Can a Nice Guy Finish First?
Too Good for His Own Good
A headline in this week’s Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper, asked, “Is [Adam Lambert] too gay to win Idol, or is he too good?” The story went on to suggest that “wanton homophobes” in the A.I. viewing audience threaten Adam’s path to victory.
Later in the piece, the writer flashed back to last season when (in her words), “The judges continued to agitate for teenager David Archuleta, a Mormon who disquietingly sang Imagine at least twice.”
I fired off a letter to the editor that said, in part, “…[the columnist] dismisses David Archuleta, last season’s über-talented runner-up, as a ‘teenager’ and a ‘Mormon’ as if those descriptors have any bearing whatsoever on Archuleta’s stunning vocal skills. Perhaps the writer needs to examine her own prejudices — maybe then, she’ll be able to appreciate a singer who’s truly ‘gifted,’ regardless of their age or religious affiliation.”
After I calmed down, it got me thinking about the bigger picture. Could some of the very things we love about David — his childlike wonder and adorkable innocence, even his famous niceness and humility, be stumbling blocks for winning over a wider audience?
And speaking of stumbling blocks, let’s not ignore the elephant in the room — David’s religion. Even some of ArchuLand’s most liberal-thinkers, those who support “inclusiveness” and “equality,” seem to feel uncomfortable embracing the fact of David’s faith — and these are his fans.
David himself responded to one radio interviewer who commented on his being Mormon, that “people think we have horns.” He wasn’t exaggerating. Even Wikipedia has an entry for “Anti-Mormonism,” which cites incidents of “discrimination, hostility or prejudice [and religious persecution] directed at members of the Latter Day Saint movement (particularly the LDS Church)” dating back to the Utah War of the 1850s.
And beyond religion, David’s very niceness runs contrary to our traditional image of a hotel-trashing Rock Star (heck, even Sinatra decked a few paparazzi in his time):
“He’s the nicest guy I’ve ever met,” says Tom of McFly.
“You are the nicest guy we’ve ever interviewed,” say countless disc jockeys.
“He’s even nicer than I am,” admits Mother Teresa.
Okay, I made that last one up.

I admit that sometimes I wish he would do something mildly reckless, like get a speeding ticket or rip the "Do not remove" tag from a pillow, but that feeling usually passes as soon as I smile myself silly through one of his vlogs.
As one of my English teachers used to say, “I hate the word nice. It’s such a bland, benign word.”
Bland? Benign? How could either word ever be used to describe David Archuleta? He’s fierce, passionate, electric onstage and quirky, charming, fascinating off. But nice? It’s one of those words that damns you with faint praise — like saying a blind date has a “good personality.” Code for forgettable, dismissable.
In the music world, nice just doesn’t sell records. Dangerous, mysterious, even chopping-your-own-hair-off crazy sells records. Nice? Not so much.
Do I want David to stop being so nice? Ohmyheck, no. In fact, I don’t want him to change one nice teenage hair on his nice Mormon head.
He’s an artist with a golden gift, but his path to success will not likely be a smooth one. He has his own Goliath to slay — misconceptions and prejudices to overcome. But behind his niceness lies the heart of a lion — and it beats with strength and courage … and in perfect time.
Yes, David’s youth, faith and innate sunny disposition will likely continue to make him the butt of tabloid jokes and cause hack journalists to ignore his unparalleled talent … for now. Until, that is, he has that inevitable row of Grammys on his shelf and double-platinum records lining his walls.
For I have to believe nice guys can finish first. I believe in David.
— TOfan

what a great post on a perfect day. This line “But behind his niceness lies the heart of a lion — and it beats with strength and courage … and in perfect time.” describes our David exactly. This line alone made my day. thanks so much. Don’t miss the Lupe tribute video re run on snarky. such great memories.
Good morning everyone! And Happy Mother’s Day! Great post, TOfan, and everything you said is so true.
One of my friends won’t give David a chance because of his religion, and with the recent Prop 8 issue, in which many have blamed the LDS Church for getting that passed through, she feels entitled to vilify David’s faith.
As for the niceness, I still chock it up to marketing. A clever marketer can make David’s qualities marketable by avoiding adjectives like “nice” and using instead “smooth,” “intense,” “tender,” “divine,” “otherworldly,” or what have you. Because yes, your English teacher is right: “nice” is a bland word.
David is a heart soother, not a heartbreaker. Surely, you can market that.
OK, gotta run and get me to a church this Mother’s Day.
Have a great day, everyone!
ToFan loved your post. Happy Mother’s Day to everyone here.
David packs a punch with his humility and kindness!
He’s mesmerizing, fierce, passionate, encouraging, hopeful, joyful, calming, sensual, and genuine, as real as they get, humble, down-to-earth, and as far as I’m concerned the BEST thing to ever happen to us!!
Popping out of lurkerville for a moment to say GREAT article TOfan !!
“But behind his niceness lies the heart of a lion — and it beats with strength and courage … and in perfect time.” I love this line!
Thank you.
Have a wonderful Sunday / Mother’s Day everyone.
Ah, TOfan, you write like David sings!
I believe that good (nice) guys do finish first. Good guys are smart enough to keep a healthy balance in their life and don’t need messy drama to sustain their existence. The course they run is the high road and it just takes the “sound bite,” “adrenalin-addicted” public longer, in general, to recognize the good guys’ genius.
Kudos to all the good guys out there, the unsung heroes if you will, for living the courage of their convictions.
I believe.
TOfan, what a great post! Oh my!
I always remembered that David faced a lot more challenges than other contestants on AI 7, challenges that were not related to the AI contest, i.e., singing ability and likability. Yes, now I remembered. The elephant in the room was his religion.
That is why David is so amazing! In his young age, because of the career he has chosen, he is scrutinized in the public and he has to face down all these prejudice from the media. I just love calling David fearless. David embraces everything he is. He embraces his religion, his heritage and his values. He counters the world’s cynicism with openness, tolerance and kindness.
No, this nice guy will not finish last. Not this nice guy. This is no ordinary nice guy. This is David Archuleta. This nice guy has THE VOICE, beauty, and charm. He stirs up passion, makes people laugh, brings people to tears, erases boundaries separating people, unites people with simple love.
TOfan, I too believe David will finish first.
Such a treat yesterday to stroll down the memory lane for David Archuleta Day, here, and at various fan sites. I teared up a few times watching the videos. David is seriously loved by his fans.
peruu -- loved your post especially when you say this it touched my heart:
I just love calling David fearless. David embraces everything he is. He embraces his religion, his heritage and his values. He counters the world’s cynicism with openness, tolerance and kindness.

I came across an Adam Lambert interview yesterday. Adam was given a Mother’s Day surprise: his mom was sitting there waiting for him! Mom and son were then interviewed together. How sweet of the station to arrange something like that.
A thought came to my mind real quick. Oh how happy David would have been, if he was given a surprise like that! I think he would have cried.
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone. Happy Mother’s Day, Lupe.
Happy mothers day to all mother’s out there!
Great post!
In the end, yes, nice, humble guys come out on top! Without a doubt!
Waiting for Yesterday from Leicester.
It straightens out at the .58 mark:
Good morning all and Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mothers here!
TOfan Thanks for the post. Interesting point, David’s “niceness”. I suppose we may take for granted that it can only endear people to him -- the way it has us, along with the many other adjectives above that we us to describe David.
I too believe that David will prevail because he is no ordinary nice guy!
On this Sunday and Mother’s Day, we are including Mrs. Lupe Archuleta in our thoughts and greetings. In his CD, David thanks his Mom by saying: “You raised me to be who I am and have taught me so many things.”
If I were to meet Lupe at this time, I would give her and her family a huge “THANK YOU” for whatever it took -- all the hard work and much love over the years -- so us fans can have the privilege, and I really mean that… the privilege to hear David sing. I have a feeling, however, David believes it is the opposite — that to him, it’s an enormous privilege just to sing to us!
Although we really don’t know David personally, many of us have been to numerous shows and have viewed countless videos of his interviews and performances. One thing about him that we all see is his very giving and loving nature. Yes, David is nice… in an extraordinary and, to some, in a very unexpected way. I recall an interview where his Dad says David has always been this way! What a blessing for him and his family, for his friends and to us. I am grateful for David’s courage and tenacity to get the message of a song to us while literally baring his soul. He gives more, in melody and words, than we could ever return.
As many TDCer’s have said, there is a wonderful quality about David that simply captures our hearts. Besides his phenomenal voice, we see it from his smiles and in his eyes… and in turn by the expressions (all the smiles, laughs, and tears) we give to him. Also, although no other “instrument” is needed with David’s voice alone, I’m especially captivated by how much more he seems to smile when he accompanies himself on the keyboard. Besides what we hear, having his hands on the keys is another outlet for the heartfelt and soulful music that’s him. I hope David always keeps “Angels” in his repertoire. It is a beautiful song especially for today for all the Moms … and for everyone always. Through music, David’s happiness makes us happy…and vice-versa!
Finally, as David continues to sing and compose contemporary songs, I also hope he will release inspirational music. He will have his Lord to guide him with the musical selections combined with his own preferences. But, I think David will also consider the needs of others who are strengthened by faith and sacred music, and will give us his very best. After all, David has said that is all he can ever do… and he hopes we will like it! David is a nice guy! And, yes, he will finish first.
“He’s the nicest guy I’ve ever met,” says Tom of McFly.
“You are the nicest guy we’ve ever interviewed,” say countless disc jockeys.”
I chuckle every time I hear those words. It’s as if whoever gets in David’s orbit feels compelled to utter the words “nicest guy I’ve ever met”.
David called Liecester’s show AMAZING. Listen to this ZG. It was off the hook with changes!
Happy Mothers Day to all!!!
Love my “nice guy”. He warms my heart and can make me smile at any time of the day.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms here @ TDC and around the globe!! I must say that giving birth to my son proved to be MY defining moment! Lately it seems as though I am finding it difficult to discover any other identity for myself. I am aware that I shall always be a mom, but the challenge will be to “peel back some layers” and unveil those suppressed “egos” or “ids”. WOW….see what happens when I try too hard to be like all of you smart whips??!! I am pretty sure NONE of that made any sense whatsoever!
So much for “behaving”.
Valbraz: Thank you sooo much…..because behavin’ doesn’t look so good on me!
Now, I am actually going to comment on a post.
I enjoyed your post TOfan.
Tofan~love your article. I think David will prove to the world that nice guys can finish on top. Talent like his will not be denied and he is proving that, nice guy notwithstanding, he is dynamite in a small package. There must be room for nice guys to succeed in this world, I want to believe that. Stephanie Meyers has certainly attained great success with her phenomenal series Twilight, about a vampire so heart-stoppingly smexy and gorgeous, he makes you want to be bitten. Not the kind of content most would expect from an LDS writer. I think David will also astound and shatter some misconceptions. We actually have a very healthy appreciation of sex, and consider it a blessing from God. We are not prudes. You all know me better than that.
I do try to keep my horns concealed by wearing my hair full on top but sometimes I have a bad hair day and it’s not pretty.
TOfan,
Your post rings so true. I don’t’ know if all nice guys finish first, but this one will, because he is David Archuleta and he won’t be denied.
Off topic here, but can I talk about the fans? I woke up this morning with this little “Ode to the Fans” stuck in my head. I hope it’s OK that I share it under this post.
He grabs our heart and we say Don’t Let Go. He asks us how far we have travelled to see him, we say A Thousand Miles. We don’t know if we should reach out, he says Touch My Hand. We wonder if we can still jump like a child and he says there is Zero Gravity.
We feel anonymous and he says I Wanna Know You. We feel lonely and he says there is Somebody Out There. We feel down and he says he will Save the Day. We are in despair and he says please stop Falling. We ask him if AI is the right thing for him, and he says it Works For Me. We wonder what the future holds for him and he says Nobody Knows.
We note. We chronicle. We snark. We count his character. We analyze. We agonize. We fantasize. We let out a collective gasp when he forgets his lyrics and nod in communal approval when he wows the judge with DLTSGDOM. We worry when he runs by himself and we thank the people who provide him shelter.
We photograph, videograph, and recap his shows for those not lucky enough to be there. We have names for his jeans and moniker for his moves. We refer to his songs by acronyms. We know his hair.
We dress him and feed (make that spoon-feed) him. We buy balms to moisture his lips and scarves to warm his neck. We are his stylist, publicist, photographer, videographer, archivist, and scrapbooker. We are Team David. One of us draws cartoon characters with his likeness, and another one thousand of miles away bakes the cartoons into cupcakes and put them on his hotel bed.
We become experts on time zones and we know the names of small cities in Malaysia and Scotland. We learn Baju Melayu is a traditional Malaysian outfit and Marks and Spencer is a grocery store in UK gas stations. We know how he holds his chopsticks and that he does a mean head stand.
When he returns to AI, we huddle in anxiety. We speculate and debate the song he should and should not sing. He sings with nervous voice and we listen with nervous ears. He assures us he is alive and well afterwards and we assure him he does well.
We want to watch and talk about him 24/7. We learn to download and upload. We open so many cyber accounts we can hardly keep track of. We are sleep-deprived from youtubing, googling, and twittering. Our muscles go into atrophy from a lack of non-computer activity . We barely function in our real life –or what’s left of it. We spend a fortunate going to his concerts and endure stares from the non-initiated. We walk around like zombies afterwards because we miss him so. We become certified Demi Lavoto fans and we TiVo I-Carly and Hanna Montana. We did not bargain for this when we channel-surfed and heard him sing WFTWTC, Shop Around, or Imagine.
We are the mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and friends he does not know he has. We live in Portsmouth, UK, and Kuala Lumpur. We speak different languages and worship in different churches. Because of David Archuleta, we are One.
(TOfan and all TDCers, this is for you guys. You can see I am a fan of the fans.)
{{{Yjfanofdavid}}} that has got to be the BEST summation of our collective Arch Angel identity I’ve ever read so far.
Excellent commentary! Quote for the win!
TOfan-I really did enjoy your post. It just aches my heart that nice guys and gals do have a tougher time and an uphill battle. Seems as though the majority like the guy with an “edge”…the guy with a “naughty” side….the “rocker dudes”……..
but, I do believe in my heart that nice guys will always eventually end up on top.
It HAS to be that way -- it is what I have taught my son.
It pains me that David’s “niceness” IS and WILL lead to many a roadblock. However, I trust he will prevail.
I just adore Mr. David Archuleta!!
Ok guys…can I delete my last post? How lame compared to Yjfanofdavid’s!! Why did I have to follow THAT awesome post??
I feel like a balladeer on AI singing “Sailing” right after Adam Lambert singing……anything!
YJfanofdavid! Bravo! Absolutely loving every bit of your ode!
It’s like looking at ourselves in the mirror. So we are that silly, uhm…, and, that lovely…
Coming out of lurkdom to post my thoughts to Lupe on this Mother’s Day and about David’s niceness.
David’s niceness is part of the package of who he is and why we are drawn to him. It is a part of what keeps him humble in the craziness of his world. The rest of the world needs to be brought up to his standards of niceness, not the other way around. He doesn’t need to become someone else to sell records. The world is in the presence of the phenomenon of David Archuleta.
To Lupe on Mother’s Day: It must be very rewarding for you to see other people understand the special person that David is and know how he affects so many with his voice and who he is as a person. Hopefully that joy brings some comfort to you during the long times that you aren’t able to be with him. Just know how much he is loved and appreciated and that you have raised a fine man who will continue to change the world by being who he is. Thank you for sharing him with the world. Thank you for encouraging him to live his dream. Thank you for having the strength to live with what David’s fame must do to your family life. Thank you for being such a wonderful example of a compassionate and caring mom. You can see the joy in David’s face when he sings, and you can see the nostalgia in his eyes when he thinks of home and his family. You can be proud of David for so many things including that he is remaining humble and strong and caring about others even with his crazy fame. Thank you, thank you, thank you for seeing the gift inside David that inspires so many. His fans have his back. We are forever changed by David. We will support him forever. Thank you for sharing him with us.
“Could some of the very things we love about David…be stumbling blocks…?”
Unfortunately, yes. I’m w/HG #2. There are plenty more descriptors for David besides “nice”. Several months ago, The Defamer interviewed Kathy Griffin & they asked her about David. In her response, she never mentioned the words we often hear--nice, adorable and cute. She replied that his mind/thinking isn’t always “here”. David has even compared himself to the quirkyness of Jim Carrey and Robin Williams. I believe promotion of the quirky, divine, and otherworldly traits may help him reach a wider audience.

Everyone, enjoy the day! Thanks TOfan for such an interesting article.
Jello #20, My post is the one out of place here. I hope TOfan doesn’t mind. Today being Mother’s Day, I just felt like saying something about the fans’ nuturing of David.
Nancy, thank you for articulating what many of us feel about Lupe!
(*hugs HG back*)
Happy Mother’s Day to all mother’s with children and all others who perform mothering roles in some ways in their lives.
Great post!
I have given a lot of thought to the religious issue. I have to admit that it is hard for me to look past some aspects of David’s religion, particularly it’s “anti-” stance on gays, and I do wonder how long I can continue to look past it. The religion (I should clarify that, the particular rules and stances of his particular religion toward certain issues) is the one aspect of David that is off-putting to me.
David has always responded diplomatically to gay-related questions (he was asked once what he thought about Clay’s decision to come out), but I think it’s only a matter of time before a reporter directly asks him about his church’s stance on gays, and what he thinks, given that he has many gay fans.
I have been very open in the fan community about these questions that I have, and I’ve even gotten some nasty e-mails from people in David’s religion, but I think it’s healthy to have the discussion.
Nancy, coming out of lurkdom myself to say thanks for those beautiful, heartfelt Mother’s Day sentiments to Lupe! I hope she reads your inspirational words and is comforted to know that so many wish her and all the family well, and that we deeply appreciate their selflessness and sacrifices in sharing David with the world.
And to all the wonderful Moms and Grandmoms out there -- Happy Mother’s Day!!
TOfan, great post! I, too, believe our Mr. Nice Guy will finish first, in what David defines as “first”. It surely is not important to him to win over every last critic, no matter what the issue. And I don’t think David aspires to sit on top of the charts. To finish first, a win for David is to just continue to sing, write, perform and share his love of music with his audience -- no histrionics, gimmicks or flashy showmanship needed.
Of course, a Grammy or two or three along the way would surely be the cat’s meow!
Addressing the religious aspects, from what I can tell, David seems so genuinely inclusive of all people that I do not believe he espouses to every last doctrine of LDS. That does not in any way diminish his devotion to his faith. Just like the majority of us probably feel about our own faiths.
Happy Mother’s Day to all!
Great column TOfan!
“For I have to believe nice guys can finish first. I believe in David.” Me too!
I have friends and family who are strong Catholics.
Some of their siblings are very devout and faithful, following the teachings of their religion to the letter. And other siblings have chosen to completely disregard their Catholic upbringing and it plays no part in their adult life. And still others who believe strongly in their faith, but use it more as a guide than an absolute. There are teachings they agree with and follow, and others they do not.
I think peruu said it very succintley, “He counters the world’s cynicism with openness, tolerance and kindness.”
Zoe, just saw your post. Jeez, you verbalized my thoughts in 3 short sentences so much better than I in my rambling-on post. Thank you.
Freo, I appreciate your openness!
I thought David handled the Clay question genuinely and decisively. That was enough for me not to saddle him with what his church is doing.
I would like to end my comments with David’s favorite song. Let’s imagine he is singing it. Here is “Imagine”:
Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
*** Nothing to kill or die for ****
***** And no religion too ******
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
Zoe,
There is such a misconception about the LDS faith when it comes to gays. Just because my faith takes the position it does with the gay lifestyle does not mean that they tell me to hate all gays and to mistreat them. You words are written as if to imply that because I don’t agree with a gays lifestyle that I am unable to love, like, respect, be kind to or accept a gay person. That is just not true and David it not the rare example in my faith. He is not going againts the church doctrine because he is being kind and accepting.
emmiegirl -- haha! Thanks, but actually I loved your elaboration and thought you brought the point home beautifully!
~Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mom’s ~
~I thought you all might enjoy this ~
~Mark Harris ~ Find Your Wings ~
Happy Mothers’ Day!
YJFD #17, that was a very lovely tribute to David’s fans.
Nancy #22, I am sure Lupe would be very touched if she read your sweet, kind words to her. Thanks for delurking.
TOfan, I find it strange that we live in a time where being nice is considered a negative. It’s really hard to wrap my head around that. Fortunately for David, I think there are many, many who have no problem with him being nice because I think that he a lot of other wonderful qualitites as well. Nice is but one part of the total sum of David.
Zoe #27, “To finish first, a win for David is to just continue to sing, write, perform and share his love of music with his audience…” Exactly.
Can a Nice Guy Finish First? David has just finished his FIRST cd, his FIRST solo tour, his FIRST visit to Asia, and his FIRST support tour for one of the most successful bands in the UK. I would have to say yes, this nice guy is finishing a lot of FIRSTS and is now getting ready to start on his NEXTS.
As far as his religion, I’m not really sure what the big deal is about. Don’t other people have religions. This is who he was when I searched the internet to learn everything about him, it was no secret. This is his private life. I don’t recall David ever trying to push his views on to anyone. I have embraced David as he is. I don’t expect him to change for me no more than he should expect me to change for him. We are who we are, like it or leave it.
I’m enjoying reading every comment, thanks, guys. (Yjfanofdavid, don’t mind at all, loved your ode!) HG, is it possible to market “nice”?
Freofan, I appreciate your honesty very much. And Angelica and tessielynn, your perspectives are eye-opening. I love that we may all come from different countries, backgrounds and beliefs, but can congregate here and share unique views on things. And that we are all united in our passion for David’s music.
When I talk to people who aren’t David fans, they seem to cite only non-musical reasons for why they just aren’t that into him. Everything from his age and “awkwardness” (their word) to his religion, and even that he’s too nice, meaning they don’t think he’s sincere.
When that happens, I sometimes catch myself trying to defend him. Then I stop and realize how ridiculous that is. David laughs all that off and goes right back to focusing on what matters — his music. He’s clearly much more mature than I am.
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! And most especially to Lupe! (What a wonderful tribute to her, Nancy!)
Rumor has it that David delivered the pizza on stage to McFly. If true, hope there’s video of it.
TOfan: Of all you said, this is what I take away --
“Do I want David to stop being so nice? Ohmyheck, no. In fact, I don’t want him to change one nice teenage hair on his nice Mormon head.
He’s an artist with a golden gift, but his path to success will not likely be a smooth one. He has his own Goliath to slay — misconceptions and prejudices to overcome. But behind his niceness lies the heart of a lion — and it beats with strength and courage … and in perfect time.”
David displays what I think of as a true Christian nature. Not Mormon, not Catholic, not Baptist -- these are variations on a theme, and sometimes can become dogmatic. I don’t see that in David. I think that his deep caring and acceptance of others is what many mean when they use “nice” as their adjective of choice. David converts nice from Vanilla to Rocky Road. There’s more stuff in that word when used to to describe David.
YJfanofdavid: Wow, that is such a fantastic description of David’s fans. Depth, breadth and diversity.
Jello: Your sweet love notes to David and this community are joyful. Don’t take away that joy by being self-conscious. Don’t take back what you say, because you say it purely and from your heart. Just go with it.
Finally, Happy Mother’s Day!
goboywonder, #34, “I find it strange that we live in a time where being nice is considered a negative. It’s really hard to wrap my head around that.”
Believe me, it’s hard for me too. But when I step away from the fan sites to see how David’s being perceived in the big wide world, it’s a bit like culture shock … as if we live in Oz and everyone else is in Kansas.
I prefer Oz, of course, but still want to know what’s going on back in the black-and-white world.
For the record, I’m Black and straight. From what I’ve read, the majority of the Black community supported the passing of Prop 8 — perhaps due to their religious beliefs.
It would concern me if the media expected David to make a statement on Prop 8 while some of the Black singers w/strong ties to the black church are given a free pass. I’m using this as an example because it’s what I know best. But I believe you could substitute “black” w/one or more religions, ethnicities, etc.
In my opinion, when Tom of McFly or any of David’s peers say that David is “nice”, it is meant to describe a person having genuine qualities…a person who is not pretentious, superficial or duplicitous. They know “nice” when they see it, which is all too rare in the music world.
The word “nice” as applied by David’s peers is the recognition and admiration for someone who embraces humanity the way he embraces his “avocation”…with a lot of love and affection (passion)…unadulterated and pure -- free from what vitiates, weakens or pollutes; containing nothing that does not properly belong; and having exactly the talents or skills necessary to fulfill his destiny.
David provides a ready assurance that one will not be judged or faulted or debased or otherwise be invalidated. His certitude is founded in his Faith which is not capable of proof; and manifested in his God-given gift for music, among other things.
Perhaps David’s peers and others in the business use the word “nice” simply because, like most of us, they are either unable to or do not feel the need to fully and adequately articulate their impressions of David’s defining qualities and character…”nice” simply says it all. In this context, David will never be “too good for his own good”.
I believe that David’s passion for music is an “avocation”, because when all is said and done, his passion for music will always be subordinate to his Faith. For his fulfillment is ultimately found in pleasing his God…and part of that pleasure is derived when sharing his gift with others -- through performance and charity.
Consequently, for David, Faith will never be a stumbling block; he is comfortable with the reality of “who” he is, not “what” image someone else wants to project; and his real reward will be much loftier than the inevitable industry trinkets.
Finally, whenever I have watched a movie, listened to a CD, etc…I do not ever recalling any concern with a performer’s belief system, religious or otherwise.
Here is my thoughts on nice. Nice equates to weak in our world. However, nice with a track record, a body of work, no matter the discipline, is creating something rare and wonderful with dignity, respect, grace…where no one was walked over, push down, or dissed. This is the path of a peaceful warrior. Nice with great works, genius, artistry, is the ultimate human pinnacle to achieve.
As far as religion or any other difference for that matter, we are all human and have our strengths and our foibles. We define ourselves by who we are, what we believe and what we hold dear. We show our humanity by embracing others for who they are, respecting what they believe and what they hold dear.
I think in many ways that is also the hallmark of motherhood. We love our children no matter who they are, what they hold dear and what they believe. Love is the universal truth.
Happy Mother’s Day.
deserat -- thanks so much for that perspective, great point.
bigsky -- wow, love your post.
Tofan,
Thanks for this. It’s beautifully written and thoughtful. David is so much more than the word nice, but people using that word are just scrambling for A word, any word that will describe his goodness. There is nothing wrong with that.
p.s. When I was “the new girl” at my job, I overheard someone talking about me. No one ever seems to like the new person. The name I was called was “Pollyana”. I let it roll off me.
Six months later she was singing Happy Birthday to me, loudly.
Being nice ain’t half bad.
I agree, Kizzi. Niceness with longevity, or the “track record,” is what definitely gains more respect. On first site, in our culture, I think niceness makes people question its genuineness. How many times did I read comments from people who thought David was “faking” his niceness?
Now, here is a gift to everyone for Mothers Day!
Seriously, I know everyone has seen this, but I watch it every day. By now I can even tune out the screaming and Kendra’s off-key singing. THIS is my secret shame!!!
TOfan -- N.I.C.E.
YJfanofdavid~Your ode to the fans made my heart swell 5 sizes this special day. This nice guy brings out the best in everyone he touches. I truly believe David’s fans are some of the best people in the world. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and to Lupe, for David. He so obviously adores his mom. So in his last tweet he wishes all a happy mother’s day too and I did not know tonight was his last show! Wow. He was terrific in the UK and I’m just so proud of him.
bigsky~come over here and let me give you a big {{{hug}}}
I love this wonderful, diverse, accepting, irreverent, fun community here at TDC.
So someone fill me in… does David/band come home before Manilla. Are they all going or just David and Ray? Surely he wouldn’t do an hour set without the band. I’m sure he’s going to be happy to see Cook.
Hmmm…all these comments about his religion being the elephant…I agree. It should not be an issue, but sadly I think it is. I think that is part of the reason AI did not want him to win. They could have thought it would restrict him from doing what they wanted him to do…be a puppet…anything for money. His personal beliefs or anyones should never be an issue. Does not take away from the fact he is amazingly talented guy. In response to the “nice” factor…I think the media and others just simply still do not know how to describe him. The music industry is such a tough business and it seems the more outragous someone is the better they do. The more meaningless and over the top the music is the better it does. Many have said when they meet David how he affects them. Some have said he affects them spiritually and emotionaly, or however you want to describe it. All the media can come up with is that he is “nice”. I sincerely think they have never meet anyone like David before, and therefore do not know how to respond or how to describe him…hence the “nice” word. There is more to David than just being a nice guy. Many of you can come up with better words to describe him than the media has. I for one will be glad when that day comes when he is respected in the music industry, reconized for his talent, and be rewarded for it. David has a long road ahead of him and he seems committed to this journey. The major step in him being where we all know he deserves to be is by promotion, radio air play, and most important…winning an award.
Also, I thought he did a great interview on the Paul O’Grady show. Although with the appearance of McFly on the show, Paul said described David as being “innocent”…which I didn’t agree with. He said when he mentioned them taking off their clothes in previous concerts that David was like “Oh really”? The interview I saw David just laughed and said they had not done that on this tour. Maybe I need to go watch the video again…maybe I was wrong.
Wow, TOfan! What a great article!
This part makes my heart a little heavy because I believe it to be true:
‘Could some of the very things we love about David — his childlike wonder and adorkable innocence, even his famous niceness and humility, be stumbling blocks for winning over a wider audience?”
I think I speak from experience cause David is the only ‘nice’ guy I’ve ever fallen in love with. And that only happened cause he’s supernaturally magical!
I’m the kind of person who can always find redeeming features in a villain, just because I need an excuse for my fatal attraction to them. I watch Smallville and fall for Lex Luthor -- he’s charming, sexy and dangerous. I’ll take Lost’s Sawyer, the baddie with a mellow heart, over Jack any day, for I can’t stand guys with a hero complex! The first boy I fell in love with was punching another student in front of the school while a crowd cheered. As I watched the scene, the young boxer had me transfixed, under a spell. That’s how anti-nice I am!
However, here I am -- a rabid Archangel. I couldn’t help it.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that David will attract thousands upon thousands of fans with his sweet nature whether they like it or not. All resistance is futile!
See, Jello. I’m not ashamed of rambling! Ha ha
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, especially to Silverfox, our most loving, among loving mothers in this community. God bless you!
TOfan…This was a most enjoyable writing about a wonderful guy.
Freofan…I am wondering why the issues concerning “gay” and David and his religion concern you so often? His personal religious beliefs basically are none of our business and we go too far thinking that we have any rights to discuss them We should take the music and his love of people and whatever else that he gives and be appreciative. Why is it our right to invade his privacy over and over again? He asks nothing of us and gives everything of himself therefore the least we can do is enjoy and talk about his music and leave anything else alone. It is like we have the rights to all that he is and believes in. We have no boundaries it seems.
Kizzi: great post!
“I think in many ways that is also the hallmark of motherhood. We love our children no matter who they are, what they hold dear and what they believe. Love is the universal truth.”
If only that were always true. I was at a fundraiser last night for scholarships for gay and lesbian students run by an incredible organization with chapters around the country. The recurring theme for most of the students they help are high school graduates wanting to get into college but when they came out to their parents, were shown the door and told in no uncertain terms, you are no longer welcomed here and will absolutely get no help from us (the parents). It was heartbreaking to hear the stories of family rejection from some of the most brilliant young people I have ever met. How a mother or a father can look a son or daughter in the face and tell them to get out of their lives just for being gay is incomprehensible to me. Yet it happens thousands of times over every day.
tessielynn: I know I’m at risk for even commenting on your post but I gotta tell you…there is no gay lifestyle. I got up this morning, had breakfast, went to work, went to the grocery store, will cook dinner soon and then probably watch tv tonight. Tomorrow will probably be more of the same. Nothing gay about any of that. We know that most religions teach hate the sin but not the sinner. God created me just as he did you but he just happened to make me gay and I thank him for that because it isn’t a choice, nor learned…it is God given. Telling someone that they are not equal to you goes a bit beyond mistreating in my book.
I know that David is well above all of this and that his acceptance of all goes deeper than most people see even now. He is still very young and has a lot more of life to experience. He will always be true to himself and will continue to grow as time goes on.
SB, you asked why I bring up the gay issue and David and religion sometimes. I am passionate about this issue because I have seen gay people go through needless pain and rejection because of religion. I am not from an LDS background, but from another religion background that has similar beliefs about sexuality.
Hello everyone! I just returned from my daughter’s where she & my sons made me a most delicious dinner..all my favorites!
I wanted to stop in for a bit and I think I came in maybe at the wrong time, huh?
Anyway, I wanted first to let TOfan know I really loved your post and I DO believe the Genuine nice guys like David can & do finish first.
jyfan#17..OH MY! I don’t have words! Your post is so accurate, it’s down right scary, yet comforting to that we all are going through the same thing and we are not alone.
Bigsky, I too, when I listen to a CD, or watch a movie, have never wondered what the singer’s or movie star’s religion or beliefs are. That would be pretty ridiculous.
Valbraz, Thank you for your greeting. I appreciate it so much!
Mikesd..What you said..about a parent turning their back on their child is so heartbreaking. God bless the children who are misunderstood and rejected and you for being there when their parents are not, because some of these children can not & do not survive. Also the way you described your day pretty much describes my day every Saturday with the exception of watching TV..I’m on the computer doing you know what!
David is or will be on his way to conquer another country towards world domination. This time it’s the Philippines.
It’s already 2:30 AM where David is and I hope he is sleeping peacefully. He did good in the UK..so good! He should be proud as we all are of him. I love David for making this Mother’s Day very different from the last several years. I don’t even know why and don’t want to try to analyze why I am at peace now because of David. I just know I am. So for David…
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Watch over him, protect him from all harm. Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path. Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give. Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him UNCONDITIONALLY as we, his Archangels do. Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being. Give him rest when he’s weary. Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace. Give him assurance when he feels doubt. Give him joy when he feels sad. Cloak him always in your protective arms during this time on his journey. Keep David and HIS VOICE healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born. Please Lord, give us, David’s unconditional forever fans, the wisdom to know when to say no as well, especially when we want so much to do right by David. Open our eyes and help us in the way we support David so that it’s always in his best interests. Continue making his journey to the Philippines a SAFE & happy one and all he hopes for and deserves! May his positive and good Karma continue to attract those with positive and good Karma! May he continue to encounter goodwill and happiness! May he continue to be healthy and strong throughout his journey in the Philippines. Though we may be unworthy, we humbly pray. Amen
David, keep with you all our love, prayers and warm thoughts! Take care of yourself! We miss you badly, and will always love you madly!
I’ve been gone since Fiday with no David contact. I come back to seeing and listening to Zero Gravity at a level that HOLY WOWSY, CRAZY, OFF-THE-HOOK, MOLTEN HOT, GORGEOUS GROWN-UP, WHERE IS THE DAVID WHO I JUST SAW 2 DAYS AGO BLAZIN’ PERFECTION?!
I just might not be able to wait until August…
angelofdja..ME TOO! ME TOO!!
angelofdja, assume you saw the Leicester videos? I love your use of adjectives! Our balladeer is a bonafide hawt rock star.
emmiegirl,
WHEW…honestly somebody should have given me a warning about Leicester!
He is really so smart. He says he wonders what we think about him on stage and then he decides to “let it go”. And holy crap does he do that and then some. I can’t stop grinnin’!
I am out-the- door to work, but just wanted to say that I am developing quite a soft and loving spot in my cold, cold heart for this place and all of you. Just saying….
Have a great night TDC sharing in the love of David.
Oh! Desertrat: I love the cheerfulness of your avi! It lifts my spirits.
Goodness SF, my post came right after your prayer.
I am blushing…
angelofdja, have you seen any others or just ZG? TMH and WFY will not disappoint.
And then the Angels… and the crowd singing. What an incredible evening for him!
So, according to David’s tweet, he’s heading to Philippines tomorrow. So glad his UK tour was successful.
G’nite all!
You know what I love? That there is such a diversity of readers and commenters here -- that we all are together on one thing -- David. That’s the whole point, here, isn’t it? David gathers us all together, different races, religions, orientations, and probably a lot of other differences we don’t even think about. And we all hoot and holler at his performances, get teary-eyed when he sings Angels, and laugh at his endearing qualities and humorous come-backs. He has an amazing ability to unite us all.
marlie-amen.
mikesd #53 -- Gah, it’s heart-breaking that those kids have to go through that. So much needless suffering. As a parent, it is completely incomprehensible to me that a mother’s love could be conditional. We are who we are. I know too many painful stories of friends from several different religious backgrounds where they were denied their right to be who they are. We are all God’s children. Each of us should be allowed to love who we want with dignity.
Yjfanofdavid #17 -- Sorry I am so late with this but someone else mentioned your post so I wanted to go back and read it.
Just want to say what a beautiful post and SO TRUE, SO TRUE, all of it!! I really loved how you worded it.
YJfanofdavid #17 -- I love the creativity that David inspires. You’ve really outdone yourself here!!
Marlie, me too, AMEN!
YJfanofdavid #17, how I would love to wear your ode on a T-shirt! (a really loooong one, lol) LOVE it!
Can a Nice Guy Finish First?
Hmmm.
Finish is defined as follows:
(intransitive v.) to come to an end; to end relations; to end a competition;
(transitive v.) to bring to an end; to use or dispose of entirely; to bring to completion; to defeat or ruin utterly or finally.
Finish may stress completion of a final step in a process.
Based on the above, and with David in mind, I hope not…I wouldn’t mind if he ever finishes…too much good stuff.
Just another way of looking at it. I know…weird or should I say ODD.
Peace
Nice is often used dismissively when speaking of David. I think it has as much to do with his youth, as his religion. I think both ways undermine who he really is.
Just as using sexuality to define Adam Lambert is wrong, using religion, or niceness to define, and dismiss David is wrong. Certainly most must see that David is certainly more than a quiet, nice Mormon boy.
I however, don’t want him to take a walk on the wild side, or have to do something weird in order for folk to take notice of him. I hope that he continues to slowly, but surely build up a body of work that will be what defines him. He has time, and he has the ability to turn many around.
Although David is a devout Mormon, I don’t think that he necessarily agrees with every thing that goes on in his church. David seems to be a non-judgmental young man, and I think he is a lot more inclusive than many would imagine. Just as I can’t blame all Catholics for the many ills of their Church, or Islam, or Judaism and Christianity at large, I can’t blame David for his Mormon affiliation.
YJ Love your post #17! So so true!
However, I like to believe David knows we’re here:
“We are the mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and friends he does not know he has. ”
Almost caught up above!
What a great read this thread has been. Thank you to all of you who stepped out and shared your thoughts and experiences about David’s religion and gave new insight and views about being gay.
I recently became very good friends with a female colleague who is gay. She has fast become one of my closest friends and the learning curve is staggering. Next to David, my new friend is one of the most intriguing people I have encountered in my 45 years. I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying all that David and his “people” (you guys here!) have brought to my life!
Oh boy!
“We are sleep-deprived from youtubing, googling, and twittering. Our muscles go into atrophy from a lack of non-computer activity . We barely function in our real life –or what’s left of it.”
Got to be up in 4 1/2 hours!
Tofan -- great food for thought post -- makes me think about my stance on the issues addressed. Which is difficult to be definitive on, as I am one of the weak ones who can’t make up their minds because I have a tendency to follow David. Also loved that you replied to the writer of the article. Make her take responsibility for what she puts out there as her “truth”.
HG#2 -- love this descriptive “David is a heart soother, not a heartbreaker.”
Kizzi#5 -- “Good guys are smart enough to keep a healthy balance in their life and don’t need messy drama to sustain their existence.” Oh, so true….
Peru#6 -- your comments rang so true. Especically this “He counters the world’s cynicism with openness, tolerance and kindness.” and this….. “He stirs up passion, makes people laugh, brings people to tears, erases boundaries separating people, unites people with simple love.”
Thanks to David, “Nice” is no longer a curse word. It’s a quality to aspire to, reach for, and achieve. It no longer means ineffectual, wishy washy or needy.. David is both nice and fearless, warm and dynamic, accepting and challenging, friendly and mesmerizing. He has shown in the past year that you can have as many positive qualities as the depth of your character will allow, without compromise or apology. He is the most graphic example of the potential of a human being I have ever seen, and that potential has not even come close to its fullness.
If David is “nice”, then it’s good to be nice. People need to be more like David. “Nice” is a good start.
rapture…thank you so much for your comments! You made my day… Bottom line is that we are all here for such a short time and we should use that time to really be human to one another, a la David A. I try to live by example and feel that in all of my years have been able to show so many people that being gay is only one aspect of my life. I have so many straight friends who consider my partner and me to be a part of their lives and families. We have been together nearly 29 years and our relationship has outlasted many of our straight friends. They don’t hold it against us though!!
Thank you for embracing your new friend…I’m sure she is happy to have you as a friend. That, to me, speaks volumes.
Angelica# -- “I do try to keep my horns concealed by wearing my hair full on top but sometimes I have a bad hair day and it’s not pretty.” That is hilarious!!! Thanx for the levity in your humor. Just wish the face would have copied, too.
Yfandofdavid -- as HG said ” that has got to be the BEST summation of our collective Arch Angel identity I’ve ever read so far.” thanx for giving us an identity. You are a true fan of his fans (Me too!!!) -- a clan that is growing every day. Hope it’s ok but I copied & saved to my files (credit given to you, of course). Maybe this can be included on this site, somewhere.
djxox -- thanx for the vid. I’m saving for tribute vid for grandkids.
YJfod,
What a fantastic, FANTASTIC,WELL-WRITTEN ODE!
This should be on a poster, t-shirt, or coffeemug.
Fabulous read!
TOfan -- Sorry I’ve been MIA lately, I’ve been required to devoted my energies elsewhere, but I just wanted to say what a rich and insightful article you have bestowed upon us.
I do think there are definite risks associated with an artist who chooses to break no rules. The religious conventions into which David was indoctrinated, and to which he has claimed to be quite devoted, sets up a paradigm of conformity that, if left unexamined and unquestioned, will almost certainly compromise not only his audience appeal but very likely his artistic growth. I’ve said this from the very beginning. But I don’t think this necessarily has anything to do with being “nice,” or being a gentleman. I think David has every opportunity to make that aspect of his persona become extremely cool.
Good morning everyone! Rascal! So good to hear from you.
David being religiously devout in a secularized world just might allow him to be a non-conformist in non-traditional ways. You just never know how and in what directions David will develop his artistic growth.
The few things we’ve glimpsed of David -- open-minded and open-hearted, non-judgmental, eclectic music tastes, etc. -- indicate that his religious devotion might be in moderation and not the extremist kind. And the fact that he already thinks his music-making is from divine inspiration (and it certainly helps that many of his fans think this as well) means he will take his artistic growth very seriously.
At least that’s how I see it.
I love this.
Starts around 4:00.
Tom: We want to thank David Archuleta for coming on tour with us. He’s the loveliest, loveliest, most talented guy. And it’s been a real pleasure.
Harry: Talking to David Archuleta is like doing yoga. It’s really calming. He has a calming influence. So thank you David.
Tom: I think Harry secretly fancies David Archuleta.
Harry: No. He just has got really really good hair.
Tom: Who David Archuleta?
Dougie: Best hair I’ve ever seen!
Harry(I think or else Dougie): It’s silky.
Rascal!! You know we hold to your every word, right? — even when we don’t’ always agree with you. I concur with HG on the following:
“The few things we’ve glimpsed of David -- open-minded and open-hearted, non-judgmental, eclectic music tastes, etc. -- indicate that his religious devotion might be in moderation and not the extremist kind”
I also feel the diverse views on some of the more “controversial” subjects enrich our discussion, provided we all speak with respect and a lack of judgment toward each other. Right?
LIZ, joymus, fanda, Angelica, Thank you for your encouraging words for my rather lame attempt at a tribute to the fans . The funny thing is, I am terrible with words and the least creative person I know of. I have never been a fan of anyone or anything. Heck, before David burst into my life completely unexpected, I don’t even listen to music all that much. I have ODD because I don’t think I really H.E.A.R.D music until a 16-year-old with crazy just-roll-out-of-bed hair sang that first fatal note from Waiting For the World to Change. I am inspired by all of you and by your love for David AND for each other. The fantastic writing here enlightens my mind, as much as David’s music soothes my soul. If some of you find the tribute approximate what you feel, please consider it collectively written by all the die-hard fans here in the TDC.
Oops. I meant “hold on to”
betsy…Thank you for keeping us updated this morning. It is so good to also incorporate the latest videos and news at this time as everyone is antsy I am sure to know firstly about the finale.
refnaf…I believe that this is your birthday today so if I am correct (oh, I am known to be incorrect at timeas) then “Happy Birthday” this is a very special day for you and may there be many more wishes coming your way…
“Talking to David Archuleta is like doing yoga. It’s really calming.”
Wow! Thanks for sharing, Betsy.
And this is why words like “nice” inevitably fail to capture the essence of David. Such a description is NOT the impression a merely “nice guy” makes.
I officially love McFly right now.
Happy Birthday, Refnaf!
Off to work right about now. Until next time!
BTW, cannot wait for David to reunite with Cook in the Philippines. I have a feeling Cook will need David’s calming influence right about now.

GOSH!
mikesd – 29 years! Congratulations, my friend. Bravo for having the courage to speak up when it would have been easier to be silent. You said it beautifully:
“We are all here for such a short time and we should use that time to really be human to one another.”
And as chenson said in the last feature:
“(David) unites people who would possibly never have crossed paths otherwise, pulling people from all corners of the country and planet, all to share that gift that he brings to the stage.”
Rascal – I agree that there are risks to not breaking rules. Isn’t part of the definition of an artist someone who creates new ways of doing things, and of necessity, must break the mold to do that? Isn’t a creative artist someone who trusts their own heart and mind more than any of society’s constraints?
As David travels and interacts with a wide variety of people on his own, he may shift and change. Heck, he may even have a rebellious phase as so many of us did. It will be interesting to see.
And after all the speculation about how David and McFly would match up, it seems that the McFly boys actually appreciate David, not only his “silky hair,” and “yoga-calm” inducing presence, but his “magical voice” as well haha!
I pray, with every fiber of my being, that David is “successful” enough to keep making music, meaning that he is either signed to a label, or has enough money to go independent. I want to hear new music from him for the rest of my life. This is my selfish desire. I want him to happy. Whatever that means for him.
As for those folks that like to “nice guy” and “mormon” him, they just don’t get it. I hope they do one day. But if they do not, please God, just let him keep singing, and let him be paid well for it.
FunnyGirl, I know what you mean. When I think about the possibility of David leaving the public eye and going back to performing locally (church stuff here and there), I seriously feel a pang of mourning. I know that is a bit selfish of me. His path and truth may not be my version of things (and he is still so young), and he has mentioned a desire to explore medicine as a career, with music as a side thing. But I hope that I can keep hearing music from him in some capacity.
TOfan…. ah, wow beautiful post. love the way you responded to the Globe writer, haha.
“Bland? Benign? How could either word ever be used to describe David Archuleta? He’s fierce, passionate, electric onstage and quirky, charming, fascinating off. But nice? It’s one of those words that damns you with faint praise — like saying a blind date has a “good personality.” The fact that David gets “written off” because of his niceness is such an indicator of where we are as a society IMO. People like to see the dirt, hence all the reality type drama shows. Trash seems to sell.
The religion aspect is a big elephant for some. I have gotten to a point where I can seperate my religion from my faith in God. How we work out our path to God in our religion (which is man made) should not be a hindrance to others. Judgement of others religions is where the probs come. David keeps his religion out of it, but his belief that his gift is God given is always evident in how he lives out his life. I’m sure he will go through some tough times sorting it all out, as do we all.
Catching up on this post has been has been so uplifting. Thank you all. I want to comment on so many!!!
angelica #16. lol to the horns!
Mike, sad to think kids get rejected, but it happens so much , even for other issues. I know of pregnant teens being rejected as well. How can this be? I think for many parents it is all about how they think it reflects on them. A loving God rejects no one. thanks for sharing!
YJF #17 That fan tribute …. wow, just wow, spot on… and so perfectly said.
thanks for the birtday wishes… You all are the best….
oh my lovely betsy .. Thank you my love

This by far.. is absolutely making me giddy. How wonderful to see (yet again) David.. and his affect on people. Maybe in time.. all the world will have a chance to talk with David.. and they’ll be peace on earth.
oh David.. be still my heart.. I’ll be forever taken aback by your inner beauty. (not that you’re not sweet on the eyes of course) ..just..awed..again..by something rare and beautiful that radiates out of you..that can’t quite be explained, but we so do love this about you.
Pizza is here!
Happy Birthday refnaf!
Freofan -- let us quickly banish the thought before I start to cry! God willing he will get to sing forever. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him.
Happy belated mom’s day to all of you moms….. I got a bicycle built for two…. hubby and I will have a blast, hahha
Freo and FG… I agree, I must be able to hear David’s voice …
My comments seem always to be misconstrued when I question the influence of his particular religious upbringing and its relationship to artistic growth and audience appeal. Specifically, I am frequently accused of wanting, somehow, for David to be “different than he is.” In fact, it is precisely the opposite. I want him to be more of who he is and less of what some church thinks he should be. It is the extremes of religious dogma that traditionally seek to exact conformity from individuality, to create obedience out of originality.
Maybe that’s one of the reasons I have been so offended by how Jive has treated him. In some ways, they are like just another church — the dogma of the music industry — seeking to leech out any sense of originality with so much abject conformity.
On the bright side, David is always the bright side. His nature — musical, spiritual, and otherwise — seems to glow like a clear beacon despite all of the nonsense into which it is submerged. Of course it was McFly who were influenced by David more than the other way around. Like yoga indeed.
A couple of months ago, I was flogged by some folks here for breaking an unstated taboo about David’s “personal life”. The fact is that everything about David is microanalyzed on this and other sites. Every head whip, hunker down, hand gesture, and blink of his eye is magnified, discussed and reacted to. David has become, much to his own surpried, a lightning rod for controvercy and social issues.
All heck broke loose when David showed up on stage in Duluth in an outfit that made Elvis look like Tiny Tim. The cat was put of the bag (I think that’s the expression). David was too sexy for his jeans, and wasn’t afraid to show it.
It’s all good. David is growing up in the public eye. Either we grow up with him or get passed by. In less than one year, he has become a stage perfomer the likes of which we have not seen since Michael Jackson was crowned the “king of Pop” in the early ’80s. He is beyond fantastic as a singer and his dynamism and sensuality can be appreciated by anyone of either gender at any age.
David is breaking down old, worn out stereotypes that men have been living with forever. He is a new kind of man, comfortable with being “nice”, without diluting his “manliness”. I’ll repeat what I said 2 months ago. “Vive La Revolution”.
When people use the word “nice” as a way to describe David, the term “nice” is used as a superlative: as in “He truly is the nicest person I’ve ever met”. Will compliments like this help David garner new fans? Who knows. All I know is that in the circus world of the entertainment industry, the likes of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, et al.. seem to rule the day. David may be a reluctant “celebrity” but it is all part of the deal. What he brings is a freshness, a genuine goodness, and a beautiful voice to an industry that does not usually thrive on such. Each day I wonder how is it that more people don’t make the connection that we all have made with David. I know this is just the beginning, and given time, David will carve out his share of the public’s attention, adoration and admiration. So, David Archuleta, you just keep going about your business, do the things that you do and everything will fall into place.
Rascal --
yes!
Bliss -- I agree -- I hope he will set the standard for the new cool. He does in my book anyway.
Speaking of stage presence:

I SO want to.. but I SO wont
New dictionary definition of “nice” starting @ 1:44
Oh, I love those McFly boys! My current fantasy is a fall US Tour with McFly opening for David Archuleta!
I shouldn’t, and said I wouldn’t.. I see the train coming..and I’m tied to the tracks.
Rascal.. nothing you’ve ever said has been misconstrude, at least not by me. I understand exactly what is is you’re saying.
All of the things mentioned above..WILL.. absolutely..continue to gauge David’s popularity.
He absolutely..throughout his entire career.. will carry the preconceived notions about who he is, and what he represents. He won’t be able to change it, but he will be able to overcome it.
As much as we’d all like to jump up and down.. and think David is going to change the face of the landscape.. it’s not likely to happen.
The fine lines between pop culture and the music industry are forever blown to pieces. They are all.. one in the same now.
FANS.. FANS with ODD.. will always GET him, wil always embrace him unconditionally, and support him in the same manner.
Will he ever win OVER those folks..that have an aversion to his faith, his beliefs, his morals or his values?
No… because those things … create boundary lines… most of which will not be crossed…because society as a whole, will not “compromise” their individual beliefs to give him a chance.
For all this.. he’ll do well, he’ll be happy, and he’ll enjoy doing what he’s doing…
But don’t expect him to change the moral compass…because #1. He can’t, and #2. It’s unfair to set that expectation on him.
I hope I’ve been able to add my two cents, while carefully skirting around issues I’m not comfortable addressing.
On an artisty level.. analyzing his stage presence, the growth of his performance skills, the leaps of faith he’ll soon undertake in song writing.. count me in. The REST.. I’m working VERY hard.. to remove myself from. Because I want to believe with every part of my being.. it’s none of my business…and should never matter.
Exactly bliss…
“The fact is that everything about David is microanalyzed on this and other sites. Every head whip, hunker down, hand gesture, and blink of his eye is magnified, discussed and reacted to.”…but would you not say that all of the above are gestures from David that are a part of his performing and they are universally loved, adored and consequently written by David admirers and followers?
Then we have the following statement:
“David has become, much to his own surprise, a lightning rod for controversy and social issues”.
Now you are talking about David in perhaps ways less becoming possibly to some and in ways I can safely say he would rather we did not focus on but spend our thoughts and actions on travelling with him in music and in helping others. Can we not leave all of the other to the journalists and not identify ourselves as being like some of those people? Simply placed, would his parents talk abut him in those ways or his good friends or other musicians? Can we not let it be? We draw attention beyond David as a wonderful person and performer and we bring on these discussions certainly not David. David himself can teach the world through his actions and our need to discuss him in whatever way we choose may be harmful.
Are we being friend or foe? We are always looking for more.
dawn65 -- don’t worry about saying what you feel. We all have very personal beliefs. You make a great point about not putting expectations on him. I have no faith that the essence of slime that pervades pop culture and music will erode anytime soon. Neither we, nor David can change that. I’m just glad he’s here, singing for whomever wants to listen.
Although dear rascal I am not a part of the writer’s guild, although I studied English at university, I have not been exercising any form of proper writing. (Say it rascal…”obviously”.)
But somehow I stumble through my replys with less then adequate writing ability.
I have always sensed your desire to see David moving in the channels that are most appropriate for him and of course there are many frustrations because it is difficult to watch Jive and not be critical.
He is fortunate to have someone who strongly sees and patiently waits for the day to come when he has passed all of this and stands before his admirers accomplished in the way that he wants to be.
dawn65 & FunnyGirl…happy to see you as a good friend of David.
SB: Regardless of what others might talk about that you are uncomfortable with, I think everyone here is a good friend of David.
Marlie, I second that. We are all friends of David, and free speech is a beautiful thing. I think that David inspires people to think about different things. For some, it is music; for others, he brings to mind social, religious, and political issues. As long as the discussion is respectful and doesn’t specifically address his private life, all is good.
Interesting read and some great points made.
I think this goes back to what I talked about briefly in my article, perception of personality. For some reason in this day and age, a strong personality is someone of a rebellious type or someone who does or says outrageous things or dresses in an outrageous way. It separates you from the crowd. That is how David is different. When you meet him and talk to him, you realise that hes not bland, like the word ‘nice’ makes him out to be.
So much has been said about Davids personality, his character, heck theres even an entire site dedicated to it. I think as far as these interpretations you talk about it to do with his faith etc, well, the only thing David can be is David and he wont change for anyone. That is what matters. Like Adam in AI, David needs to be himself and stay by that religiously. Thats the only way he will be a success, regardless of how people interpret that.
Sandy, As long as David is treated with respect, I don’t think there is anything off limits to discuss about him. I know that I have the utmost respect and admiration for him, and would never harm a hair on that beautiful head of his. And yes, we are always looking for more from David. That’s because he’s always giving more, and has so much more to give.
Rascal, great post # 103. We’ve had our differences in the past, but not on this issue. McFly was no match for David, and became “Archufied” like everyone else.
betsy -- #43 -- hm, your “Pollyana” comment got me to thinking… I’ve been called that often, and I’m wondering if that—in addition to David of course!!—isn’t the tie that binds, here at TDC: a positive outlook on life. It does my heart good to see David demonstrate that goodness is a powerful attractor. Did anyone see Michael J. Fox’s special about optimism? Toward the end, there was a bit about the investigation into whether there might be a genetic component to the ability to see the positive—and they found that there was. Some people just naturally gravitate to the negative—they see that first and primarily. I’m guessing there aren’t many with that predisposition on this site. All of that said, it’s given me pause, and greater compassion, for those who don’t “get” David. They can’t help it—they’re built how their built. Oh well, I feel luckier than my previous luckiness, enjoying every bit of David’s goodness! ***Pollyannas FTW!!!***
SandyBeaches -- Thanks! Peace out -- gotta go to work!
As the saying goes, “Out of the mouths of babes, comes truth & common sense”..from Chenson who said..
“When you meet him and talk to him, you realise that hes not bland, like the word ‘nice’ makes him out to be.

Not that I think Chenson is a “baby”, however in years he is but a child as compared to the rest of us but he does make the most sense. David will forever stay true to himself. Whatever changes he goes through, and there will be many, he will do whatever his heart & mind tells him is right for him. As far as his “religion”, which to me is separate from his FAITH. We can have FAITH without religion. Faith is what you feel & believe inside your soul. David is young and just now is going out into the world, being exposed to different cultures and beliefs. We don’t know what David thinks or what his future relationship with “the church” will be as he continues to see the world. Perhaps he will be more ingrained into the LDS. Or not. At this point, we are the ones who see a potential problem with him being Mormon as far as gaining new fans. We are the one’s who have a need to discuss his “religion” when he doesn’t. One thing IMO, his FAITH in his GOD will always be his anchor, his guiding force. David will always stay true to himself. I believe that he has worked too long & too hard to let anything short of having a vision from his GOD telling him he should not sing anymore, stop him from doing what he was born to do. He will mature and grow in mind and also maybe in body
and as he does, I doubt he will let “the church” hold him back from where he wants to go in his career. David is stronger than we give him credit for. I am seeing it every single day. Who would have thought the boy who was crying at his homecoming at this time last year, would be just one year later, the explosive, sensuous stage presence he is today?Certainly not me! And if we are surprised at the speed with which he gained confidence in his performance and learned to just let go, his next album, I belive will be a real shocker!
Just checking in for the day. Such different perspectives based on our life’s experiences. Great discussion.
So interesting that what is said by one resonates with some and not with others. We have individual truths, subgroup truths, and, we all seek the universal truth (is there just one?)…what a fantastic journey and may it never end.
Chris -- you stated that David’s music and personality are tied, synonymous, in your article on “Spreading the Spirit.” I have been thinking a lot about that statement..thanks!
SF, O’ Great Wise One -- I so agree about David being strong. And, I think because he is comfortable in showing vulnerability that people hone on that rather than the strength it takes to be openly vulnerable.
Hey! Kizzi! Hope you had a great day yesterday!
From Snarky’s, here’s an phone interview David did last night..
It was Rhiza who arranged for Funfare the following exclusive phone interview with David A. It was 4 p.m. in the States and, according to David A. “almost midnight” in UK. He was tired, I knew, but he was very charming and engaging nevertheless.
Excerpts:
Your fans in the Philippines are waiting for you.
“Oh, I’m happy to hear that. I can’t wait to go to the Philippines.”
Anyway, David, what have you heard about the Philippines?
“I’ve heard that it’s very hot there.”
Aside from that?
“I’ve heard that there are a lot of amazing singers from the Philippines.”
Like who?
“My favorite is Regine Velasquez. She was actually the one who got me to be an even bigger fan of Mariah Carey because she was singing all those Mariah Carey songs that I’ve never heard before. ‘Wow.’ I said, ‘Regine is so good; she’s amazing’.’”
David, do you remember Ramiele Malubay, the Filipina who was with you and the other David in American Idol?
“Oh yeah, I remember her. Have you talked to her before?”
Yes, I did. That was in October last year in L.A. when I bumped into Ramiele during the concert of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes who are popular stars in the Philippines. Ramiele didn’t perform, she only watched the concert.
“Oh, really?”
What did Ramiele tell you about the Philippines?
“Oh, not much. Ramiele was always talking to her mom in Tagalog. She taught me a few Tagalog words.”
Did Ramiele make you taste Filipino food?
“No, she didn’t have a chance to do that. We didn’t have enough time to go to a Filipino restaurant.”
Don’t people mistake you for the other David, or vice-versa?
“Not really. Each of us is now into his own thing although not necessarily in different worlds.”
How has American Idol changed your life?
“Oh, very much! I won’t be in London now if not for American Idol. It has changed me in a way that I have never ever imagined. It has changed me so much. I went on an American Idol tour, I’m doing my own solo tour and now I’m doing my first solo album. So much in my life has changed.”
And now, the girls are all over you and the other David.
“I dont’ know. It’s something that I find weird. I just think of that as people who enjoy the music. I don’t think of it as girls being all over me.”
What type of girls do you find attractive?
“I like girls who can get along with people, who care about other people, who are fun and adventurous, who have a strong sense of self and who don’t put themselves down. That’s the kind of girl I am waiting for.”
Oh, you’re still looking for one.
“Not that I’m looking for one. My focus now is on my career, my work, and not on girls. “
David, you have been likened to Paul Anka. How do you feel about that?
“Oh, that’s cool! He’s a big star during his time, an icon up to this day. He has lasted this long and it’s an honor to be likened to him.”
What can we expect from your and the other David’s concert in the Philippines?
“Everybody will have a fun time. It’s our first show together and our first time to perform in the Philippines which has a soft spot in my heart. During the American Idol, I got so much support from Filipinos. They sent me gifts and stuff like that, and I really appreciate that and am very grateful to them for that.”
Do you plan to see other places in Manila?
“Do you have any suggestions?”
Well, you can visit the bars and do some girl-watching. There are a lot of beautiful girls in Manila.
“I talked to Enrique Iglesias yesterday and I couldn’t believe when he told me that he’s half-Filipino. He did tell me about the bars and stuff like that. But I’m not really the kind of person who goes to bars. I like parties but not all the time.”
How do you spend your free time?
“I listen to music. It’s still music for me. I’m a music freak.”
See what I mean..David stays true to himself, no matter what. No pretense, just David! That’s one reason I love him. He is the most “REAL” celebrity out there. We can believe what comes out of his mouth.
YJfanofdavid -- Thanks for delivering the pizza!! You rock -- seriously, loved your fan ode too! Big grins.
Sorry that I am not so wise and that I must be in a different society where privacy must be a rare privilege. Perhaps this place is best left to the people with the concept that all that is David is ours and open to discuss.
I will leave you to it. You have the floor.
bebe…Happy Birthday on the 15th…
“David, you have been likened to Paul Anka.”
WOW..
No..
Paul Anka?
Still..
No..
… also… poor David.. staying up late.. for those questions.
Really?
And now, the girls are all over you
What type of girls do you find attractive?
Oh, you’re still looking for one.
Well, you can visit the bars and do some girl-watching. There are a lot of beautiful girls in Manila.
Dear David.. I’m sorry.
None of us know where David’s path will lead him. This is what we struggle with. We all so badly want him to be happy, successful, taken seriously, (insert your wish here). I think we are the worrying kind. The deeply emotional kind. The passionate kind. The kind of people that commit fiercely. And love strongly. It takes a lot of energy to do this, day in and day out. We simply must try to enjoy what is here and now. I am a worrier, it is in my blood. I used to eat, drink, and sleep it. It has taken several years to come to terms with it. One of the main lessons I have learned on this ODD journey, is patience. David will have all of the success he is meant to have. And we will be there along the way, doing all we can to help and support him. We will do what we can, but the rest is out of our control. Hand wringing about Jive’s marketing, about how his 2nd album will be received, about the fact that he’s on a plane RIGHT NOW (don’t think I don’t know when he’s in the air -- it is someting to worry about!) none of this will do anything but rob us of precious time and energy.
All I have now is patience. I will wait. All will go according to plan.
SB …
Perhaps this place is best left to the people with the concept that all that is David is ours and open to discuss.
Why else do any fan sites exist?
One thing I have to point out, and I think it’s really important.. is that sometimes a certain “topic” .. is a hot spot…NOT because of David.. and sometimes, folks are tender in some areas.. and voice opinions about certain issues.
This should NOT be construed as projecting an opinion one way OR the other.. ONTO David.
With that being said.. the one may or may not feel about certain topics.. should be open.. without the assumption.. that it’s directly about David.
We are all FANS here. We all support him.
If someone says something that’s perceived as negative.. the little hairs on the backs of everyone’s necks stand up.
I’m don’t sway either way into the glass is half empty or half full. I have no glass. I’m one of those dreaded liberal people.. to each his own.. more power to you.. judge not least you be judged. If I feel like being optimistic.. great.. if I feel like being pessimistic.. great. Perception.. can not be altered. It is what it IS.. to each individual.
Just as David is strong in his own convictions.. so is everyone else.
Trust me.. I have VERY strong feelings about some of this.. but I choose not to discuss it here.. maybe because I feel it may be in appropriate.. maybe I’m just not brave enough.. but nonetheless.. I still have them.
SF -- Hi {{{{Waves}}}}} Had a fantastic Mother’s Day! My baby (22 yo) has taken up gardening and my yard is overflowing with plants & blooms of all varieties. While he is waiting to leave for grad school (end of July) he has put in a pond with a fountain, a fire pit, a vegetable garden with my fav veggies—for Mother’s day he put up a hummingbird feeder (those tiny birds are magical & gorgeous) and he cut some of his beautifully nurtured flowers and put them in a vase and put them on my desk yesterday in my home office.
SandyBeaches: At times I don’t agree with what is being said; it goes beyond my comfort zone and that helps me to look at different topics through broader lenses; sometimes I have very strong emotions about what is said. When I look at all the articles and threads and comments overtime, though, the cumulative body of information and discussion is something I can embrace.
Another gig for David?!! And it’s in NY.
http://www.pcrichardtheater.com/pages/main/
Also, as a reminder, there are policies for all posters under the Terms & Conditions link in the upper right. Not that I believe anyone was out of line.
SB..please don’t be offended for David’s sake. We all have one main focus and that is the love, admiration and the hope that only good touches David. We don’t always agree but as long as we have David’s best interests at heart, it’s all good. And I love the love you have for David.
FG..I try not to worry so much anymore…there is just something so positive about how David is only 18 and having the time of his life, living his dream. He goes to bed happy and wakes up happy. He never seems to be “bothered” about or by anyone. His positive outlook is contagious. I see all the photos where he is smiling and all I see a young guy who is happy with where he is in his life right now. BUT if I hear him cough, or sneeze, or if there’s another real or even a perceived “threat” to his wellbeing..then I may just go out of my mind with worry
Dawn..wish I had the will power to keep my mouth shut sometimes, but at my age..it’s kinda hard to change. I am getting better about “thinking” before hitting the submit key..didn’t used to do that..I would comment & hit that key and then I was like…NO, NO, No! Why did I say that!!!??? Too late!
Kizzi..sounds beautiful! Your son must be very creative! I don’t even let my sons mow the yard…they zigzag just to get it over with instead of nice straight or diagonal cuts! I’d rather do it myself!
This from FOD…
David & crew has safely landed in Qatar. flight to the Philippines is slightly delayed, new EAT is 9:24 which is 6:24PST/9:24EST
So apparently we will start getting crazy pictures and video from the Manila airport after 9:30 pm ET tonight!
We have all lost our minds.
desertrat..that concert appears to be a free pre-Demi/David concert promo. It’s free but you have to “win” a ticket. I imagine there will be many radio (ugh) promos for the summer tour since there’s five weeks between Mah-nee-lah & Del Mar.
I think David doesn’t really enjoy the radio promos, JMO. I may be wrong, I dunno?
I can see David being run ragged doing promos. Now I will worry about that
SF 132 said: “That concert appears to be a free pre-Demi/David concert promo.”
I feel like I’ve been hoodwinked.
I actually thought it was a performance in an exclusive theater in NYC w/the radio stations as sponsors. I sure hope David gets paid for this.
No, art isn’t just about breaking rules. Anyone can do that and call it art--like the expressionists of the seventies who carved out uniqueness by measuring the thickness of paint on the canvass. The greatest art is often not rule-breaking at all--Shakespeare, Michaelangelo, Mozart. The Godfather movies were pop culture at its finest--but broke no new ground in terms of movie-making techniques. David doesn’t have to break any rules--he just has to thrill us by being great at what he does.
Catching up on everyone’s posts, great discussion! (and SF, thanks for the news about the flight! phew)
Chenson, #117, “For some reason in this day and age, a strong personality is someone of a rebellious type or someone who does or says outrageous things or dresses in an outrageous way. It separates you from the crowd. That is how David is different.”
Wonderful point. David is completely his own person and yet absolutely one of us, wants to connect with us, not to be separate or, heaven forbid, above the crowd. I’m amazed at how he can be one in a million and yet seem like an old friend, all at the same time.
(No wonder so many people have to resort to boring old “nice” to describe Mr. Indescribable.)
(ojs #4, are you the poster formerly known as ojs759? *waves*)
desertrat..well it could very well be an actual concert as advertised, but it IS “free”. I too, hope David gets paid. I think at this point in his career, David should NOT have to do FREE concerts at all and should NOT be asked to sing during any radio promos, unless it’s for charity, JMO. I guess I’m selfish, but his voice is golden and his source of income. He should not have to give his services for free.
I’m really anxious to see the reception awaiting David at the Mah-nee-lah airport!!
See ya later!
SF, ha ha! Mah-nee-lah.
Praepos, I agree that art isn’t necessarily about breaking the rules. But I do think it’s about thinking out the box.
I believe David is capable of doing just that.
Re the NYC event: http://www.pcrichardtheater.com/pages/main/
“The venue will also be the home base for Clear Channel to capture content, like the highly-acclaimed Stripped series, for national distribution.”
If David’s performances are picked up for the Stripped series, this is a terrific opportunity for him to be heard by older listeners --i.e., those fans older than the tweens. I’ve heard Natasha Bedingfield, Taylor Swift, John Legend, etc. via Stripped’s acoustic sets and these are played nationally. I have my fingers crossed.
I agree with you TOfan, that David can finish first. He has the talent and ability to wow hundreds of new fans every single day and there will be a time when people realize just how amazing he is and put whatever differences they have aside, whether it’s his super nice personality or his Mormon religion, even his ethnicity.
One other point: David’s nature transcends his religion. The woods are full of Mormons, Catholics, Evangelicals, etc.--who lack kindness and charm and innocence. David has all this in spades--and it is spell-binding because his “niceness” is real, not feigned. Let’s not suck him into the cultural warfare vortex.
Ooh Desertrat, I’m keeping my fingers crossed too!
The thing about David is I do believe he’s his own person and one of a kind. I’m sure his parents, family, and religion have shaped who he is, but the essence of him is what we’re going after.
If the adjectives used to describe David were also the same used to describe his four siblings, then maybe we can look at his upbringing or his religion. But, we are definitely talking about David’s nature, as Praepos said, and that’s what draws us all in. It’s this part of him that makes me excited about what he’ll do next artistically.
Ha ha… yes Tofan I am ojs759. So happy you remembered. Long time no post. But I am always reading….. I love the great discussions here.
Hope you are well, my fellow Canadian. Wonderful article!
HG, good points. I have heard that all of his siblings are different from one another in their interests, but David is markedly different from the ones closest in age to him.
HG..I just got back from visiting Soul David. I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying it! It is soooo cooool as David would say! You are soooo cooool too!! As I’m sure David will think when you meet him some day soon! Good things come to those who wait!
David will be arriving in Mah-nee-lah in less than two hours. It will be 9:30 on Tuesday May 11 when he arrives, but still Monday nite here. I hope he gets a rousing welcome! I know JR and the Filipino Archies have been planning to greet David at the airport for a while. Hope it all goes well and that David slept all the way so he can be well rested. I also hope the promoters have arranged for lots of security like Sony did in Asia. Did I say I try not to worry anymore?
Here is JesseQ’s latest video..a karaoke instrumental
to David’s You Can. It’s really good! Take a look…
Thanks, SF. You’re sooooo coool too!
One day David and I shall meet -- maybe sooner than later. Right, Happy?
HG146- in 7-10 years my dear, ….. timing is everything………well maybe a momentary encounter in this decade wouldn’t ruin things….
I’m still pondering the equally sooooo coool comment from McFly about David being as calming as yoga. (You gotta love the Brits for coming up with the best metaphors -- I mean, they could have simply said David is “soooo nice.”)
So here’s the thing. When it’s so clear from those who’ve met David that he’s the loveliest, kindest, sweetest, most amazing person they ever met, how is it possible for there to even be David haters?
And why wasn’t it obvious that he’s the sweetest person when he was on AI (I know it was to his fans)?
I remember last year’s finale, when Simon interjected at the oddest moment, that David Cook is “a really nice guy.” I mean, Simon really wanted to emphasize this point to the TV viewership. It threw me off at the time that he would make such a point when this wasn’t a quality that was unique to Cook (certainly not when his opponent that night was equally nice, if not more so).
I guess I’m just wondering: why do we even have to ask about David’s goodness being some kind of handicap for his music career. Is it because shows like AI made his goodness seem like some kind of pathology?
Happy, keep reminding me!
TOfan- love, love your post. Wish I had the proper time to comment…my favorite topics… art, religion and authenticity/integrity in a person…. the triple play of posts, thanks.
Loving all the comments too, a thread that is a pleasure to read. I especially enjoy reading the comments that don’t resonate with me….when I want to be validated and agreed with I don’t necessarily read this blog… it’s easier to talk to my mirror….
I Meant David is arriving on Tuesday May 12, not 11!!
HG, #148, “why do we even have to ask about David’s goodness being some kind of handicap for his music career. Is it because shows like AI made his goodness seem like some kind of pathology?”
I think that’s part of it, HG. That show set him up in so many ways, as we all know, to suit their “story” and the ending they had planned, probably all along.
I think it’s also David’s youth and innocence combined with that niceness that make it easy for some not to take his talent seriously. When Bono leads a charge for charity, it’s the bad boy gone good, everyone loves that. But a good boy gone good? Tough to “spin” and tougher still for many to reconcile his adorkable ways off stage with the fierce performer he is on.
kizzi -- have to agree with you about SF, “Great Wise One.”
And if their is such a thing, I anoint you “Great Wise Two.”
SB -- Your desire for David to have some small degree of privacy and not have every segment of his life be sliced and diced like a Ron Popeil infomercial is something I too have struggled with at times, especially when I am posting my “very important” opinion. haha.
I don’t follow any other celebrities, so I don’t visit any other fansites, but I am guessing David’s fansites are probably some of the most respectful, and for the most part, are very mindful about protecting him and his private life. It is a wonderful and diverse group here, but we do have that one common denominator, our love and support for David James Archuleta. (I love his name.) It’s all good.
jackryan -- are you still with us or has the anticipation rendered you completely useless? I hope not because I can’t wait to hear all your news!
When was Bono a “bad guy”? heh.
Good points, TOfan. But it’s not even that David’s goodness is tough to spin. What I was getting at is how the show managed to turn David’s sweetness on its head by turning him into a “villain” (with some stage dad antics thrown in). I mean, it never ceased to amaze me the number of AI viewers who discovered David, post-show, and realized he was likable! That’s the part that is truly amazing to me. It so doesn’t compute, the image the show spun, to the stories just about everyone has told about meeting David and finding him so lovable and so sweet.
You would think a “reality show” would be able to capture that simple reality.
Well, I need to wake up early tomorrow morning, so I’ll call it a night.
Is David already in Manila? Safe travels and have fun, sweetie!
G’nite all!
Dawn#110 -- “Will he ever win OVER those folks..that have an aversion to his faith, his beliefs, his morals or his values?
No… because those things … create boundary lines… most of which will not be crossed…because society as a whole, will not “compromise” their individual beliefs to give him a chance.”
Your alter egos are so divergent -- one minute OTT fangirl & the next calm & collected ms dawn who sees the reality of the situation. I am so impressed. I tend to get stuck in the middle of the road, not knowing which way to go. I’ve been confronted with these issues from nonfan family members & all I can say is, “well I love his musical talent”. Of course, their reaction is “say what?”
“But don’t expect him to change the moral compass…because #1. He can’t, and #2. It’s unfair to set that expectation on him.”
This is so how I feel but don’t know how to express it. It’s like you just slapped me in the face (oh bad CB analogy, sorry) & I said, “oh yeah, exactly!”
“On an artisty level.. analyzing his stage presence, the growth of his performance skills, the leaps of faith he’ll soon undertake in song writing.. count me in. The REST.. I’m working VERY hard.. to remove myself from. Because I want to believe with every part of my being.. it’s none of my business…and should never matter.”
You are so right and comprise my beliefs about how to appropriately handle my ODD. Thanx for that.

Thank you!
On AI8 tomorrow night, Simon picked “One” by Bono for Adam to sing
David & co should already be in Mah-nee-lah! Or if not, they soon will be. Hoping he had a comfortable and restful trip. we should be getting an update soon or at least a tweet.
Funny, it’s 10:30 tomorrow morning there. Anyway, it’s bedtime for me, so good nite all, and for David..
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Make his time in the Philippines a safe & happy time and all he hopes for and deserves!
Just read on FOD that David arrived safely in Manila. I am dying to know what reception he got at the airport!
Is anyone out there an audio file editing guru. I just have a couple of simple questions and need someone who knows what they are talking about (since I don’t). If you are willing to help me, use the contact link at the top and send me a note. Thank you!
Hi guys. Just checking in to see if David arrived safely in Manila. Now I see that he has. Anxiously awaiting Davidmania videos from the airport.
JR -- He’s neeeaarrrby!!
Snarkie’s is saying that the flight from Qatar hasn’t arrived in Manila yet.
soundscene said: “Ok, looks like he’s not there after all. He’ll arrive 3:30pm Philippines time–that’s 3:30am EST, 12:30am PST.”
Good evening friends:
I am probably just naive, or stupid or both… And not as eloquent as the many posters here, however I enjoy what everyone shares immenmsely.
I don’t think the David’s religion will make one flipping difference on his path to fame and march to change the world. Yes, he did NOT sign up to change the world, but I believe he will change the face of music, and soften quite a few cynics along the way. He does not bring religion up, but others do. He responds but does not belabor. He wants to share his love of music. It is really that simple.
Silly me… thinks that religion, sexual orientation, and “yawn, yet again the ever present” girlfriend questions do not fit in the paramators of “share my love of music”. But what do I know- guess my head is in the clouds or where I wish things would be. I don’t see him changing his core identity
(what ever that may be) for anyone or any institution. As with any thinking, open minded human there will be a natural evolution of growth as he experiences more. That is as it should be for us all, I pray, under no particular religion, I may add.
did this work? Partial Crush from Cambridge…
happy#150 -- “Loving all the comments too, a thread that is a pleasure to read. I especially enjoy reading the comments that don’t resonate with me….when I want to be validated and agreed with I don’t necessarily read this blog… it’s easier to talk to my mirror….”
AAHA……. I guess not so easy for some of us -- looking in the mirror, thing (just kiddding)! Actually, I agree that the disparate comments get me thinking, just not always commenting. When I first found this site, there were times the discussions (some confrontational) made me uneasy, sometimes irritated. But I remained (lurking) and realized that everything isn’t always what it seemed on the surface. Yeah, good stuff.
HG -- “You would think a “reality show” would be able to capture that simple reality.”
An oxymoron, ya think?
JR…..He has arrived !!!How excited are you ??
TWEEETTS:
Arrived safely in the Philippines! Crazy at the airport! lots of cameras lol. I saw all the fans outside and banners! Thanks you guys!!
We had a layover in Doha, Qatar. Never thought I’d ever go there or in the Middle East. Would’ve liked to wander, but maybe another time
Is it just me or did David A. look pretty comfortable in all the crowds and answering questions, and David Cook the older of the two, looked pretty nervous and seemed to be avoiding the camera’s? Just saying—--
I have been mega busy and in a tough mindset lately… only made it to post #35
TOfan -- loved your post! David will prevail, I have no doubt.
You took the words right out of my mouth at #35 when you said
“When that happens, I sometimes catch myself trying to defend him. Then I stop and realize how ridiculous that is. David laughs all that off and goes right back to focusing on what matters — his music. He’s clearly much more mature than I am.”
Freofan #25
I seems to me that David is guided by his religion and not ruled by it. Being the smart guy he is, he will find a way to deflect any direct questions about his church’s stance on various issues. After all, he is not responsible for their doctrines, and thus, had no need to explain them.
tessielynn #31
Thanks for pointing out the destinction re the LDS stance on the gay “lifestyle” vs. being gay. It does make me think though and wonder that if the LDS can accept gay people, then how can they, in the next breath, deny their lifestyle? It furthers my thoughts to beg the question -- being the lapsed Catholic that I am and having my own issues with “my” religion -- Why should any religion take a stance on issuse such as these?
I would love to “say” more, but need to run back to bed for now and then back into my emotionally challenging real life in the morning. Take care all.
daverobsd #169 -- I wonder how much of David Cook’s “camera shyness” is due to the fact of the recent loss of his brother Adam?
This new tweet is so *pure, happy David* I love it. And hime.
“DavidArchie Wow, this mango I’m eating is really good. I don’t usually eat just a plain mango, but right now I’m really happy that I am.about 1 hour ago from web”
He looked so happy and relaxed in a crowd of people at the airport. Unbelievably poised.
awestruck #169 -- That’s true. Did not think about that. My bad!!!!
To finish off the UK tour feedback from some Mcfly fans, here are comments from their message board:
aww! lol. He never sang Angels in any of the Scotland shows
But he was amazing, so it’s okay! hah
p.s. Wow! U have lots of views already
Aww, didn’t he? When he sung it in Leicester I almost cried (which is why i had to stop filming) lol
Haha i know, before i could even finish tagging it had gone up 100 views. I think it got attached to some fan sites. It’s crazy.
no he didnt, he started singing it after them 2 shows!! lol. Kinda gutted cos i LOVE his version. Nd i dnt blame u for nearly crying. I woulda bawled my eyes out tbh.
lol, all of his vids get loads of views though, even the crappiest quality ones! I put like 4 vids up, nd i was the 74th most viewed channel on youtube :L:L
Oh that sucks
. Atleast it was a good show anyway, though.
lol, no way! That’s crazy! Archie fans are almost as bad as us haha
It was an amazin show! Nd Harry sooo fancies Archie :L:L
haha yeh i was :$ I already knew Archuleta from tv :L:L Saw him on the music channels
(L)
i just youtubed David Cook
i prefer Archie though! The other guy kinda sounds like all the better rock bands out there, so i’ll just stick with them
I so wish I’d gone to Ipswich now.
I don’t blame you tbh, I saw him twice on tour and enjoyed him soo much!
I’m kinda skint atm, but when I next can, I’ll definitely be buying his album
They GET him!
Abrra
Mangos ! David needs to eat a Whopper and fries….he is looking skinny….he looks healthy, but I can tell he has lost weight.
(UGG! Worry worry)
Hi everyone,
Just peeping in from work to say that -- David is doing it again. Charming the natives without really trying. Poor Media -- they don’t stand a chance.
In looking at the arrival footage of the two Davids -- DC seems to be saying in mannerisms and facial expressions -- please leave me alone -- I’ll probably get to you guys later but not right now.
DA’s is like -- Hi everyone, wow, sooo glad to be here. His facial expression is open and welcoming and of course the media just seem uber-excited to finally meet him.
I know that DC suffered a recent loss and probably were it not for the fact that this concert was pre-planned, might just not have preferred to be there at this moment. I read recently where he actually broke down a couple times in his last concert. My sympathies really go out to him.
P.S. Betsy -- I too enjoyed being tweeted bright and early this morning about enjoying a mango. You’ve just gotta love David -- it is lost cause -- lol!
TTYL,
Bye for now!
Why do I feel so happy David has finally arrived in Manilla?
It is not that he landed safely.
It is not that he had a HUGE reception at the airport ( they really show us up on this ).
It is not that above all the commotion, I can still hear his distinctive voice.
I am so happy that our own jackryan has him on her soil. That she will now feel the “force” in person. Hear the VOICE resonate in that huge venue like THUNDER!
This Friday the 15th we all need to look to the sky and concentrate on pushing any clouds away from Manila! Every time you look upward, think about jackryan having good weather for the concert!
Mass group conscience FTW!
I am most excited for you dear friend.
Abrra
That was a long flight!! Whoa, and our young man is as chipper as ever….jet lag doesn’t get the best of him!
I feel for Cook. What an emotionally draining time. I admire him for sticking to the game plan and going ahead with his International appearences. I know he feels blessed to have little David there with him now because it really helps to have someone close to you after experiencing such a loss.
Good morning everyone! Happy Happy Joy Joy! David TWEETS!
(I know, I know, says the Twitter Hater, but only David can turn me around on this technology!)
I loooove me some mangos, so it is with great giddiness to discover yet another thing that I share with David: Les Miz, Thai food, music, and mangos! Gah!
Not to worry, LuvieD, mangos are very filling.
I feel for Cook, I really do, and it was very obvious the difference in their temperaments when they arrived at the airport. Cook’s still in the grieving process, but I really hope he’s not in the Salieri v. Mozart competition mode and can really let himself open up to David’s yoga-like calming and healing influence.
Abbra, thanks for those McFly quotes! Loving this one in particular:
”
“i prefer Archie though! The other guy kinda sounds like all the better rock bands out there, so i’ll just stick with them
So true!
Oops! That should say “McFly fan quotes.”
hi
Abbra… I’m joining you in wishing for the best weather for the Manilla concert and am squeeing for jackryan!!!
I feel for Cook, this has got to be so hard for him. David’s calm will help, I hope.
Awestruck ((((((((((((((hug)))))))))))))))))))
a big one.
Off to work. Have a great day peeps.
Squeaaaaaaal , I am excited toooooo !!!!
OMG David on the same continent – BACK in Asia again !
The weather will be good for yyyouuu !

OK, since David tweeted that he just got Jordin’s new single and was jamming to it, I went on YouTube to check it out.
Apart from the annoying repetitive use of the word “Battlefield,” this will be the next summer hit, ladies and gentlemen.
Considering that it’s written by the same hit maker behind “Bleeding Love” and “Halo,” coupled with the simple fact that Jordin is performing this song Wednesday night during the Top 3 results show, when everyone’s going to be tuning in to see if Adam makes it to the finale or gets voted off in a shocking boot, “Battlefield” will skyrocket its way to the top of the charts.
Good for Jordin! Especially if this is the first single from her sophomore album. Here’s hoping for the same kind of success with Album #2 for David. You know the No. 2 is his lucky number.
On my way to work now. Until next time!
oh and the translation..to the video
Female host: … David Archuleta. They are excited about the guestings lined up for them but especially for their concert this Saturday. The news is brought to us by Nelson Canlas.
Male reporter: Earlier, at around 1:30 PM, American Idol champion David Cook arrived for his concert here together with AI first runner-up David Archuleta. Cook was economical with his words.
Cook: I’m excited to be here.
Reporter: After disembarking from the plane, Cook just waited for his luggage and then proceed to his car. However, concert producer Jomari Yllana had the chance to speak to Cook at the VIP area.
Jomari: Actually, he’s supposed to give a small statement here but [he was unable to] due to security reasons.
Reporter: After Cook left, fans rushed to the arrival area, all of them waiting for Archuleta. After nearly an hour, Archuleta arrived.
David: It’s really crazy here but I’m excited to be in Manila. Looking forward to the show too, on Saturday. It’ll be [I can't figure this out].
Reporter: Before Archuleta left, he mentioned that he wants to meet one his idols in Asia, Regine Velasquez. On Thursday, the Davids will be at two mall shows. They also have guestings on SIS and Eat Bulaga and on Friday they will be live on 24 Oras [24 Hours].
junnie4DJA, thanks for the translated video. Are you from Manila? If so, are you attending the show?
HG, I heard Ryan Tedder will be playing guitar for Jordin when she performs Battlefield on Idol. Someone(her management? Jive?) is positioning her well.
I am so excited for Rabid, too! I believe he was making a huge banner to show David. At least Jeff is familiar with Rabid’s work, so I really hope David and Rabid get a chance to meet.
For those of you that link directly to the comments page of the Feature, take a look at the newest Editorial by davidfanLiz. Especially if you have a little trouble finding your way around “the mansion”.
So happy David arrived safe & sound!
David..Good night & sweet dreams.
This is gonna be very strange…David will be, or should be sleeping while we are anxiously awaiting for his next move, word, look, etc.
Can’t wait to hear a first hand report from jackryan. Hope she’s still alive. So excited for her!
Although I have no love for Cook, I do feel for him. He is fortunate he will have David near by. If anyone can make things easier for Cook, David can.
Later!
desertrat . May 12, 2009 at 9:28 am .
lol no I could not do the translation it, this was posted from snarky. I am from Singapore actually.
Sigh…no I am going for the show. By the time I decided to go, some of my SG friends mentioned that the good seats are all taken up. Also, with family obligations and what nots,I just could not make it. But I was so tempted to go and up till yesterday, I was still checking the ticktetworld and the best seat available is on 10th row. Afterall, Manila is just 3 hours away..but no, I have decided not to. There will be other opportunities.
I have already seen him performed once when he was in Singapore last month which I thought would never had happen. Who would have thought a year ago that David would come out to to Asia for a promo. We were indeed very very fortunate that it happened. With the success of the promo gig in Singapore and Malaysia, I am quite sure he will come back again soon…
refnaf DITTO
OT …
I wonder what Cook will think of our boy’s Zero Gravity.
Exciting stuff.
He’ll get a chance to see first hand David’s growth over the last year.
check this out, inspiration from David.
this is way coool….
junnie #193 Almost looks like Alex’s footwork while he’s playing guitar!
rambling today..
I have Barriers on repeat.. it seems to be my favorite song this morning. (that changes.. alot.. but right now.. it’s on repeat) <--background vocals.. amazing.
It made me think of some bars that were supposed to have been added for the live version. I don’t think I hear it. Am I deaf? It sounds the same.
The bass beat on the recorded version is awesome .. Eli should work something into this that would fill the depth of the song.
This video is insane, being mobbed by media upon arrival !!
I believe David will have a blast in Manila..the media just love him, look at how all the press fangirlying him, shrieking his name.
praepos #134 — I offer the following not so much for your own edification (because I fear, given the absurdity of your remarks, that you may be beyond reach) but for those others here who may be inadvertently inclined to consider your commentary as somehow rational.
Mozart was an inveterate rule breaker. No one before him had successfully taken virtually any combination of instruments and created music that was so sublime and pleasing to the ear. Among Mozart’s many innovations in orchestration, his ability to blend woodwinds and horn with a cantabile, liquid piano line were considered revolutionary. His innovations in the opera domain were many, but the one most evident in Cosi fan tutte was the elevation of the writing for ensembles to ethereal heights not previously imagined.
The Godfather broke one of the biggest and long-standing cinematic rules of all time: that you couldn’t create a family drama out of the gangster genre, and even give rise to sympathy for murderers. As for technical innovations, the audio and sound work on the films introduced breakthroughs that are still referenced to this day.
And as for Shakespeare… Saying Shakespeare didn’t break existing conventions of dramaturgy and storytelling and language and poetry is like the fool who reviews a Shakespeare play by remarking that it has “too many clichés.”
Dear Rascal,
Without fail, you leave me at the edge of my seat.
You are, to this blog as David is to music.
Genuine and passionate.
okay.. I’ll stop fangirling you now

I have a theory that if we spin in a circle very fast, we may eventually catch up to David-time. ( Look’s up for a house to drop on me here in OZ)

Rascal #197,
For whatever reason, I just sat-up straighter reading your words!
Junnie, Thanks for the videos. They seem to suggest a nice guy can finish first. In Asia. Nice conjugates in English as bland, dull, unexciting, etc, but apparently not in the Asian culture. There, he is nicknamed, quite aptly, as “Mr. Sunshine.” They see only something positive and nothing negative in his niceness. I guess somebody can write a thesis on how the contrast reflects the ailment of our culture.

“This video is insane”
Oh the HUMANITY!
Rascal . May 12, 2009 at 11:13 am .
What we have here(post 134 ) is a pigs and pearls thing. I read post 134 3x . It made nonsense. Kudo’s to you for attempting to clarify the obvious.

We need to make hotel reservations “yesterday”. NH is a tourist state in the summer. We want rooms near the venue yes?
Get back to work!!!!

Abrra the spammer who thinks she may be done now
This!
I’ll book reservations Friday.. I am pretty sure the place I’m looking at is right by the venue.
Relax…
I procrastinate.. it’s a coping tool I developed many years ago.. to temper my anxiety when I get excited about something.
This of course… causes me to be late alot.
It’s a work in progress.
As May winds down..I’ll be more and more evasive.. trying to hold back the anxiety of meeting the golden child.
Whew! Rascal, you’re sure in ripping form today. Thanks for the clarity.
*Heads back to work. Until next time!*
This is just not fair..but who ever said life when David is on the other side of the globe, is fair?? He’s sleeping as he should be and we’re…uh, what are we doing? I can’t even view any vids here at work since our corp office has decided it’s in their emp’s best interests to block YouTube!
Anyway, I was looking around the Mansion as Liz suggested. Ohmyheck! The furnishings are beautiful and the artwork is fabulous! The state of the art Entertainment Center where videos of David are shown at a touch of your fingertips..just marvelous! You can literally get lost in any of the Great Rooms of the Mansion because there’s so much to enjoy in each room! Then there’s always the sitting room, where we have all these great conversations about our favorite subject, David Archuleta. What’s great about the Mansion is that we can visit for a minute or an hour or all day. We can feel free to stay as long as we wish and just sit back, relax & enjoy everyone’s banter back & forth or feel comfortable enough to say what’s on our mind..how great is that?
And speaking of what’s on my mind…there are no updates to the US Summer Tour since my last comment there. Who all have made more plans to attend the summer tour? Looks to me that after seeing David knock ‘em dead in the UK, that surely there’s more TDC’ers going to more concerts, right? Yeah, I know…Dawn is going to all of the concerts east of the Mississippi, but besides DAWN, who else is planning to go & which ones? I’m nosey

TOfan -- Very thought provoking post. Has brought out a plethora of opinions and has caused many lurkers to delurk. An article that causes so many thoughts is always a good thing in my opinion, to start the conversation.
I’m so excited for David and JR! JR hope to hear from you soon.
Here is 9 minutes of David after his set at Leicester.
“are” not “is”
Talking to fans in Leicester. Don’t know who is more charming, David or the fans…
#210 — British fanboys, I love it. “I cahn’t believe this!”
Nice close up of David at airport.
WFY and Altnoy from Leicester, shaky but the closest I’ve seen.
I’m all choked-up! The David love is spreading…
admin -- #210 — British fanboys, I love it. “I cahn’t believe this!”
Did you hear the one fanboy who’s followed him since star search days?
Little did David know how many existing fans he had in the UK and now all the converts!
So is ZG the next release instead of TMH?….confusalated here…..He did say they are working on getting it released soon, right? or did I dream it…..
I loved watching that 9-minute video of David! I have a question: Was the blonde woman at 3:00 giving him directions to a church to attend?
Loved the fanboys!
I noticed his comment about ZG, too. He definitely said that it will hopefully be released soon, that they are pushing the label.
Oh, I just love hearing the fan comments on that video. “He’s more than just a pop star. He’s got depth.” Awww, the GET him!
LuvieD -- I heard what you heard! No dream!
Here is what David said about ZG per FOD..
David reveals that they tried to get Zero Gravity onto the UK album, to no avail, but it should be released soon as a single! “I think we might be releasing it soon, actually,” says David. “Push the label.”
So, David is asking his fans to push the label for ZG to be released as a single.
I do have one concern..the studio version of ZG does not have that excitement, getupandjumpcuzyoujustcannnothelpit explosive edge to it that David gave to his live versions. He will, NO, he MUST re-record it the with the same intensity, otherwise it may be another ALTNOY. We pushed for it to be the second single and it has done well, but was not another “CRUSHing” success. JMHO here.
ZG.. releasing? Oh my.. I hope they rerecorded it whilest in the UK.
SF .. I tried to update the thread ..but the comments appeared locked.
I am not going to ALL the concerts east of the mississippi.. LOL. You silly woman… thanks for the smile
But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t trying to win tickets to the NY gig.
Abrra.. I promise.. we’ll be okay.. I booking ressies this week.. and it’s still 3 months away.
Are we getting a blog today? or will he bypass it since he technically lost a day.. and it’ now Wednesday there.
Marlie.. what is this.. I hear you’re attending AC?? Are you VIPing? You must VIP.
djafan #210 and knotliser #212
Thanks for the 9 minutes with David video! Did you hear David’s reply when asked about “Zero Gravity”??
At 00:28, he said “I think we might be releasing it soon, actually! We’ve been talking about it. We’ve been pushing the label.”
That sounds encouraging, folks!!!
I enjoyed the video, even tho it was only some fans hanging out with David after his set. I love that he waits outside to say hi to people, like a casual M&G. No matter where David may roam, people have the same reaction to him when they meet him. Total joy!
I really hope David Cook watches some UK footage of David singing “Angels”. It would do him good. I’m sure it would jumpstart Cook’s healing process. If not, then he will benefit just by being around David’s aura.
Bebereader . May 12, 2009 at 3:39 pm .
This is a perfect vid for ‘no sound’ watching. He is so expressive when any human comes in his orbit. That face! They thought his make up was gone from sweating ( !!!!!! ) but that’s just his glow.
Keep them coming, I am grabbing every vid
Abrra
dawn65: No, I decided not to VIP. I just want to hear him sing and watch him jump around on stage. Sometimes the mystique is part of the attraction
So am I wrong about the studio version of ZG? It should NOT be released as is..David should re-record it with the same intensity, along with all the runs and especially the ending he did live? The studio version just isn’t the same. No way, no how!
As for the informal M&G’s by David here in the good ole USA. we can fagettabout it! It ain’t happening. Otherwise why offer VIP tickets?? If anyone is lucky enough to “run into him accidentally” during the summer tour, they can count themselves extremely lucky!
I hope Cook comes away from this appearance with a lighter heart just from being around David and his aura. I recall David had a way of making Cook laugh with his “dry wit”. I hope Cook lets himself enjoy this time with David. I’m sure his brother would be the first to tell him the same thing.
Here’s hoping this concert lives up to all the hype..I know David will do his part to make it a memorable experience. I am really looking forward to hear what Cook’s Philipino fans will say about David’s performace. I have a feeling David will deliver another “knock out” performance on the 16th!
rascal #197
Interesting points you make but Id like to add something.
I personally art, great art, can be either groundbreaking or innovative but also regular and a follower of the rules and sometimes even both!
Leading on from what you say about Mozart, what you said is indeed true but also Mozart is regarded by many to be a systematic writer, formulaic. It wasnt until the 19th century that rules really got broken by anyone. I would probably say Beethoven was more of a rule breaker than Mozart. But then again, as you say, had music ever sounded so good and beautiful before Mozart, even within the rules of functional harmony? Mozarts creations, no matter how functional or systematic they appear, are incredible. See, this is my point. Great artists can either be people who discover new things by breaking rules, or manage to get something remarkable within the given rules themselves, or both!
I know its not really relevant to David but I thought Id throw that in the discussion haha.
I personally think*
WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is an old vid of Archu-gaze :09 of heaven. I wanted to bring back some memories because we miss him so much. I was there that day!
Abrra who is youtubing to pass the time
haha Abrra #230 I thoroughly enjoyed those 9 seconds. Was wondering where that video was; thought it got losted. Hope you saved it for the archives!
A second ago, on a whim, I asked my husband, who has been teaching music for a long time, “Honey, was Mozart a rule-breaker?” His reply was “You bet he was! Why?” I said “Oh, nothing….” LOL
Leaving now with him, to do a few errands. I can just imagine the discussion in the car!
SB: Thank you for the pre-birthday wishes! xoxo

I was looking for the merry go round one /hint /hint of that archugaze. Yes I saved the :09 sec for my files.

Rule breaking .. sounds.. devious.
Consider rule breaking .. somethin fluid.
“Rules” .. in and of themselves.. are defined by the individual.
I may find chewing gum… Rule breaking.. something totally groundbreaking.. if I was raised and lived by a creed that gum chewing was a gigantic no-no… for whatever reason.
Don’t perceive “rule breaking” .. as something HUGE and redefining.
Because.. sometimes.. it’s subtle.. but none the less.. innovative.
omg the ultimate typo!! above
Abrra
That fan video is too much. I may need to watch it several times.
“Can I have a cuddle?”
And the scream at the end “Oh my God!”
Everything in between.
LOVE the fanboying. We don’t see enough of it.
He didn’t have a place to stay the night and didn’t care!
Nine minutes of David hanging out in a parking lot with a few fans.
Love it.
Hmmmm..it’s 5:30am Wed 5/13 where David is. He’s probably getting ready to wake up & get ready for a busy day. Or he may already be up & about! Maybe even out RUNNING!!
Hope he has a great day!
See you all later!
One other thing that I’ve noticed about UK fans. They like to say “I was was gutted hearing Angels” Or “His performance gutted me”. The word gutted comes up often and describes the feeling perfectly.
Hi Everyone,
Great fan vid! Good Point Betsy about use of the word -- gutted. I also like gobsmacked -- their version of thud.
This vid almost wants to make a person book airfare anywhere out of the US to see David live and perhaps get the chance to talk to him anywhere from 5-20 minutes, than to pay VIP and get 30 seconds IF you’re lucky. *Shakes head in amazement*

Thank you for that clip!
It’s one of my all time favorites… love that archugaze.
Bebe-
If not, then he will benefit just by being around David’s aura.
This for sure will happen for Cook… I think there will be evidence of that in the coming days.

Hope you continue posting here.
The original longer version of “The Archugaze girl” has been deleted from youtube. Sony complained. Anyone have a copy?

It’s 7:30AM tomorrow where David is (whaaaaa????) Anyway, Since my head is messed up cuz of this huge time difference
(or could it be cuz he makes me feel like it’s Zero Gravity??)
Anyway..I’ll be posting the prayer for David at this time each nite while he’s in Mah-NEE-lah…
Dear Lord,
Please take care of David. Make his time in the Philippines a safe & happy time and all he hopes for and deserves!
Take care and keep your cell phone with you at all times! We miss you badly, and will always love you madly!
Speaking of the term “gobsmacked”, while at my dentist office this morning I read a TV Guide that had an interview with Simon Cowell.
He said that last year David Archuleta “walked” through the finale and that after hearing him sing that night, in that theatre, with the audience’s response, if he’d had a million dollars he would have bet it all on David Archuleta to win.
He said he was absolutely “gobsmacked” that Cook won.
Hi -- Is anyone watching AI?
Adam started great until he started screaming at the top of the song -- we NEED David’s version pronto. We also need his version of Apologize. Poor Kris -- was sacrificed by a bad song choice. He was straining to reach those high notes in the song.
Thank You Randy for the great comment -- nice but too much off the melody.
Chenson #229 – good points about breaking rules and working within given rules. I agree that great artists can exist in either realm. You mention Mozart as one who followed the rules of functional harmony. Bach is another example of a rule-following composer. Think about a Bach fugue – there are precise rules about when each voice enters and at what interval each fugue subject must begin. Strict rules, but in Bach’s hands, it becomes pure poetry. Another of my favorite composers is John Cage. He started out trying to compose in 12-tone, a strictly rule-bound technique. He quickly gave that up for a professional life of rule-breaking, including his most famous piece, 4′ 33″ that consists of 3 movements of silence. Both great composers in my book, but one worked within the prevailing system, the other blew the system to smithereens.
As you said Chenson, not relevant to David, but I couldn’t resist.
JR posted a recap on the next thread!! GO SEE!!
This discussion on artistry, conformity and rule-breaking makes me feel sooooo ignorant! And I loooove it! Ha ha
I remember falling in love with Mozart because of ‘Amadeus’, the Oscar-winning production and going back to watch it again in the same week simply because I craved that beauty. Later I’d be schooled by a colleague on how the film had got it all wrong. I was like, ‘What the heck?!
I don’t know whether Mozart broke rules or not. I believe he did- isn’t he considered the precursor of romanticism in music? You can’t begin something new without breaking a couple of rules -- all I know is that his music is intense.
As for David, he can imbue even the cheesiest song with passion, and that will buy him some time until he starts churning out the really good stuff.
Posted this at the next thread but reposting it here (with some changes), so nobody misses it.
Am here! Am alive! Still cool LOL (ok I lost my cool totally for some moments at the airport — will show you in the vid to see what I mean LOL!

I got the impression that the TriBeCa event will be a performance. And it looks like a very intimate venue! Now there’s just the small matter of winning tickets!
I was fishing around and found this:
“The P.C. Richard & Son Theater – located inside Clear Channel Radio’s New York headquarters in the city’s fashionable TriBeCa district – accommodates up to 220 people and is available for private events…”
here:

Some interesting stuff there. Worth a quick look!
jackryan -- Boy you have me hyperventilating! I can feel your excitement. So happy for you…. please keep posting your updates.
The band and David…
