush.
Yeah, Joner..like Somebody Out There!!!
silverfox #55, “..it looked like he wanted to touch David’s face..I feel his pain! hahaha!” LOL!!! The shaving question is INCREDIBLY stupid, I must say. Ugh.
olemr2001, thank you for the chart info!
BTW, SF Bay Area fans -- beebee? ronaldsf?, davidfanLIZ and I would like to know if some of you have plans to meet before or after the Jingle Ball concert in Sacto? We are free to meet for dinner, drinks, a chat, or see at your seats perhaps. Let me/us know if you are interested. [email protected] Thnx!
brooklyndawn — #65 — Believe me, I considered that. But it’s both too risky and too clever. We’re not talking about terribly sophisticated people here. They know what they think works, they don’t take chances with anything like originality. Don’t give them too much credit.
HEY everybody. LOVE my cd from itunes, preordered and got the bonus tracks, got the walmart cd and with it the bonus track, so I’ve GOTM ALL ll!!!.
One note: my cd from Walmart also does NOT show song names, artist name or album name when I downloaded it into my computer. Just track numbers. I had to manually label them. Whats up with THAT?
Did I forget to say yeehaw?? YEEEEHAWWWW!!!!
Thats Arkansas hillbilly for I’m EXCITED!
I’m in love with somebody out there..
hope this will be the future music from david.
well, i love Falling,You Can,Barriers,and Desperate too.. 😉
Dang it, the bonus tracks is just too Great. That should be on the regular album.
Dang it, jive !! 😀
junee..we’re in love with somebody out there too…David!
Haha! sorry..I couldn’t resist!
You love all the songs I love the most too!
There are many videos already on You Tube dedicated to Somebody Out There..very cool how so many fans are wanting to keep this song ALIVE!!
Hey everyone! I’m trying to compile the important reviews (positive and negative) on All Things David: http://allthingsdavid.blogspot.com/
Let me know if you come across any that I haven’t yet listed.
Thanks! 🙂
Hi all-
I am not worried about all the market manipulation. I am enjoying the part of it that offers David increased exposure, both for the benefit of new fans and ODDers. Any exploitation of his youth that is going on behind the scenes is obviously unacceptable, but if David and his family are willing participants, then that is a choice they make. Many of us have worked excessively hard over the years, especially in our youth, to achieve whatever level of success we desire. If David views this as the opportunity of his lifetime in the world of entertainment then let him go for it.
Personally for me though, I would tell him that he is much more than an entertainer- he is an artist. And, a skilled and inspired one at that. I put him on on a higher plane. For those of us who identify with his art- he has reached into our soul, touched it, and changed it. That is the power of art.
I am not lead by his record label nor by the opinions of critics, friends, or other bloggers. I don’t think any ODDers are. We feel what we feel, and we like what we like. And we know it.
I will love David and buy his art for the balance of his career, and he will continue to enrich my soul. Some I will like more than others, but that’s why he’ll sing lots of songs. I can’t wait for his solo tour and I am happy that his journey has begun.
HG#80- Thanks for the compilation of the reviews. While I am not lead by them, I do enjoy reading them- its entertaining! 🙂
Does anyone realize how unusual it is to have all 12 songs chart on the top 100 on Itunes?! Most top albums have 2, maybe 3 songs do really well right off the release of an album, but this album..well it’s an unusual album created by a unique artist, THE VOICE!!
Also, Did anyone read the post on FOD about what Jazzman ( Jeff ) said when asked what he thought about the top 20 on VH1? he answered, “I don’t know, what is that?” or something like that? So does that mean he’s not aware about Crush being #1 four weeks in a row? Or did he misunderstand the question??
Anywhoo..vote, vote, vote on VH1..even if Jeff doesn’t know about it!
Thanks, happy. This is such a milestone event, David’s debut, that if this resource guide is going to be just that, I at least want to capture what folks said right out the gate. Then years from now (if this site still exists) we can always look back at the initial reaction and have fun with it.
SF, one of the things I noticed is that every reviewer singled out a particular song they liked or disliked. There is actually zero consensus on which songs are the most popular, meaning that David’s songs have different kinds of appeals. I imagine the breakdown is something like:
The alt-rock crowd preference: “Desperate”
The teen-pop crowd: “ALTNOY” or “TMH”
The old-school R&B crowd: “YEDL”
The contemporary R&B crowd: “Barriers”
The adult contemporary crowd: “TBWY”
So, it’s impressive that all the songs are doing well, but part of me thinks this is because we’ve only had one single from this album -- “Crush.” To tell you the truth, I’m really surprised Jive hasn’t released a second single to coincide with the album dropping. Even other artists already have 2 or 3 singles currently in rotation, so I’m really not getting their strategy, esp. when 1.)TMH -- a popular choice but not the strongest track, IMO -- is going to be released next and 2.)it’s set to release in December instead of, like, now.
As Vulture already expressed in his review, there’s something to be said about Jive’s lack of heavy promotion (though David’s popularity and talent are strong enough to sell without it). Still, as someone else said in the previous thread, “Crush” is a tough song to sing live, and it would have been nice if David had another song to sing on all these TV shows, like the second single (preferably not TMH).
But then again, what do I know about marketing strategy, unless, as Rascal already mentioned, I’m giving Jive way too much credit.
Hi Rascal -- I am a longtime lurker and admirer of your website. I just wanted to say thank you and bless you for the mp3 post above. Being in a job search phase of my life, I could not afford both the iTunes Deluxe and Walmart CDs. Preferring a hard copy, I went with the Walmart version, but was of course bummed about giving up 4 songs. “Somebody Out There” is my favorite of the 5 bonus tracks, so the mp3 truly made my day. Thanks also for your exceptionally eloquent and thoughtful writing.
HG…you mean when, in ten years David is the most revered musical genius known the world over as THE VOICE? And we will have all these Fansites, Blogs and videos created at the “beginning” by Fans known as Archangels, Angels, Mangels who suffered from a unique, unusual “disorder” called ODD, for which there has never been a cure…Is that when you mean?
I don’t know if Jive is ultimately the right fit for David. He doesn’t want to be a huge teen star, he wants to touch people with his music.
I mean, the right label would say, this is incredible, we have the next John Mayer here (but even better), and he’s only 17! I think of David along the same lines as Norah Jones or Tracy Chapman in terms of talent, musicality, and potential for longevity in the industry. Why don’t these record execs? They are seeing short term dollar signs. Hmmmm….but like David says, everything happens for a reason. Imagine the bidding war that may go on for album #2 or 3…..
yeah, SF, something like that. ha ha!
LittleMushroom, I can’t even imagine a present day label that would give someone like Tracy Chapman a chance if she had debuted in today’s music world.
What a sad commentary on our times!
SF#86- and when you have THE SUIT and I have THE BLACK LEATHER JACKET….?
happy..sounds like a plan!
testing new avi
Hi guys!!! Am back 🙂 Are we all now back on earth already? What did I miss?
Chuckling over Regis… me thinks he has a man crush on our David… “You’re skin is so soft!” LMAO
HG -- ain’t it the truth, sister 🙁
Hey have you guys seen the bizarre new photo of David at Snarkies, done by a rock photographer? I’m not sure if I love it or hate it…
P.S. I just have to post it….I can’t help myself….nothing against the artist, more to the dismissers, the non-believers…
okay…
A Little Too Not Over You is higher than Light On on iTunes.
I tend to think like SF about David being destined to become a superstar no matter what, and his future will unfold itself in whatever ways it is supposed to, and if Jive is the label for him, then it is probably serving some good purpose the same way his becoming runner-up instead of winning the title did. It is all good, though frustrating. Even if David didn’t intend to become a huge star, just remembering how people reacted to him from the very very beginning of the AI season with the most screams he was getting every week, he has it all to make people go cur-ah-zeee (how did you spell this SF?). I am so happy and proud to be his fan. I can’t say that enough!
Has anyone here heard about this? I just saw it buried at FOD. It must be in the evening (there’s no set day or time yet) ~ because David has the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade early in the day! Busy, busy boy! I guess he’s not going home for Thanksgiving???
“I’m going to admit that until today, I had no idea who Delilah was. She seems like a very nice lady, although after visiting her website and learning more about her show, I’m not sure Delilah is exactly my thing. That was, until I learned that David Archuleta was joining her for one of her “star-studded Thanksgivings at the Farm.”
David S. sent me this information from the Delilah Loyal Listener Newsletter:
Star-Studded Thanksgiving at the Farm
It’s that time of year again -- the annual turkey event at the farmhouse! This month family, friends and a few special guests will be joining me around my table for Thanksgiving. Included in my guest list are: Faith Hill, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Michael McDonald, Wayne Brady, David Archuleta, James Taylor and my good friend Jim Brickman.”
Did I say WOW! CRAZ-EH!!! David is in the BIG-TIME now! 🙂
Okay, I need to give Azoff props for that Delilah Thanksgiving thing!!!!!!
Gee, Mushroom, it’s not so much “bizarre” as…gosh, how do I put this delicately without starting World War III? It looks “gay”? No, I’m not saying anything about David, only about the photo (you are talking about the heart/flower thingy, right?).
Various fans are obviously channeling him in all kinds of new, exciting, and strange ways, that’s for sure!
Um, forgive my ignorance, but who is Delilah? And, is Azoff the force behind all these promotions, not Jive?
Yes HG I’m talking about the heart/flower thing. I didn’t think it looked gay, what actually bugged me the most is that it looks like the arrow is going through his head! UGH!
I can’t help but think the photographer is a non-fan. It makes him into a puppy-dog cliche (IMO). Look at her other work -- looks nothing like this. Clearly the ELLE staff has more understanding and appreciation for David’s natural beauty.
I think the promos are Azoff, yes, but it must be in concert with Jive -- after all Jive has all the connections at the radio stations right?
The photo is completely kitsch but not very good kitsch, truth be told. If you’re going to do that sort of thing, then do it with panache, like Rabid! ha ha!
Anyway, yeah, I imagine Jive has the connections at the radio stations.
Like someone once said in reference to the ELLE shoot…with David there is no need to “guild the lily” 😉
HG #100 -- http://www.delilah.com/home/home.html
I don’t know much about her except that she has a radio program.
Absolutely spot on rascal, bravo! Somebody Out There is stunning. It’s difficult to believe that most will never get to hear it.
Thanks for the info, archiesfan4life.
vermeer…I’ll tell you what’s CRA-ZEH!! I don’t know how many are aware of this, but a reporter who was covering the show, said that without fail, there would be one or two females in the audience who would literally fall to the floor like in a faint (swooning) when David would come on stage. That’s CRA-ZEH! Of course, that was not shown on TV!!
Heart…I saw that at FOD..My question is..are her guests actually THERE or is she playing their music..she is a DJ after all. David will be on a Float in the parade won’t he? I really, really hope his whole family will be in NY with David on Thanksgiving..He should be with family that day! What am I saying..of course they will be there, won’t they?
One more thing..you know how I’m always predicting David’s future…well, I think this Debut album was “mostly pop” but also “a little bit of this, a little bit of that” because David knows money and the bottom line is the name of the game for a Debut album..I think this album was genius, even if there were concessions and compromises he had to make..It is exactly what he said it would be..David’s taste in music does not include much pop..remember the LIST OF DAVID’S FAVS? So, it looks like this album will be a money maker for Jive, Azoff and David. That means, IMO, David’s next album will be a more adult contemporary with an R&B Soul flavor.along with some message songs..I buh-lieve that was his goal for a 3rd album, but I don’t think he’ll wait. It’ll be the 2nd album and he will win Grammys with that 2nd album..( maybe even with this first one too ).
Laugh if you must..but mark my words!
My heart just bled (Happy, I need the emergency room!)while listening to “Somebody Out There”. It is such a heartfelt, wishful song with a deep yearning that reminds me of John Lennon’s “Imagine”. Due to some terrible computer issues (Warning! there is a virus going around that claims it is software to combat computer viruses called Antiviruspro 2009. Stay as far away from it as you can!) I was not able to get I-Tunes. So, I was unaware of how wonderful this song is. Now having heard it, I WANT it and the only way to get it is to make a copy provided from someone else. So, yes I will copy this song…As HG would say -- RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE! lol
I loved the Jason Mraz story and I hope this song will get a following like “I’m Yours” did.
I’d also like to extend my greetings to all the new posters 🙂 Souldoutmd #85- your name has piqued my curiosity. I tried putting gaps between the letters and sounding it out. Will you give me a hint on what the name means? 😉
HG -- Jive as his record label oversees the charting of his musical career. The charting of his persona -- David as the “product” (merchandising, ads, product endorsements, charities, etc…) is Azoff’s & Jeff’s domain. But of course the left hand should know what the right hand is doing. So something like the Thanksgiving @ the Farm is in all probability by Azof’s.
Crush is definitely challenging to sing live but David is a pro.
Considering he’s only had 4 chances to perform it so far (including Ford Day, and it’s been 2 months since tour), I think he’s doing really well. He’s also adjusting to the new band. And it’s not the singing that will strain his voice, it’s all the talking, and trying to be heard over all that fan screaming. 🙂
Kizzi: “I was also thinking he hit a mile marker and is re-calibrating, … growing to the next level.” So true.
YES, YES, YES, Rascal, you made my morning. I was rendered speechless and functionless yersterday after listening to the deluxe/bonus/extra (whatever name they called) songs including “Somebody Out There” on Youtubes. I was so vexed with the thought that they left these better songs out of the hard copy that I went to bed very early (bad dreams the whole night) and got up only at 10am this morning (an hour ago)!!
I dragged myself out of bed, debating with myself whether I should download these songs (illegally?) or going through the whole tidious process of getting them
legally and still missed out one or two?
I never thought being a fan (never been one so invested before) would have to go through such a heart-drenching experience.
Holy Mackerel, I have never shed so much tears in my life in such a short period!
I see, thanks for clarifying, jackryan. Cutter12, that’s right! *fist in the air.*
SF, I believe in your prophesy. Absolutely!
OK, I need to get off my computer and tend to some work I’ve been procrastinating. This has been fun, as always.
Signing off until next time. G’nite all! 🙂
((((Diana))))
HG -- Delilah’s I DJ a believe. http://www.delilah.com/home/home.html
SF -- my dear I’ve missed you! And I bow to your predicting ability 🙂 I share with your optimism about The Grammies for David. As I also said several threads back, even for this album, I predict he will be nominated at the very least.
Speaking of awards,
1. Have you guys voted at VH1? It would be a nice thank you gift for him for a great debut album, particularly the wonderful bonus tracks he painstakingly made to reach out to fans. 8 songs in 2 weeks? Simply amazing.
2. Also, anyone here received the email from People’s Choice. Voting will end on Dec 7 but you can still register if you want to be part of the voting process.
http://www.pcavote.com/pca/
Me too, HG..tired & sleep, so G’nite all..and for David,
Dear Lord, We are unworthy to ask, but we are asking anyway, please Take Care Of Our Earth Angel, David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that’s thrown in his path. Give him the courage and guidance to SAY NO to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround him with loving and supportive people who love him as we, his ARCHANGELS do. Seperate him from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he needs it and stamina when he feels fatigue.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective
arms. Keep him HEALTHY and strong so that he can continue to fulfill the Destiny that was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
This we, though unworthy, humbly pray. Amen.
Sweet dreams David, be safe & secure in our love always! CONTIGO SIEMPRE CON AMOR! Take care.
Hey, cutter12, I feel your pain!!! I had to pay $180 to get that little demon cleaned from my computer. Fortunately, the REAL antivirus program I had installed is doing its job, so I can listen to David non-stop if I so desire (and I do so desire!).
goodnight HG and SF
hi vermeer- I never get to respond to you, I always log off too early, and then by the next day, too many posts have gone by. I always love your posts.
silverfox — I really love that you leave a prayer for David here every night, I really do. He and we are blessed to have you in our midst.
Delilah is a DJ with a national nighttime radio show that is primarily geared to women (probably ages 30 and up). The show is comprised of loosely Christian self-help talk and encouragement, and she also reads dedications and song requests from writers. The show has a sappy reputation, but it is huge publicity for David, as the show has a very loyal and large audience. Delilah has a farm (apparently where the meal will be) and she has adopted many children. I wonder if they will actually broadcast the gathering at her farm?
If you check out Snarky’s, there’s photos of David at the signing last night. The photos of the label men in suits surrounding him are a little eerie to me for some reason.
I won’t venture too far into the debate about Jive’s choices — I love this album and enjoy each song, but “Somebody Out There” is a definite favorite for me, too. It is sweet, but it also digs deeper into the truth of a good relationship, I think.
I’ll definitely support the song by clicking on the iTunes vids. And I’ll wait eagerly (and patiently) until the day when David’s and Jeff’s inputs are allowed a more weight.
Silverfox, thank you for your nightly prayer for David, I am praying with you while reading it.
Sweet dreams to you.
Cutter12 I had trouble all day yesterday with itunes. Then yesterday evening there was a pop up on my computer wanting me to download the antiviruspro 2009 you spoke of. Thank goodness I did not download it, but I have had trouble with my computer all day today. It keeps freezing and the mouse will not click on anything. Seems to be ok right now so I hope nothing has happened to my computer. Thanks for the warning.
Sorry, I’ve been gone most of the evening, and have not read ALL the posts above, but …
HG ~ yes, Delilah is a DJ. I thought she was local to Orlando, but I guess not. She kinda reminds me of a “Dear Abby” of the radio, and sounds like a very nice person, but I’d rather listen to music minus the “talk.”
SF ~ you know, you’re probably right about Delilah playing the MUSIC of those guests, and not actually having them around her table ~ but who knows! Even so, it’s GREAT that she singled out David to be amongst that particular group of singers! If I’m not still playing David’s album non-stop by Thanksgiving, I may listen to her program! Hopefully, FOD will have more info posted before then, if anyone is interested.
I totally love David and respect him.
But I doubted in a way that this Album would be that good cause the “hacks”
I like alot of it but I LOVE fallin and somebody to love.
I agree with you Rascal but think about the artist we are all talking about and listening to and crying and so happy for his success. The Artist named David Archuleta.
JK Rowling, finally found a publisher and they had the meetings.
And Joeann we need you to hide that your a women. Our “metrics” or marketing tell us things dear sweet writer.
Our target group is 9 to 12 year old boys and they will not read a book by a woman.
And dont quit ya day job cause “children’s book writers” never make any money.
John Mayer, goofy Jewish boys dont sing the blues. Trust us.
Dad, yes John, remember when i picked the guitar at 13?
You wanted to sing like Stevie Ray Vaughn son.
James Blunt dont end your debut album with a song about your time in the Balkans. The war and the killing and the rapes. Trust us.
We are on a ride. It might be wild and wooly. Happens when Artists like
David James Archuleta are in the drivers seat.
God i love that title.
On the Artistry of David Archuleta.
PS.
Email time to my Harry Potter women. Time for some hot HP videos.
fallin somebody to love deperate barriers touch my hand eyes dont lie
the whole cannon girls.
Well I have to say Thanks Rascal…..This is going straight to my ipod! As someone who has found it next to impossible to get ANY version of the CD (having no room on my credit card for an itunes version!) and the CD unavailible for purchase in New Zealand. I have resorted to importing a copy at NZD $42.95! I don’t feel as horrified at this price as I should simply because I know I’m supporting David LOL and it’ll be here next weekend! :0)
This song is simply sublime THANKS!
good night all. Thanks for the fun.
Diana, international fans can have a CD gifted to them through Team Archie to help cut down on the huge costs of importing it through Amazon or the like.
Rascal #73, I hope for once that you are very wrong. I certainly hope that both songs have the impact they so richly deserve. Did I tell you my middle name was Pollyanna? LOL, and a haha too!
Davidfan -- Strange that the album is not available in NZ yet. In Manila, it was made available immediately. In fact it was in the shelves a day ahead of the launch. It just so happened that I was sick the last 3 weeks so I didn’t have time to check with my favorite music store.
In any case, why not ask TeamArchie to gift you? Your expense in importing 1 CD is already equivalent to over 3 sets of the DeLuxe version…
SF -- looove your prayer for David. Thanks for being who you are to us and to DA 🙂
Rascal -- Thank you.
I didn’t have a copy of *someody out there* and now I do.
Never even heard it until today.
I can’t talk about it yet. Crying too hard.
Thanks again.
(Does Jive know he can do this to people?)
I just love how David is competing with himself on iTunes top Pop Songs and Albums.
Crush, the single #10 Pop songs, on the heels of … #9 Crush the Deluxe CD track.
David Archuleta (Deluxe) album #1 Pop Album… and David Archuleta (regular) at #10.
I LIKE it. 🙂 You GO, David! (Works For Me!)
http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l347/beebeepix/David%20Archuleta/Picture11.png
Oh happy! Dang! We missed each other again. I am always late coming here in the evening. Evening for me is late night for you. Thank you for the compliment. Very sweet of you.
hi Vermeer… I sent you a (flakey) email 🙂
Found this post at loving Archie and I was laughing so hard while reading it, and I wanted to share it with you guys. The post deals with the adventures of young, male Archies in their quest to capture a copy of the coveted “David Archuleta” cd.
“Mine is no biggie but I’ll share anyway. I went to my Wal-mart first to see if the WAL MART Edition is there but it’s not in Canada so then I walked to HMV and found the same album for cheaper (by a few cents but hey it saves). I was about to pick it up until 3 girls came running to get the album each for themselves and they were so squeely and screamy. As a GUY you have to understand it’s going to be weird lining up behind these girls with David’s album in my hands behind three squeemish girls lol so I had a HARD time getting the album so I had to pretend I was buying Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas album (which I actually do plan on getting) to cover up David Archuleta album until the line up ended lol.
Mission accomplished and it was well worth it.
another one:
“There were three girls, I assume, with their older brother at Target today, fangirling over it! Here’s my account of it…
Me: *walks for a few mins, looking for the cd* *sees it*
*grabs cd*
Then, all of a sudden, I heard a squeal, then, “oh my god! Jenny, it’s here!
I heard more squeals after that, accompanied with running.
Me: *turns and sees three girls running, took a step back*
*observes the interaction*
Sis1: *squeals and jumps up and down* Jenny, oh my gosh! He looks so cute!
Sis2: Oh my god, he’s SO HOT!
Sis3: Yeah! *high fives one of the sis* Where’s Michael?
Big Bro: There you guys are! Did you find it?
Sis2: Yeah! Did you get your game? It’s all your fault, we could be listening to it by now!
Big Bro: Yeah, Yeah. Just grab the copies you needed so we can go home.
Sis1: Don’t forget to get one for dad!
Sis3: Oh, and mom, she might ground us.
Big Bro: What’s the big deal about him anyway?
Sis1: Michael! I saw and heard you singing along to “Crush” the other day!
Big Bro: I wasn’t!
Sis2: Sure….
Right as they were walking away, the brother stayed a bit behind, looked at me, then his sisters, before grabbing a copy! That was funny to watch…lol…”
“I CAN RELATE TO THAT, I went to walmart, and started walking around looking for it and then I see it right infront, so I kept walking by and going in circles around and around the halls where they have the CD’s and stuff…..I had to wait until no one was there, then I walk up to it really fast and grab 4 copies, lol (Yes I bought 4 ) and now the problem was paying for them…so I pretend to be looking at some other CD’s and then I got closer to the cashiers….there were 2 cashiers, one was a guy and one was a girl…..so the guy goes on the phone and I walk up really fast to the girl cashier and MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, she didn’t even look to see what Albums they were….lol
BUT IT WAS HARD! ” 😀

Somebody out There is pure David. It’s not Jive. It’s David. It’s the genre of music he obsesses about.
As “I’m Yours” is to David….”Somebody out There” is to me. I’m completely and totally obsessed with this song and have been since the minute I heard it. I was in a state of near panic when it initially appeared that my pre-order was incorrectly placed and the song was no longer available for download. This was the one I knew I had to have. Luckily I found it and it’s mine to keep.
Doesn’t in make you wonder about the 8 recorded tracks that didn’t make the cut?
{{{Janey}}} 🙂
I love it, too.
Silverfox -- your prayer just warms me to the core. It’s all the things I want most for our David. Thank you.
Thanks Freofan #127 for your suggestion.
For this debut Album I have already spent a bomb on pre-ordering 3 copies from Amazon.com and to be told these would arrive in Singapore sometime in December. Impatient to wait, I bought 6 more copies (five meant to be given away to friends) in Singpoare stores on 10 November @ S$16.90 each and later to learn from the websites that there were some 5 songs not included in the hard CD but as “bonus, whatever!” to be available only as downloads
I donated and got gifted from Team Archie for “Crush” when it hit the market. I am still pondering whether I should do this again this time for the bonus tracks, because I understand that Somebody Out There” would not be available. It is driving me CRA-ZEH, for I want all these incredibly “extras” to be gifted to friends also -- I want them to hear the current “best” of David’s. And it is tedious or impossible to do cuz some can only handle hard copy CD!
So frustrating, if Jive is an object, I would twist it and smash it onto the wall and scream with pleasure while doing it. Did I said that? Holy Mackeral, I am getting very voilent!
Just like #57, realmusiclover had said, I hope all these bonus tracks will be on his second albums. By the way, realmusiclover, love your comments, me too!
Have to go, did not get any work done today so far!
Thanks Joner for info about album information-I knew that and just totally forgot. I am much happier now. I have been listening and voting (about 40 to a song but then I am not speedy) and I sure do love Works For Me. His words sure do keep running through my head. He doesn’t worry about where he’s going cause he knows where to wants to be. I love to bop to it. It’s Fun!!! I love his Voice-can’t get enough of it.
The ay,ay,ay on Waiting for Yesterday is addictive. Falling is just beautiful-goosebumps. Let Me Go-Round, round we go -what a political statement. I have tried to hear what you have heard in Somebody Out There but somehow it just doesn’t work for me. I hate when my husbands’ calluses squeak on the guitar and that just is like scratching the chalkboard to me in this song. David’s voice seems Crush range again in the chorus which is beautiful but makes me feel short of breath.
Gosh, as usual, I’m on when it seems like no one else is around.
I LOVE Somebody Out There… I love the acoustic accompaniment…it’s the perfect complement to his VOICE, which is just sublime on this song. I also love Waiting For Yesterday and Falling… I guess I don’t understand why they had to limit the number of songs to 12… what is so magic about 12? Why not 13, or 14… or heck, all 17? Seems like they should have put all of them on one version for sale somewhere…
Gah -- so much to catch up… and i enjoy reading all the posts here.
lovedavid at #16 -- bwahahahaha; but i can feel this is by choice AND by design. Somebody Out There (SOT), disappearing like that -- there must a plan…
joner great find on Mraz’ I’m Yours story! The more am thinking there is more to this disappearing act of SOT… By all accounts, Jive & David have not only test marketed the direction of next albums, they even helped boost the sales of the 1st album!
Before I go back to work, i just have to ask you Joner -- how much were you paid for your services for Your Eyes Don’t Lie? come on ‘fess up! 🙂
brb
Cutter, those lil cd buying stories were a hoot. Thanks! 🙂

Quote: “Doesn’t in make you wonder about the 8 recorded tracks that didn’t make the cut?” unquote
Did I read “8”? Well, I am DEAD. I only know there are 5 that did not make it to the CD. Namely:
1. Somebody Out there
2. Waiting for Yesterday
3. It Works For Me
4. Falling
5. Let Me Go
The exclusion of these 5 are already causing me my sleep and functionality (is there such a word?, Oh gosh, I just can’t think straight today). These songs are so DAVID (as nearly everybody says) and his VOICE and interpretations are absolutely beyond any superlatives!
I need Help!
He recorded Ruined Me which is a cover but it did not make the cut too — thank goodness! That was one of my issue with this album when it was under production -- there were way too many covers being considered.
Anw, an entertaining & insightful vid of Dean w/ CDC on David:

Diana….don’t expire on my account….GOSH!
I believe David recorded 25 tracks in all. 17 made it to the itunes pre-order album. I’ve offered my services in providing shelter to the remaining 8 that are currently homeless.
let me start out by saying that i am a david archuleta fan.
Ok. I did not like this album. i really really wanted it to.
i love how david’s voice sounds. i love that different facets of his personality come out during his performances. i find it fascinating just how much music is an expression of who he is.
this album does not have him in it. i have the songs he wrote for the itunes pre-order album. yes, those are a bit more “him” and better. however, i found the album so scattered in music styles. there’s a lack of unity and “sound”. what is david’s sound? can u tell from this album? no.
i also thought the lyrics were pretty empty and shallow. i found the songs overproduced and sometimes too busy with so many add ons etc. they dont express who he is! that’s what bothers me. some of these songs are styled so closely to radio hits that i swear i’ve heard them before, or at least a very similar song. jive has succeeded in producing an unoriginal piece of radio friendly money-makers.
his album doesn’t remind me of john mayer or sara bareilles. whose music david cited as inspiration. both artists have meaningful lyrics that really speak to you. their sound isn’t so overproduced and feature their voices more than studio tricks/production.
i love david. i have high expectations for him because i think he is so talented and i think his voice, his beautiful and pure voice should be the sole feature of any song. i think jive obscured the artist we all grew to love during american idol.
i actually became nostalgic and went back to listening some AI tracks. maybe this is what david wanted. he’s still young and exploring who he is as a person and musician. maybe he needs this, a popular album so that his future in music is set. maybe next time, he will have more to say from himself and his own experiences and he will have more artistic freedom in the studio.
i will be patiently waiting. 🙂
sorry to people who will be offended by this review. it’s just my opinion. i really am a archie fan. BIG archie fan.
SF,
please include some poor ODDers like me in your nightly prayers for David. Pray that we don’t go insane over these merciless “teasing” from Jive to achieve their marketing goals.
Some eye candies for Arch Angels to wake up to — from David’s TRL guesting:

BTW, pls don;t forget to vote ok? Am leaving the office soon and will log on much much later as I have a function to attend to.
rascal. I am with you on this. This one totally blew me away. Simply beautiful. I also love the bonus track on the wal-mart version: Works for Me. Saddly can’t get this one in China, Anyone know how to download this one? (I got the rest of songs from itune pre-order already)
