There has been very little discussion about how David might sound singing a Country song, although when he sang Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Memories on American Idol, the country artist he brought to my mind was Vince Gill.
David’s voice is a little lower, smokier, and isn’t a true tenor like Vince’s. But I can see David singing this song, sitting on a stool in the middle of the stage, adding a little bit of his own flavor to it.
This is a song that might even appeal to David’s sensibilities. A song with lyrics that evoke a sense of longing for permanence and stability. And there is just enough wailing in this song to showcase David’s voice in the exact tone that makes your heart sing and your eyes tear up.
I think David could make a song like this his own, and bust another genre…
If You Ever Have Forever In Mind
by Vince Gill
You’re climbing mountains, I’m on a hill
You’re always running I’m standing still
You live for the moment, no future no past
I may be a fool to love by the rules and want it to last
If you ever have forever in mind
I’ll be here and easy to find
If your heart isn’t ready to lay down with mine
If you ever have forever in mind
Music has ended still you want to dance
I know that feeling, I can’t take that chance
You live for the moment no future no past
I may be a fool to love by the rules, I want it to last
If you ever have forever in mind
I’ll be here and easy to find
If your heart isn’t ready to lay down with mine
If you ever have forever in mind
Thanks, marlie7, I hadn’t heard that Vince Gill song, even back in my brief “C&W” phase, lol.
I agree, I think David could conquer pretty much any genre of music and make it his own. I’ve often thought “You Can” could crossover into country. Would love to hear him do a little Hank Williams or Patsy Cline someday….
always loved Vince Gill. Wonderful singer and even better guitarist. David would do justice to any of his songs. There was even a bit of country flavor in his America the Beautiful.
Smooth and soulful -- I can hear David’s voice on this one. Nice!
Oh Marlie. I love this song. Vince Gill’s voice is so pure. David could do justice to this and then some.
Another one I’d love to hear him do is “Go rest high on that mountain”, a song that Vince wrote after his brother died. I remember him accepting an award for that. He was so overcome -- he just said “I can’t speak” -- and he didn’t.
Woh. I’m not ordinarily into country music but this bluesy song rocks. David would kill this song. He would change it, make it his own, no doubt. I would looove to hear him sing this one.
